The selection of a person for the dedication of a publication is a responsible job. In selecting this person many things must be taken into consideration. The person must pos- sess an outstanding character, pleasing personality, and a good sense of humor. Giving his time, without any thought of remuneration so as to benefit others is also essential. By selecting a person with these characteristics, it is our belief that an outstanding individual has been chosen for this honor. W It is with these thoughts and considerations in mind that we proudly dedicate this edition of the McKinleyite to Mr. Clayton E. Leyda. This has been an extremely successful year for the Se- nior Class, not only in school activities as a whole, but also for each senior individually. Many have received honors and awards, but most important, they have worked won- derfully together in all of the activities in which the class participated. Led by our president, Bob Clatterbuck, and his cabinet, Bob Hackley, Hank Urbach and Bill Baxter, the class of '56 accomplished many beneficial things. Through the wonderful year of sports, the parties, the Prom and then Graduation, to mention only a few, this will be remem- bered as one of the best years of our youth and also of McKinley High School. The 1955-56 school year was an exceptionally fine one for the Class of 57 . Dur- ing this year not only did the class accomplish many beneficial things as a whole, but there were also many individual triumphs received by outstanding members of the class. The junior-Senior party was a big success and the highlight of the school year, the Prom, was overwhelmingly gratifying, not only to the juniors who sponsored it, but also to the Seniors for whom it was put on. If the juniors keep their enviable trait of harmony and co-operation, there is no doubt that one of the finest classes to ever grace McKinley's halls will graduate in 1957. At the jr.-Sr. Convention, Al Hubbard tries to convince his fellow students to vote Junior Carnation. In the past year the Sophomore Class has given a fine preview of what they will be able to accomplish in future years. They were well represented in band, orchestra, foot- ball, basketball, track, and many other extra-curricular activities. The Snowflake Swing and the Spring Dance proved to be very successful, drawing a large number of sophomores. They have certainly proven themselves quite interested in their school by supporting Mc- Kinley's sports with a great deal of enthusiasm. Our school can be sure that their class of SS will never let them down. Things were really hoppin', bunny style, at the annual Soph- omore party. SRC Heading the Class of 59 this year were: fstandingb Vice President R 0 c k y McBride, fseatedl President jeff Zellmer, Secretary jan Eberhard, and Treasurer Kit Young. FRESHMEN The freshman class entering McKinley in September, 1955, was amazed at the strange and different customs of high school students. However, after a semester of hard work they conquered the idea of high school life. Great pride was taken in their fine football, basketball and track teams. The back- bone of the cheering for the freshmen basketball games was Carol Georgas, Bonnie Fisher, and Sally Hershell. Beauty honors were taken by Peggy jones. who was voted freshman attendant to the Football Queen. Socially, the Frosh had a lot of fun working together and planning their two very successful parties. We are sure that the Class of 59 will be one of the best in McKinley's history. Adequately representing their class was the fine freshman bas- ketball team, shown here bat- tling for a victory against Can- ton Lincoln freshmen. BOYS, BOOSTER A smooth running school which meets with suc- cess in both the academic and athletic fields has to have outstanding students - students who can carry the ball across the goal line or chalk up high scores in tests. A McKinleyite who cheers on the team is an essential part of a good school. He keeps the morale high, makes victory worth the effort, and makes sportsmanship of more value than success. Among the good citizens of McKinley were the Boosters who cheered their teams on to victory. The Boys' Boosters staged their biggest event of the year when they helped with the skit for the assembly preceeding the Massillon game and met with the Girls' Boosters for the Football Dance. For their yearly project they painted the Physical Therapy Room where the whirlpool bath and heat lamps are located. Mr. Clayton Leyda was their advisor. Exhibiting the whirl-pool bath in the Physical Therapy room, recently remodeled by the Boys' Booster Club, is basketball star Milan Zimer. Absent: Angie Dasouras. v. pres. The power packed Bulldogs started their third year under the coaching of Wade Watts by winning both of their games in the annual football preview. The regular season opened with the Pups crushing Cleveland Lincoln's Presidents by the score of 71-0. Coach Watts used practically every player on the bench in the highest school scoring splurge since l956. Leading the scoring parade for the Bulldogs was Nate Harris with two TD's and five extra points. Grimsley and Carnahan had two touchdowns each, while jackson, Reeves, Fontes, Barbosa and Phil Martin each tallied once. On a soggy turf at Warren Harding Stadium, the Bulldogs chalked up their second victory in their drive for the state title. jackson led the Bulldogs with 13 points in a 46-0 revenge victory over the Black Panthers. PHIL MARTIN WAYNE FONTES JOHN IFANTIDES RONALD jACK By defeating Toledo Scott 52-0, the Pups continued to hold their opponents scoreless. High man for McKinley was