There are memorahle events like the senior prom, pep rallies, and bonfires . . . and there are the ordinary, routine happenings like trading the latest gossip between classes, the sound of the hand practicing each morning, and the daily grind of homework. The notable experiences will remain for- ever in your memory as the highlights, the long-looked-forward-to and the neve1'-to-he- forgotten markers in your high school career: the thrill of getting a lead in the senior play, the excitement of seeing a winning touch- .Lum .gp oiinv-nr,p---1-1-t down. the feeling you get each time you hear the lied and Blue, and the personal satis- faction ot' heing accepted at college or getting a ,ioh you've hoped l'or. Q 9 v,:'is,',7,l THE HISTORY of McKeesport High School stretches back 78 years to 1881 when the Board of Education voted to establish a high school. The school offered a three-year course and had its first graduating class in 1884 when seven girls and three boys received diplomas. From the Class of 1894 came the tirst four graduates to go on to college. For several years classes were held in the Wal- nut Street Building and then in Pierce's Hall until 1891 when the high school was moved to the new Ninth Avenue Building. In 1901, the present Shaw Avenue Building was constructed as the city's first high school, but increased enrollment demanded the construction of the present high school building which was lirst occupied in 1916 and then enlarged by 38 rooms in 1924. In 1928 some of the ninth grade students attended classes in the newly opened George Washington School, and in 1940 vocational classes met in the new Vocational School. During the first years, the number of courses available was very limitedg the early school library consisted of half-a-dozen reference books. Chemistry and mechanical drawing were added to the curricu- lum in 1895. The four year course did not appear until 1897. Two years later, a two year commercial course was offered, and in 1902, a five year course qualified graduates to teach in grade schools. The first written exams were used in 18993 in 1908 the football team and the orchestra were organized. The first Yough-A-Mon appeared in 1918, and the Red and Blue made its debut in 1922. The football field was completed in 1927 g lights were added in 1945. The enrollment of the high school quickly in- creased. For the iirst twenty years, there were less than 200 students attending classes, but by 1916 the number had increased to 1,000. The highest enroll- ment was in 1939, when 4,607 students came to Mc- Keesport High School. This year 3,686 pupils attend classes in the four buildings. - K.M. Busy reporters and photographers keep the student body well informed about the latest developments in the four high school buildings. Columns include information about scholarships, clubs, social activi ties, sports, student problems, and news from other schools. An editorial staff of thirteen, headed by Beverly Brunori, directs the reporters, typists, columnists, and artists. The entire group spends one period every day in addition to many hours of' their own time working on the paper, which is published once every three weeks. ELONG1NG TO BAND at McKeesport High School involves hours of hard work and practice but provides band members with a real sense of accomplishment. Daily practices begin at Renzie Park in August two weeks before school starts. During football season the band drills for two hours every school morning. At the games the band dominates the half time entertainment when 98 musicians, 8 majorettes, color guard, and drum major march down the field to perform their array of formations. Bright new blue and white uniforms added a special dash of color to this year's routines. In 1957 the band earned a rating of Superior in the State Finals of National Forensic competition. Individual members also got a chance to exhibit their talents in competition and proved their abilities by bringing back four Superior and Excellent ratings. After football season, the band becomes a concert ensemble, presenting two stage performances each year. This year's band officers were: President Mike Lauerrnan, Vice President Robert Kolich, Treasurer Jim Morgan, Secretary Myra Jo Rogan, Publicity Chairman Jim Jeffries, and Sophomore Representative Evan Broman. With baton twirling, plume flying, and whistle blowing, druni major Bob Lzittzi led thi- Tiger niarching hand down thc field in half-time pcrformzinces. The previous record was 36 points, set by Jim Riley in 1953. The record of 138 field goals in a season, held jointly by Stu Heller and Gene Danko of the 1955 State Champions, was broken by Bill Baugh who blistered the cords for 164 two-pointers. McKeesport drew a first round bye in the WPIAL tournament and entered the quarter- final round on March 11.
