SCHOTT The 1967 McKinleyite is dedicated to McKin- ley,s number one Bulldog, Principal Paul A. Schott. As a former member of the teaching staff and as the present principal, Mr. Schott has en- deared himself to the students of McKinley by his kindness and his enthusiastic interest for all of our activities. He has supervised the intricate workings of our school with untiring zeal. He has proven himself to be a spirited leader by his Willingness to give generously of his time to anyone Who was in need of help. Mr. Schott,s many achievements have earned for him the respect and admiration of the students and their parents. However, his many efforts and services do not stop with the close of school. At this time he steps out of his role as principal of McKinley, and becomes an influential citizen of our community. Everyone recognizes Mr. Paul A. Schott as a figure of kindness and generosity. Captured within this volume is an enormous path of memories. As you slowly look through the pages, moments of happiness or sadness may be remembered. Every face, whether familiar or strange, will trod the same pathway as have their forerunners. Many will also follow and experience new or old situations, which will not just be memories, but also effects on their lives. All these events and faces of the year 1966-67 are eternal and unforgotten. The difficult or won- derful days, teachers, dances, the ups and downs of games, and friends, are all a part of you and your school, McKinley. Knowl- edge is power. It is the force which causes us to succeed. The desire for knowledge, like the thirst of riches, continually increases as We repeat- edly reap from its advantages. But knowledge can be obtained only from study. It is most important to study now so that we will best be prepared for the future. Remember the secret of success is the pursuit of knowledge. If you wish to ad- vance in this world and attain the unattainable, one thing is certain- you must be educated as much as possible. The human mind will never cease to accept knowledge for the capacity of knowledge is infinite. -WITH SUCCESS Success was expressed by everyone on McKinley beat Massillon day. PATHWAYS TO MCKINLEY SPIRIT The road to spirit is proudly displayed by everyone at pep rallies. Our Bulldogs take this pathway to fame before each football game. Peppy and vivacious cheerlead- ers, snappy rhythms, and high- stepping majorettes are the ingredi- ents that add that special touch to all of our games. As tensions mount and spirits rise, everyone cheers the Bulldogs on to victory. This echoing spirit is not only de- tected at our school, but Wherever you go someone is making success a traditionv, for an outstanding Alma Mater-McKinley. These are the moments which make memories everlasting, as We travel the path- ways to McKinley spirit. The Marching 100 boosts morale in the Hall of Fame Parade, Wffwm' f 'MAJ . Every year brings forth a new senior class at McKinley. Each one has similarities, but each one also has its own distinctions. The class of 1966-677, has traveled an arduous but pleasant pathway throughout the year. The leaders who planned outstanding events, and followers who made them successful, have attributed much to McKinley. o Senior school spirit has always been at its maximum. To express their enthusiasm, amidst tears and sighs the seniors rang the victory bell at their last high school home game. Through the veil of triumphs and downfalls of a memorable four years, the seniors bid aclieu to high school life. It is time to say farewell to the halls of McKinley, but as one door shuts, another opens . . . and the class of 19673 looks forward to the future. Here at McKinley We are particularly fortu- nate in having three highly capable administrators: Paul A. Schott, head principal, Kenneth P. Kate, first assistant principal, and Andrew S. Kristy, sec- ond assistant principal. To these men, and indeed the entire administration, We offer our congratu- lations on a job Well done and encourage its con- tinuation as such. PAUL A. Many of our teachers have been with us for a long time and we have many that were add- ed to the staff this year. A teacherls Working day doesn't end when he leaves school in the afternoon. He has papers to grade and reports to make out at home besides the ones he does in school. A teacher must possess numerous qualities. He or she must have patience, knowledge, ability, understanding, and an open mind. These are the qualities that the teachers of McKinley possess. A We hope Mr. Carosello's first year of teaching at McKinley will prove to be rewarding for him. Led by Jim West, president, Kathy Quinn, vice-president, Pat Delancey, secre- tary, and Daphne Allen, treasurer, the new class proceeded to be one of the best McKin- ley has ever known. The freshmen were off to a good start, backing their school in a great variety of clubs and activities. That was the year McKin1ey,s football team returned from the suspension to post a suc- cessful season of six wins and four losses. Completing the regular season with a 17-1 record, our cagers Whizzed through the sec- tional, district, and regional tournaments, bowing in the semi-finals of the state tourna- ment to Dayton Belmont who went on to become State Champs. Our freshman attendant to the Football Queen was Connie DeGregorio. This was the last year that attendants represented all four classes. In the spring of 1964, Thespians presented UT he Teahouse of the August Moonf, Several freshmen held parts in this presentation, gain- ing valuable experience for the years yet to come. 1964-65 oNE STEP FORWARD With a yearis experience behind us, we