FOOTBALL GKEESPORT HlGl-l'S GRIDIRON TIGERS ended their hard-fought 1961 season with an impressive record of 7 wins and 3 losses. Guiding the squad was Coach Harold HDuke', Weigle who was assisted by Charles 'LDing Schaeffer, Noel Cuyot, and Richard Bowen, Dennis Kuremsky was the team's trainer. The season opened with an explosive three-game winning streak in which Melfeesport scored for 12 straight quarters, amassing U0 points while holding their opponents to a single TD, The first three contests were exhibition games with Melieesport romping easily over Classport, 25-6, and Central Catholic, 26-0, and then having everything their own way in a decisive 39-0 victory over Turtle Creek. The hopes encouraged by the first three games abruptly faded, however, when the Tigers were eliminated from the Class AA race in the first section game by a 7-14 setback at the hands of Altoona. The Altoona Lions were suc- cessful in tricking the Tigers with an unorthodox maneuver on the first play of the game, putting themselves into scoring position. Back at home the following week the Tigers recovered their former strength, copping their fourth victory as they made Har'-Brack bow 27-14. 1961 SCHEDULE McK. The squad's ability to bounce back after defeat was exhibited in the next two games when the Tigers powerhoused Duquesne, 35-0, and edged New Kensington in a neat 13-6 setback, The game with New Kensington was the last night game at World War Memorial Field. Although the Tigers gave an admirable account of themselves against Monessen in the season's ninth contest, the undefeated Greyhounds were too strong and the Tigers received their third loss. 27-7. The final contest was played against West Mililin North on Saturday afternoon, inaugurating a new chapter in Tiger football history, with MHS toppling the new rivals, 20-7. Seniors who played their last year of high school football included Frank Beck, Jerry Elkins, Rich Grygo, Dave Jenkins, Marcus Kozar, Ron Pugh, Al Sabo, Ed Stanko, Myles Stepanovich. ll i f' N. 5 H W7 g a RYA Aff l , f ta 2, 4 ffl' T 58 JUNIOR VARSITY-Under the direction of Coach Roy McMunn and his assistant, Charles White, the 1961 MHS Junior Varsity captured the long half of a seven-game schedule, winning four and dropping three.
