SADNESS CAME to McKeesport High School in 1956 with the deaths of Dr. Leo R. Travis, Superintendent of Schools, and Mr. E. O. McKee and Mr. James H. Lewis, members of the faculty. Dr. Travis graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1928. He attended California State Teachers College and completed his education at the University of Pittsburgh where he got his A.B. degree in 1928, his M.A. in 1931, and his Ph.D. in 1945. He came to McKeesport in 1930 as a social studies teacher in the High School and in 1942 was elected principal of Fawcett Building and in 1943 of Versailles Avenue Building as well. Dr. Travis was named Secretary and Business Manager in 1948, and was elected Superintendent of Schools in 1953, the position he held when he died September 21, 1956. Mr.. McKee, a graduate of McKeesport High, received his bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1937, and his master's degree in 1948. He began teaching English and social studies in 1939 at George Washington School, and in 1942 commenced three years with the U. S. Army. Mr. McKee resumed teaching in 1946 at the High School with classes in U. S. History and organ. His death came on September 21, 1956. Mr. Lewis began his teaching career in the Newcastle Schools in 1927, and came to McKees- port in 1930 as a teacher of electricity. In 1931 he received his B.A. degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Lewis taught at the High School and then at Vocational School until his death on July 21, 1946. 1
