E McKINLEYITle 192 Thls bulldlng was located on the slte occupled bw Central Hlgh School todax For exght years thxs was Lanton s prlncxpal school CThere was by thls trme another school of ldentlcal constructlon whlch as completely as we can ascertaln was not supported so well and functloned only spasmodlcallyj Tuscarawas Street rn those days vsas only a cow path for N O T puddle jumpers were st1ll tadpoles ln the great pond of the unknown In 1816 four years after Perry won the battle of Lake Erxe the old cabln was torn down and the Academy was erected 1n nts place The Academy bulldlng was of milled lumber hence lt represented an advance 1n school construction Llfe w1th1n these four walls was perhaps, much the same as that rn the log cabln The Academy was torn down ln 1842 and replaced by the frame structure known as the Umon School In a verv short t1me the frame bulldlng was replaced by a plaln brxck bulldlng two storles hlgh A small octagonal tower rose over thls hall of knowledge The front entrance was on Tuscarawas Street vshlle a hall extended from thls entrance to the rear whlch IS now Second Street Northwest On the second Hoor the rooms were equxpped wlth movable partrtlons so that they could be moved and one large hall thus formed Thls hall was used for amateur theatr1calproduct1ons Scenery for the llttle theatre was secured by dona tlon of a local German who had no small ab1l1tv as a scen1c artlst In the course of time the east and west wlngs were added because of the ln creaslng S176 of the COmmUDltV Here ln 1851 the first Board of Education was organized Cmlnus the hxckorsl and also 1n thls place the first properlv organlzed hlgh school was formed durlng the school vear of 1840 1841 Prom thls we can compute that the Canton Hlgh School has been establlshed for sevents two years UNION SCHOOI I 161 T H ' T ' 2 y . . , . , V V , . - . ll ' Y, , ' 1' ' , ' , .