re- turned in 1964 under the leadership of Pat Rostonski as president. The other class officers that year were Tom Cutler, vice-president, Sharon Boomhower, secretary, and Nate Fields, treasurer. Already well-established at McKinley, the sophomores continued to build a name for the class of 1967 through scholar- ship, through leadership, through spirit, through participation. Under a new football coach by the name of Don Nehlen, the Bulldogs completed a 9-1 season losing only to Massillon 20-14. The 1964-65 basketball team chalked up the sec- ond undefeated regular season in McK,s his- tory, finishing up with a 20-1 record after dropping a double overtime to Canton South in the Section tournament. On February 20, 1965, tragedy struck Mc- Kinley. A fire starting in the basement spread through the North Wing completely demolish- ing several classrooms and shops and destroy- ing the twelve-thousand volume library. But Within five days, classes were resumed and plans for reconstruction begun. Y Y W 'LV imswmy I! Kathy Wells was elected vice- president, Cindy Harvvart, secretary, and Jerry Hontas, treasurer. The year started out on a sad note as McKinley lost one of its staunchest Bulldogs, Mr. MBupv Rearick. The Massillon game Was played in honor of him. Mr. Ron Chismar took over the reins of football mentor that year, leading the Pups to a successful 7-3 season. The fifth edition of Bob Rupertis cagers sported a record of 17 Wins and only 1 loss in regular season play. They Went through the sectional tourney, losing the second game of the district to the Lincoln Lions. The main job of the Junior class is to plan the prom, and our officers did a beautiful job. The prom, entitled Young at Heartf was held on May 6, 1966 at the Moonlight Ball- room. Kathy Wells Was chosen as the junior prom attendant. On April 29 and 30, the McKinley Concert Choir and the Thespians presented the Broad- way musical KGuys and Dollsf' It Was a ter- rific production and something We will remember for many years to come. n , v W n ,, X 53 ,, W Bonnie Mayle Linda Mayle Wilma Mayle Angeline Mayo Patricia Mazzarella Linda McAdow Dennis McCauley Michael McClain Linda McFerren Mary Means Sherri Merritt John Meyers Marjorie Millard Frances Miller Cary Miller Jeffrey Miller Michael Miller Susan Miller Evelyn Mingo Charles Minner in ww raw Linda Minner Richard Mitchell james Moore Anthony Morakis Ted Morakis Donna Morgan Richard Motz Charlene Mujais Ted Muntean Verdella Murphy Dawn Myers Mary Nelson Kay Nemeth Michele Nemeth Thomas Oberster John Oswald Pamela Paci Eugene Palmer Judy Parker Shirley Parker Janice Parks Teresa Parsons Linda Patterson Ben Peavy Sherry Pepper Thomas Perciballi Hilda Perkins Jack Phifer Patricia Phillips Patricia Phillips Renell Pierpoint Yvonne Pifer Sharon Platt Charles Porter Girllena Potter Jerry Potter Leaurean Purney Kathryn Quinn Bertha Randle Dorothy Randle f 199 fsW,.,r.3 f' i, -' we .i Q18 1 R16 S it f S JA - W 2931 JSE!! On Iune 8, 1967, Commencement exercises were held for the forty-sixth graduating class of McKinley High School-the Class of 1967. Having completed three successful years, we made our senior year one that will not soon be forgotten. Perhaps the most well-remembered event that year was the Massillon game. McKinley,s football team, coached by Bon Chismar, broke a ten-year losing streak to beat the Massillon Tigers 25-16, and bring the victory bell to McKinley for the first time. VVe finished the season with 6 wins and 4 losses. Sharon Boomhower reigned as Football Queen with Pat Byrd, Sherry Pep- per, Sue Roberts, and Kathy Wells serving in her court. The ,67 cagers posted a 14-4 record in regular season play and, under the watchful eye of Coach Bob Rupert, advanced to the District finals losing to the Lincoln Lions by a score of 56-50. Michele Nemeth was chosen Basketball Queen and reigned with her court of Pat Byrd, Carol Cotopolis, Shirley Curtis and Carolyn Hite. On December 27, 1966, Key Club and Girls, Service League co-sponsered the annual Sweetheart Dance. At the semi-formal Belles and Beauxv, Leslyn Hiple was chosen Key Club Sweetheart. The Concert Choir chose c'Annie Get Your Gunn as the musical to be presented that year. It ran April 13, 14, and 15 and was one of the biggest successes McKinley ever boasted. May 5, 1967 marked the last big event in our senior year before Commencement. Moonlight in Mayv, the Iunior-Senior Prom, was held that evening at the Moon- light Ballroom. The end of our final year at McKinley High was fast approaching, but it was only the end of a beginning. The first three games turned up on the other side of the ledger as we dropped decisions to Niles, Warren, and Cleveland St. Joseph. We then re- grouped and scored victories over Lincoln, Central, and Columbus East. Our first big game came when we lost a heartbreaker to Steuben- ville, who was ranked Number One in the state. NO INDICATION OF ABILITIES Timers and judges confer after an exciting finish. This year,s edition of the McKinley swim team was indeed a unique one. Due to a lack of a pool in which to practice and hold meets, the squad was forced to hold limited practices. Each member contributed greatly to the team effort. The boys emerged vic- torious in three dual meets and captured twelfth place in the state meet. Although the team did not have a winning season, some individuals excelled. Bob Saut- ters set a new record in the 400-yard freestyle, and Gary Grunau in the 100-yard breast- stroke. The medley relay consisting of senior, Chuck Clark, junior, Gary Grunau, and soph- omores, Mike Mull and Bob Sautters, shat- tered a previous school record.
