With the exception of Mary Ellen Sichling, they were all new to the position, but each carried off the responsibility very well. They are left to right, Alice McPherson, Mary Ellen, Shirley Sydnor, and Sharon Reed. Physical support was provided the team by train- ers Bob Dosier (right) and Lou Kampmeyer. Their work behind the scenes helped make possible the per- formances on the court, and in this year of accidents, sprains, and strains, they were worth their weight in tape. Despite a pre-season accident which cost the serv- ices of a regular and two squadmen for the whole year and another regular for the first semester, coach James E. Collie ' s Bearcats came home with a very satisfying 18-9 record, and more important, a share of the PCC title. Rich Herrin, a 13-point-per-game scorer as a sophomore, and JV letterman Jim Jackson were unable to work out all year. Letterman Phil Leuellen could appear briefly only in two games. Regular George (Tip) Butler came back second term in time to get in 14 games and rack 193 points. When the accident news made the rounds of the conference, heads were shook and McKendree was relegated automatically to the second division. These predictions looked good when Shurtleff beat the Bearcats, with Hoyt ineligible, in the league opener at Lebanon. But the defending champions bounced back to win the next nine and a well-deserved split of the crown. Though playing subpar ball against several weak con- tenders, McKendree ran all over Rose Poly, edged Shurtleff at Wood River, and finished the PCC race by tripping Greenville 92-63. Several members of McKendree ' s 1954 track team were gathered for this pre-season picture. Shown, left to right (kneeling), are Phil Leuellen, Virgil Motsinger, Burton Gedney, Dale Sanner;( standing) coach James E. Collie, Douglas Johnson, Charles Leckrone, Darrel Conner, Finis Dewe, Dick Thompson, Rich Stein. Other season highlights were a 19-point pasting of Scott in the first meeting, victories over well- rated Missouri Valley- -twice conqueror of Shurtleff--and Kalamazoo, and a 98-84 burst against Quincy to close out the campaign. Gene Hoyt, 6-7 front-liner, added a new set of career scoring records to the books to go with his season and game standards. In 115 appearances as a Bearcat he fired 2510 points for a game average of 21.8. M club members, left to right Tip Butler; (standing) Dean Heitman, singer, Ed Storment, Charles Leckrone.
