THE CARNATION THE TENDENCY OF THE TIMES The twentleth tentury IS one of remarkable actlvlty and the tendency to stxll greater acttvlty may be rllu tr lted by any number of examples Our great great grandmothers would have been shocked at the xdea of women partlclpatlng ln pOlltlLb Nom nractxcally every country ln the world IS at least lnterestecl and ln the United btates and England the lde has been well worked out Over half our Qtates have some degree ofwoman suffrage and several have granted full suffrage for women ln December. l9l 7 Mlss Ranam entered our House of Representa tlves and lately lady Astors wonderful campalgn and entry mto the Engllsh Parllament has mterested the world Our schools too show a wonderful change m comparlson wxth those of a few vears ago The three R s do not now monopolxze the currlculum The children of our day have the opportunity of a much broader course of study The hugh schools are llke llttle cltles m themselves where the puplls may govern themselves study almost any subject suitable to thexr tastes jom clubs and socletles publxsh magazlnes and newspapers partrcxpate ln athletics and even enjoy the advantages of a school lunchroom' Our department stores show how much people attempt to do How many artlcles can you thmlc of that are not sold ln any blg department store5 Such stores now contam bakery shops art museums restaurants and even playrooms where the little chlldren are taken care of while thelr mothers shop' The employes also have their clubs and welfare assocla tlons through whlch dances and entertamments are glven Many of the churches haxe Gymnasiums and even swxmmmg pools besldes their social organlzatlons When we consider the fact that there are hundreds of examples whlch mlght be glven to show the apparent desire of every one to d everythmg what may we not expect and accomplxsh5 N H THE COMPLETE LIFE In the literature of by gone days we often hnd llfe compared to a thread that xs being spun and ln art we are shown a hooded figure repre sentmg Fate that slts wlth shears ln hand ready to cut the slender filament when our allotted tlme has passed by Today we may better lmagme Llfe as a movxng plcture film that xs bemg produced just as lt IS thrown on the screen but that unlike the films of the movles can be run only once For all of us the supply of film IS lxmlted and may be broken beyond repalr at any tlme Moreover as the film grows older lt gets more brittle and consequently IS more easlly broken according to the condltnons to whlch lt has been exposed and for whlch we are ourselves largely responslble Whether or not the comparlson IS a good one lt certainly IS true that our earthly lxves are lxmlted and that they are reellng themselves off day and mght summer and wlnter and that eventually the end wlll come It behooves us to do some careful thmklng as to how best to use our tlme instead of llvmg from one day to the next without plan or purpose It should be the atm of all of us to lead well balanced useful happy lnves It IS a favonte theme of mme that we should always be conscious of the fact that whatever may be our bellef as to an exlstence after death we all believe that we llve this partlcular llfe only once and that conse quently we should make the most of lt that we should make It as com O .
