Cut s School at SWar ' These are, the times that try men's souls, was said of another war period. But the war of today challenges our intelligence and strength as well as our spirit. The participation of lVlcKin-leystudents and faculty in the war effort has many phases. Pupils,.under the guidance of teachers, have knitted, sewed garments, decorated menu- covers, made canes and game boards for disabled soldiers, col- lettfted readirigmatter, and at Christmas each advisory 'group filled several stockings with giftsA'for.hospital+zed soldiers. S Hundreds of ourpupils-have taken the Red Cross First Aid Course. Many girls are engaged in 'making surgical dressings and serving as nurses' aides after school hours. Groups of'lvlcKinley entertainers visit the USO, and 'we have contributed generouslyi-1to,the USO cookie jars. McKinley boys and girls have assisted in 'all scrapslaftd paper drives, and their efficient help during the rationing program has b?n tgfe'aitly appreciated. 7 S' J, J - ' ,. f,,,,tThelf-purchase' bf war bonds and stamps is constantly being stressed. Pupils who have studied physiography are finding employment in gqverpment plants doing map interpretation, The study of meteorology provides trafningffor -iab jobs in the weather bureau and the Army Air Corps. Mechanical drawing lalsojaids in map- making and drafting work in war plants. . ' .'t I , A. - ' The man-power shortage has produced unusual demands upon our high schools for part-t.ime',l1vorkers. During the Christmas season pupils were excused from school to-work in department stores and post offices. Many students who work after? school and at night are successfully carrying the heavy burden of school and a jobatl the same time, Another type of cooperation with industry and business is the Qhalf-day attendance by some pupils at Hadley Technical School to prepare themselves for industrial and commercial jobs. The fine partigipation of our student body and faculty in an all out effort to win the war has again demonstrated the spirit of our McKinley motto: l-lead, heart, and hand!! g A Page Twenty i at