collected 24 points to bring his season A wine of Bulldog blockers cut down the opposition as Phil Martin i683 breaks loose for a touchdown. This type of team play was exident throughout the year and was the main reason for NicKinley's being State Champs. BILL WHITE PAUL MARTIN DICK MARTINS TONY KOELLNER Coach Watts closes his eyes in disbelief as the Pups score once more against Akron South's Cavaliers. Highlighting McKin1ey's 25-7 victory over Akron East was a 94 yard pass play from Bar- bosa to jackson. This followed an 80 yard com- pletion from Barbosa to jackson which was called back because of a penalty. High scorer for McKinley was Ron Carnahan who had two touchdowns in the fifth straight win for the Bulldogs. The Pups celebrated the Coronation of their queen by a 34-6 victory over the Steubenville Big Red. Paving the way was big Herm Hands jackson, who amazed the fans with his dexterity by making impossible catches with one hand. Herm tallied 12 points. All American back Nap Barbosa almost loses his balance on one of his famed quarterback sneaks, but manages to drive on for another McKinley first down. McKinley trounced Alliance 50-6 for their seventh straight win and retained first place in the football ratings. One of the surprises of the contest was a 20 yard field goal by Nate Harris. Once again the top scorer for the Bulldogs was Bob Williams with 12 points. Toledo Waite held the Bulldogs scoreless the first half and limited them to one touchdown in the third period. The Bulldogs started rolling in the final quarter to score 22 points and romp past the Toledo squad, 29-7. Carnahan had two TD's, the second coming on a 62 yard blast off tackleg Williams got his second six pointer on a 55 yard pass play from Barbosa in the final 14 seconds of the game. CHARLES REEVES AL CARTER CHARLES CRAVUFORD OBIE BENDER 141 With a man on his hack. All County halfback Ron Carnahan manages to drive past that last white line for a TD. With the majority of the regulars on the bench, McKinley extended their winning streak to nine games when they whipped Akron South 22-0. Williams extended his point total to 90 as he scored one of McKinley's three touchdowns on a 61 yard pass play from Grimsley. While millions of people viewed the spectacle of the Canton-Massillon game on television, a courageous crowd of 25,000 battled the elements of snow, sleet, and wind to jam-pack Fawcett Stadium and witness the deciding game for the football Championship of Ohio. The game opened with Harris kicking off to Massillon. McKir1ley's defense contained the Tigers for the first series of plays, forcing a punt situation. However, the pass from Massillon's center went wild and McKinley recovered on the Tiger 3 yard line. BOB LAMAR BOB PATTERSON 142 Quarterback Grimslcy 1673 skirts right end for another first down. All Ohio Nap Barbosa powered over right guard for the TD and Nate Harris's successful conversion made the score 7-0. In the second period Mas- sillon scored once and at intermission the score was knotted at 7-7. It was give and take in the third quarter as both teams battled furiously, trying to gain an advantage. Finally in the last period, the Tigers duplicated their first quarter trick with another wild pass from center and the Pups' Bill White recovered in the end zone giving McKinley a 13-7 lead which proved enough for victory. As a result of this victory McKinley not only annexed the State Champion- ship but ended Massillon's 7 year reign in this capacity. The pups were paced by Smilin' Milan Zimer with 16 markers while jackson had 15. The Pups gave their first really good show- ing as they polished off XWarren's Black Pan- thers, 68-34. Coach Rearick unloaded the bench in an effort to give all his cagers a chance to play. Led by Herm jackson with 25 points, the Bulldogs topped the Lincoln Lions, 59-50. The best basketball exhibition of the Pups to date was displayed as they pinned a 61-43 loss on Columbus South. Led once again by tangy Herm Jackson with 19 markers, all five of the Pup starters hit double figures as they rolled over Alliance, 66-54. The control and stall game elected by Lehman backfired as the Bulldog sharpshooters rampaged over the Polar Bears 53-12. This was the lowest score by an opponent since 1938. The Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders found the riding a bit rough as the Bulldogs downed Kent 48-39 with Thompson's 19 points leading the way. A last second lay in by Herm jackson stuck between the hoop and the backboard and gave the Akron South Cavaliers a l point margin but just enough to hand the Bulldogs their third defeat of the campaign, 43-42. Massillon and Alliance were each defeated for the second time by scores of 61-52, and 69-48. McKinley's next victim was the East Liver- pool Potters, 68-40, and this win showed that the Pups were ready to take on Timken's un- defeated Trojans. And ready they were as they romped by the Trojans with their top performance of the year, 70-49. So the Bulldogs finished the season with a fine 15-3 mark and their third consecutive city championship. They set a new school scoring record with 1081 points and were seeded third in the sectional tournament. JAMES IVIATTHEVCS WAYNE FONTES U and in is onl another name for the ackson ti in P , y J P as Herm nearly dunks the ball against Kent Rosevelt Here comes Smilin' Milan downcourt with the ball against Akron THE TOURNAMENT TRAIL The Bulldogs started the long tournament grind by defeating arch rival Massillon 64-47. Herm jackson led the attack with 30 points and Perry Thompson had 24. In a re-match with the Timken Trojans, the Bulldogs