THE CARNATION to baseball by men and clothes by women and how seldom current events of world Wlde lnterest lmportant publlc matters questlons of phllosophy and rellglon recent lnventlons and dlscoverles new books and plays are dlscussed one beglns to wonder whether the old fashloned conversatlon of cultured people I3 a lost art Good muslc also adds a great deal to the pleasure of soclal lntercourse 5 Then there ls the lntellectual llfe One should earlv acqulre the hablt of readlng good llterature ln a large clty wlth a splendld publlc llbrary no one need be wlthout the companlonshlp of Good books We cannot all aSSOCl3tC as much as we mlght wlsh wlth people of culture and reflnement and lt IS seldom we are prlvlleged to be ln contact Wlth persons who have such ablllty as to place them ln the same class Wlth those of all ages who have put thelr thoughts lntO books for us to read ln any good llbrary you wlll flnd the products of the master mlnds of the present and the past and when we read thelr thoughts we are truly maklng these ex ceptlonal lDdlVldUalS our companlons 6 It IS lmportant too that we have recreatlons of the proper sort All work and no play makes ack a dull boy Llterally recreatlons are aCtlVltlCS that re create us make us over Our nervous systems need a change from the monotony of everyday exlstence lt IS very lm portant that we have enough recreatlons to keep us cheerful and happy lt IS perfectly proper to have as one of our ambltlons ln llfe to get happl ness out of It There IS such a thlng as taklng ourselves so serlously that we forget to be happy lt IS true that happlness IS largely a matter of temperament but persons of the most cheerful dlsposltlon may become depressed lf they spend too much tlme at work Physlcal condltlon has qulte as much to do Wlth happlness as has temperament and we should alm to keep ourselves ln prlme physlcal condltlon always To accompllsh thls end the best recreatlons are those that take us out of doors and glve us CXCYCISC ln the sunshlne and fresh alr If you cannot play tennls or golf you can take walks Or perhaps you are fond of flshlng and huntlng Then there are boatlng and swlmmlng and ln the wlnter skatlng and coastlng Travellng for pleasure may also be mentloned as a recreatlon that adds a great deal to one s llfe To behold the bC3Utl6S and natural scenery to VICW the marvels of art and archltecture ln forelgn lands and to observe the llves and customs of strange people IS lndeed one of the real pleasures of llfe and one should glVC thls as large a place as posslble ln hls actlvltles 7 Next we must not neglect the aesthetlc Slde of llfe We must develop and malntaln a love for and appreclatlon of the beautlful ln nature muslc art and archltecture We should cultlvate good taste ln the decora tlon of our homes ln our clothes ln everythlng We should mlss a very great deal lf we dlcl not make It our object to hear good muslc and to see beautlful palntlngs ln thls regard we are partlcularly fortunate ln St LOUIS Wlth our Symphony Orchestra and the excellent opera companles that VlSlt us each wlnter there IS no reason why we should not have our share of the good thlngs that llfe affords ln these llnes If Grand Opera IS too CXPCDSIVC the phonograph wlll brlng the artlsts lnto our homes The Popular Concerts of the Symphony cost only a trlfle The Flne Arts Museum ln Forest Park should see us many tlmes every year yet It IS probable that three fourths of the people ln qt LOUIS have never been ln Slde of the bulldlng Excellent COPICS of famous palntlngs may be pur chased at prlces but llttle hlgher than people pay for cheap tawdry plctures We should mlss a great deal lf we pald llttle or no attentlon to the beautles and wonders of nature The woods and all they CODKBID the trees the blrds the Flowers what joy they QIVC to those who appreclate them' And lf we are permltted to see some of the grander wonders of ' - , , v - s - . , L - .
