DEDICHTIUH T HAT EDUCATION became the career of Dr. James H. Lawson was only natural. From the time he walked fifty-five miles at tfhe age of eleven from rhis home in Elk Valley, Tennessee, to the Lincoln Memorial University at Harrogate, Ken- tucky, until the time he received his doctorate of education degree from the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Lawson was actively seeking knowledge and understanding. As Superintendent of Schools he had the opportunity to extend to others his enthu- siasm for education. After his early schooling at Lincoln Memorial University, Dr. Lawson attended Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Kentucky, and the Uni- versity of Chicago, majoring in mathematics and receiving bachelor's degrees from both institutions. He becanie a teacher and later principal in Iellico, Tennessee, taught in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and served with the United States Army during World War I. After the war Dr. Lawson reswned teaching at Parkersburg, taking graduate work at the George Peabody College for Teachers in Tennessee and at Valparaiso University in Indiana. In 1920 Dr. Lawson came to McKeesport as head of the Mathematics Department in the high school, in 1924 he became assistant principal in the high school, and in 1935 he was named Superintendent of Schools. While Dr. Lawson was superintendent, the new East End Building, the Vocational School, and the new Fifth Avenue Building were erected. Under his direction the school program was enriched and extended to include features like special classes for retarded children, a kindergarten plan, school libraries, distributive education, beauty culture, and improved home economics facilities.