again proved their superior- ity by posting a 63-55 victory. This ended Timken's season with only two losses, both to McKinley. The third game saw McKinley romp past Alliance 74-60. Perry Thompson and Herm jackson scored 21 and 20 points to lead the attack. McKinley drew Sth ranked Akron South in the district tourney. South defeated Mc- Kinley 45-42 earlier in the season but this time McKinley won by one point 67-66. john Mclntyre clinched the game by calmly sinking two foul shots in the closing seconds. Perry Thompson came through in the clutch and led the attack with 33 points. South proved to be one of the finest quintets faced all season and all-Ohio jim Darrow was a very smooth per- former. The tournament returned to Canton and McKinley drew powerful Martin's Ferry. Ron Godfrey, Ferry's high scoring center, hooked in 32 points and almost derailed the Mc- kinley express, but the Pups rose to the occasion and managed to score a hard fought victory. Perry Thompson with 22 and Herm jackson with 19 led the McKinley attack. ln the regional finals it was 5rd ranked Can- ton South against 4th ranked McKinley. South entered the game with a perfect 25-0 record, which included an early season 67-66 victory over the Pups. McKinley had waited and hoped for a re-match with the W ildcats and this time rose to the occasion with a mighty team effort and humbled South 60--55. This victory sent McKin- ley to the State tournament for the l6th time. a record number. McKinley drew Columbus North and the two undefeated giants, Middletown and Cleveland East Tech, were paired in the first round of the state tournament. McKinley, employing an air- tight switching man-to-man defense, limited North to very few decent shots and the great re- bounding of Bryant, jackson, and Thompson en- abled the Pups to coast to a 70-43 victory. Every member of the Bulldog five gave a superb per- formance. The attack was led by Perry Thomp- son and Herman jackson with 22 and 16 points, respectfully. This victory, coupled with Middletown's rec- ord smashing victory over Cleveland East Tech meant that the Bulldogs and the Middies had survived the long tournament trail and now had reached the game that every team in Ohio had hoped for at the beginning of the season, the game for all the chips, the state champion- ship final. The game saw McKinley spurt into an early lead and Canton fans had hopes that the Bull- dogs could stop the mighty Middies, but Middle- town led by their giant 6'8 center, jerry Lucas, came roaring back and won the championship with an impressive 91-69 victory. Lucas, who scored 55 points in the semi-finals, tapped in 4-I against McKinley to lead the scoring. McKinley was paced by Perry Thompson and Herman -lack- son with 22 and 19 points. Zimer, Mclntyre and Bryant contributed l2, l2 and 5 points, respect- fully. This ended a very successful season for the Bulldogs who compiled an excellent 22--1 record against the toughest opposition available. McKinley's crack medley relay team con- sisted of Dick Roe, Ben Holder, jim Maurer and Ken Loehr. Breaking records seemed to be a habit of the Mermen as they started another championship season under Coach Ted Branin. In the first meet of the season, the Kent State Relays, the Bulldogs took second place, being disqualified in the final event. They started on the win trail with a 44-24 triumph over Akron Buchtel. Against the Pitt Frosh, the Pups were trailing at the end of the next- to-last event but the freestyle relay sped the distance in 1:41.1 to better their previous performances and to beat Pitt, 40-37. A string of 13 victories was snapped as the Bulldogs polished off Sand- dusky, 43-34. McKinley was leading by 2 points going into the last event but again the freestyle team came through with the needed markers. In their warmup for the Bowling Green Relays, the Mermen romped by Fremont Ross, 46-31. In the Bee Gee Relays, McKinley took first place, setting two new rec- ords in the process and totaling 26 points while Monroe and East Grand Rapids, Michigan, were second with 25 apiece. The Bulldog's freestyle relay team of Foster, Loehr, Troxler, and Van Horn set a new unofficial schoolboy record as McKinley swam past West- ern Reserve Academy, 51-26. Both of the meetings with Cleve- land University School were unsuc- cessful for the Bulldogs as they went down to defeat each time. In the second meet, there were five new rec- ords set between the two teams. McKinley's Mermen took their 17th Northeastern Ohio District champion- ship as the Pups chalked up a total of 100.5 points and qualified 14 swimmers for the State Meet. The trip to Columbus was very successful as the McKinley team regis- tered their eighth state championship by compiling a total of 46 points while Sandusky, their closest compe- titor, had 29. Firsts were taken by ,lack Foster in the 100 yard freestyle, Bill Van Horn in the 200 yard free- style and the freestyle relay team of Foster, Loehr, Troxler and Van Horn. The medley relay team of Holder. Roe, Maurer, and Loehr took a second and Roe took a fourth in the 100 yard backstroke. The freestyle relay team set a new state record at the meet. This ended another champion- ship swimming season for McKinley High School, Coach Branin and the boys. Exhibiting his brilliant form in the swan dive is Tom johnson, senior who compiled the third highest total points in the history of the district meet. The boys doing the 100 yard freestyle for the mai- ority of the season were jim Maurer and Ben Holder, Spending most of their time on their backs were the bovs who swam 100 yard backstroke - Bud Trox- ler and Dick Roe.
