OUR MEMORIAL FRIEZE Our memorial trieze is painted in beautiful, natural colors by Lincoln Stoddard. The frieze shows President McKinley at a critical moment of his administration. The problem ot Cuba was before him, and he had to act quickly without arousing the Old War powers. We are proud to have our school named after such a great statesman, who listened to reason rather than to threats and clamor. NORMAN BLISS DEE Principal, McKinley High School RIENDS of the Classes of Ianuary and Iune, 1949: RADUATION from McKinley High School should bring with it a great deal of satisfaction to you and your parents and friends. It indicates that you have had enough determination to stick to a job until it is finished, enough intelligence to be able to carry out directions reasonably well, and enough common sense to get along with many different persons satisfactorily. All of these things should be of immense value to you in Whatever activity you engage after leaving school. Therefore, it is my sincere wish for all of you that you may continue to grow in determination, in Wisdom, and in favor with God and man. -N. B. DEE. Miss Connor's aim is to help all pu- pils who enter McKinley to adjust themselves happily and successfully to their school environment and oppor- tunities. SARAH A. To leave McKinley will be like leaving the best friend I have ever had. In my own four years at McKinley, I have made many never-to-be-forgotten acquaintances. The athletic teams, my classmates, and above all, my teachers have made my school days happy days. The privilege of calling myself a IvIcKinleyite and the right to a share in the School Spirit, both have been quite an honor to me. It will be for you, the Iuniors, the Sophomores, and the Fresh- men, to take up Where We, the Seniors, leave off. lt will be for you to get as much out of school as you can, contribute to the little things that have made our school outstanding: and above all, uphold the high McKinley standards that those before you have set. Good-by, my friends, and may your days at McKinley be as happy as mine have been. -Ray Hodge enior .7Le .Simior Cfau Sponsor, Marion Iudge Clarkson FREIDA I. LEIGH PEGGY KOLEEN SHRIDE SUMMER SCHOOL GRADUATES BARBARA BANTA IANE LUBAS Page Thirty-seven .fdcluidor CHAIN is no stronger than its Weakest link, but here at McKinley none of the links in the chain that binds us everlast- inqly and willingly to Alma Mater is Weak. And of all the ties that bind, which is more pleasant than the ties of homeroom and advisory? The spirit oi McKinley, so Wonderfully manifest in our recent alumni reunion, has its beginning right in the advisory. Who is not proud to say, The President of the Senior Class is in my room -or, The Goldbug Queen is in mine, or, The All-District Quarterback is in mine, or, They're all swell people in mine ? With the advisory as a nucleus, the spirit of McKinley reaches out over school and community. lt is marked by good will, co-operation, courtesy, helpfulness, willingness to carry re- sponsibility, respect for law, good sportsmanship, and high spirit. Wherever We look for this spirit we find it: in the classroom or the shop: in the library or the auditorium, in music or dra- matics: in the clubs or in athletics: at the stadium or in the streets: in school or in life. We rejoice and take great pride in our boys and girls. To you we sing, McKinley . . I'- gaigy 3 l 0u,9 ra. It's the love you have for your school, the school that stands for good clean sports, for loyalty, for school spirit. At games one can see Goldlougs all over the place cheering classmates along. When We have our dances, to the music of the McKinley Band, the place is lively with Goldbugs. At G. A. A. programs do the girls have the support and applause of their classmates? By all means! Hearty support is given to all school activities. Like a loyal family, we may have feuds among ourselves, but just let any outsider try any funny tricks with the Goldbugs! Ronald Reiss, Co-Managing Editor ot the GOLDBUG, started the Coronation off by introducing the first lady, Miss Pearl Katich, last year's queen, and her escort, Edgar Sparks, editor-in-chief of the GOLDBUG. After taking their places on the stage, they were followed by the ten candidates and their escorts, the McKinley football team, as they, too, were introduced by the Master of Ceremonies. Edgar Sparks placed the crown on her head and she took her seat on the throne as Pearl retired from her reign as Queen of McKinley High. Page Eighty-seven WCJGHL ERE at McKinley we have a strong emotional feeling which We call School Spirit. We bring out this spirit at sports events and school activities, where there is a need for encour- agement, loyalty, and stamina. The football player will play harder it he knows that there is someone backing him up. The speaker on the stage will speak with determination it he knows that someone is pulling for him. These are but a few ways in which school spirit cheers us on. The graduates of McKinley have in their hearts this spirit that they can never forget, and now it is up to you, the present- day students of McKinley High to keep this spirit ringing through the halls of Alma Mater. -Charles Stimac we llfarrtifg joofgaff .lam Coach, Mr. Blanke Hold that line! Hold that line! There goes Slazinik for a touchdown! Although the McKinley Goldbugs did not rank in the upper brackets at the end of the football season, they put up a game defense and gave the other teams in the High School League a fight worth-While. The Goldbugs had eleven lettermen returning from last season to carry on for their old Alma Mater. The Bugs started the season oft with a bang when they won over C. B. C., l3-O. This game brought to the front Don Doots Slazinik, who proved to be a valuable defense man for McKinley. Slazinik, along with Chuck Stimac, crossed the goal line to bring the opening victory to our school. Slazinik starred again in the Alton game with the help of Ted Demos, making the score 14-6. Although the Bugs had a great defense in the Cleveland game, they were walloped, 7-O. Over in Evansville the team never got into the game. The lndiana team, using the modified T formation, trampled McKinley, 50-0, the worst loss of the season. In the Roosevelt game we again were defeated, 24-0, and to end the sea- son the Bugs fell under Southwest, 27-6. Although the season was not one of the best, we were fortunate to have such players as Don Slazinik, who was chosen Prep Player of the Week in the GLOBE-DEMOCRAT.
