IULIUS STEGER IN MEMORY OF MARGARET A. HEREEN Deceased May 9, 1936 The St. Louis Public Schools suffered an irreparable loss in the death of Margaret A. Hereen. During a life devoted to teaching in our schools, Miss Hereen not only established an admirable professional record, but Won the respect and love of the teachers with whom she associated and of the students whose Work she directed. Her life and work constitute her epitaph: An excellent teacher, a Wise counselor, and a loyal friend. Miss Hereen received her entire education in St. Louis schools. After completing her elementary education in Charless and Peabody schools, she entered Central High School. Upon graduation from high school, she enrolled at the St. Louis Normal School to prepare herself for the teaching profession. She later received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Harris Teachers College. Subsequently, she did graduate Work at the St. Louis University. Her thirty-five years of teaching were spent at the Garfield Elementary School and at the McKinley High School. In addition to her versatility in art, music, and academic Work, Miss Hereen was a genuine educator. Not only did she present her subject matter effectively, interestingly, and intelligently, but she kept the human aspect of teaching ever in sight. She taught by precept and by example, inspiring her students with the Christian ideals of industry, sincerity, honesty, charity, cheerfulness, sacrifice, and virtuous living. As a skillful teacher and as an exemplary character, Miss Hereen will ever live in the minds and hearts of the McKinley High School faculty and student body. So often wrong, so seldom right, Yet always seeking for the light. We knew that we must sink or swim, And with this view we started in. When first, as Freshman lad or lass, We, trembling, feared to enter class, As Soph'mores we obeyed each rule, And brought much honor to our school. And then, as luniors, 'twas our aim To gain all glory, rank, and fame. But now, as Seniors, hand in hand, We take our last and final stand. Oh, if you others only knew How Senior classes envy youl For we must bid our school adieu, And now must start our life anew. In many walks our paths we'll take, And each a mark for his class will make. Let's give a toast as we leave today, Our debt of thanks to her to pay, ' Let's shout unto the very sky: Our dear old school, MCKINLEY HIGHV' -MARY IANE LONGENECKER 1 MK! ei - Q -1 f y n nn, L i I , i 1 2556981 'Qjf - . This class enjoys the distinction of being perfectly balanced: there are 101 boys and 101 girls in the class. Another unique feature is the fact that the class has had two sponsors. Upon the transfer of Miss Weiss, sponsor during the seventh term, to Soldan High School, Miss Lynch became sponsor and has continued with the sarne excellent guidance through the eighth terrn. Although no one knows just where masks originated, singers and dancers were the first to use them. From the drama and religious ceremonies their use has been extended to other fields, includ- ing architecture, portraiture Clife masks and death masksl, and plastic surgery, as well as various festivities, such as Mardi Gras celebrations. Masks have been made of every material known to man: wood, clay, plaster, Chamois, skins, fabrics, straw, paper, rush fibers, metals, beads, and feathers. A modern revival of interest in masks is being led by W. Benda and H. R. Kniffin. The latter has recently published a book on masks. The masks pictured here were designed and made by McKinley art students. The faces were modeled of clay, over which was put a film of grease. Then cloth was placed over the greased clay and modeled into the features with paste. Next, strips of paper were carefully modeled over the cloth. After this, the model and coverings were allowed to dry. When the clay dried, it cast off the cloth and paper, which made an excellent mask. Both the mask and the clay model were painted, shellacked and decorated. Playing a ten-game schedule, McKinley won eight games, tied one, and lost one, scoring 178 points to the opponents' 26 points. Scores ran--as follows: U. Hatch and Marciak-the only lettermen re- turning from last year's championship team-were made co-captains of the promising 1936 squad. The first practice game of the season, lost to the alumni by an 8 to 6 score, was with a powerful nine which boasted two or three professionals. The close score was creditable, being the highest score ever run up against a veteran McKinley alumnine. Although the Nugget went to press too early to give definite first, second, and third string teams, the rnost likely candidates for those positions were as follows: Pitchers-Lyman Abernathy, Paul Housman, Dick Kukuljan, Mathew Mugavero, and Eugene Snyder. McKinley placed fourth in the 1935 annual field day contests, Point-getters were john Burge and Walter Miller, who tried for first place in the senior pole-vault, Vincent Crocker and Ray Carr, first and second in the mile run, Eugene Novell, a close second in the senior 880, Paul Wittenberg, second in the junior 440, and Michael Schuller, second in the junior hurdles. Veterans back for the l938 season were Novell, Gerescher, Gubany, Schuller, Kennedy, Layne, Schleifstein, Rouse, and Schubert. The club meets every Monday. The programs at the regular meetings consist of contests, stories about stamps, and occasionally an auction. There have been several guest speakers during the year, among whom are Mr. I. Edw. Vining, Mr. Carl T. Wessbecher, and Mr. A. H. Foote. These men are all stamp collectors and Mr. Wessbecher was at one time president of the McKinley High School Stamp Club. When the national convention of the Society of Philatelic Americans was , held at the Melbourne Hotel last August, the club exhibited two frames of stamps and was awarded first place in the junior division. fift Page Seventy-nine ttf? These qualities are being developed by students who offer their services as monitors, ottice assistants, or library staff members. Such service is also a scholastic stimulant tor by maintaining a good record the student must prove himself capable of holding his position as student helper. Reward for this service to the school does not come in a material form, such as a pin or an emblem, but in the ad ditional experience which this organization affords. Meetings are held each Wednesday in room 305. The main object of the club is to discuss articles pertaining to contemporary occurrences at home and abroad. In order to vary the program, anecdotes and jokes are read, and puzzles are solved. A miniature newspaper is received each week. After the meetings, members carry away with them some added bits of knowledge of current happenings. The Debating Club Robert Horak Iohn Wilkins George Perko Bernard Wolken The aims of a debating club are such as to place debating among the important scholarly activities of any high school. Primarily, these aims are to develop speaking ability and to stimulate intelligent discussion of the topics of the day, Winning a debate is merely incidental to the training in logical thinking and effective presentation, in wide read- ing and enrichment of vocabulary, which the members derive from participation in this activity. The history of the club is characterized by progress and increased activity, From an inexperienced group of boys, the club, under the sponsorship of Mr. Marchesseault, has advanced in four years to a rank high among the high school debating teams of the city. At first the number of debates a year was only two, but this number has increased to eight. Consequently, the debater has more opportunity for experience and thrills-yes, thrills. Activities included debates with the public high schools, with the Catholic high schools and with a girls' team of St. Elizabeth's Academy on such subjects as: Cancellation of War Debts, Free Public Medical Service, and Government Control of Armaments, all of which are current topics in which the public is interested, The membership oi the club has always been made up ot boys, although for the last two years girls have been eligible. If the girls lose their fear oi a so-called man's'1 game, McKinley may yet see girl debaters. Unfortunately, most of the torch bearers leave this year, f th 'll s rve the Debating but the members have the hope that those that come a ter em wi pre e Club's record of progress.
