Dr. Howard C. McElroy is principal and Mr. Shelby Erwin is viceprincipal in the High School where sophomores, juniors, and seniors receive instruction in commercial, academic, business, and college preparatory courses. Miss H. Gertrude Brown is the Girls' Adviser and Mr. Harry G. Pry is the Guidance Counselor at the High School. Mr. Arthur O. Horn is principal and Mr. Bert Johnson is in :harge of Vocational Education at Vocational School. Tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students receive training in courses that range from commercial art to sheetmetal work. lvlr. John S. Mc' Featers is principal of George Washington, and Mr. Benjamin B. Disegi is principal of Shaw Avenue, the two buildings where ninth grade students begin their studies in McKeespo1t High. This year marked several changes in high school administration. Mr. Horn, principal of George Washington for fifteen years, became principal of Vocational School. Mr. Erwin, who had been student counselor since 1940, became vicefprincipal ofthe High School. Mr. McFeaters, assistant principal of the High School since 1939, became principal of George Washington. Mr. Disegi was named principal of Shaw Avenue, since he joined the McKeesport Schools in 1940, Mr. Disegi had been a teacher of physical education at Vocational School. Dr Clifford B. Bryce Mr. Harold Blid Mr. Charles H. sim ML William J, Cox EDUCATION in McKeesport High School is directed by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Leo R. Travis and by nine School Board members elected by the citizens of the community. President of the Board of Directors for 1955 is Dr. Clifford Bryce, vice president is Mr. Harold Blid. As Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Travis has the responsibility of managing the affairs of the School District. The Superintendent develops' new courses of instruction, revises old ones, organizes schools and classes, and supervises methods of instruction. He is responsible for purchasing supplies and equipment. He nominates personnel for approval by the Board and is responsible for supervising the work of all school employees. The superintendent prepares the school district budget and makes inancial reports, he is charged with the construction, main' tenance, and operation of school buildings, By helping the public to understand the Board's policies and school aims, he is a specialist in public relations. Dr. Travis' assistants are Dr. James C. Craig, Assistant to the Superintendent in charge of Elementary Education, Miss M. Rigby Hill, Secretary of the School District, and Mr. R. D. Cannon, Assistant to the Superintendent in charge of Buildings. The Board of School Directors is an example of selffgovernment in action, for by electing members to serve on the Board, the public is directing its own school system. The Board represents the will of the people, but the members must also be leaders of the people, for their basic responsibility is to provide for all pupils educational programs that will meet the needs of the community. lt is the Board's duty to provide and hnance good schools, to maintain suitable school buildings, to develop good staffs, and to establish policies for the school system. ln regular monthly meetings and in special committee sessions, the School Board discharges its responsibilities for educational leadership.
