Under the leadership of coach Mike Lhotka, assistant Dick Holen, and seven seniors, the defending Tri-County Champions had another successful season, but it didn't stop them. Mentor and Crygla were the first opponents, which the Scots overpowered for victory. Next came the Homecoming Came against Middle River. With a record of 3-0, the Scots traveled to Ok-lee to meet the Bobcats. They suffered a disappointing loss, and had to win the rest of their games to earn a place in the division play-offs. The three toughest games of the year were coming up, and the team was determined to win. Clearbrook and Convick were challenging teams, but the Scots fought hard to win. Plummer was the next step to the play-offs, with the Scots winning on a las minute kick-off return touchdown by Paul Kiccker. The Scots then had no problem defeating Erskine in the last game of the season. Oklee became the place for the rematch between the North Champions, Oklee, and the South Champions, McIntosh. For 3 1 2 quarters there was no score, until Oklee got a lucky break and put six points on the board. The Scots tried a trick play, but it was broken up before they made it to the end zone. This ended the season but there were still many accomplishments to look back on. The South Tri-County Champions, the Scots, named four players to the all-conference team. They were: Carey Burslie, Mike Dietrich, Tim Anderson, and Paul Kiecker. Junior quarterback Larry Haugen was named Co-Most Valuable player of the conference. Boy’s Basketball Row 1: Assistant coach Mr. Evcnson, head coach Mr. Carlson. Row 2: Mark Molstre, Dave DeFrang, Peter Tranby, David Rolf, Mike Dietrich, Tim Rolf, Kevin Johnson, Tim Anderson, Daryl Fladhammer, Carey Burslic, Larry Haugen, Paul Kicckcr. The boy's basketball team was again superb this year. They were led by four senior players; Kevin Johnson, Mike Dietrich, Tim Anderson, and Carey Burslie. The guys really put a lot of hard work and hustle into this season and came out on top in conference. Coach Carlson was very excited and pleased with his ballclub. The guys played a lot of tough games, in which the fans yelled in support of them. Defeating Fosston twice and Mahnomen once, seemed to be the players favorite moments. Congratulations to Coach Carlson and his players for another great and exciting season. Senior Players Kevin Mike Tim Carey Jr. High Football Row 1: M. Carver, B. Bursheim, R. Bly, K. Zahl, T. In thirteen seasonal games, the Scots played an aggressive Bump-Set-Spike offense. The girls played many matches in which either team could have won, since they were so close. The girls again had their funny moments this year, but also had some bad ones. Miss Johnson got so excited sometimes when showing the girls how to bump the ball, she would say, Don't swing your arms ... Swing your legs! All of the gym lights were again dusted, but the clock and the water fountain were demolished! They may be kicked out of the gym next year. At the Annual Volleyball Banquet, the Scots again had the most humorous skit. Kris Bergman was selected to the All-Conference team. The girls will be back next year with two wishes. The first is to be undefeated, the second is that maybe Miss Johnson will wear the right colored dress to match her corsage! The girl's basketball team hosted a very tough schedule of games this year. The conference teams were all evenly matched, and the Scots had a lot of very close games. Although the girl's didn't have much height, they made up for it by playing an aggressive man-to-man defense, and using a full-court press. The fans were thrilled by many games which were won in the final minutes. The girl's will lose three seniors this year: Patty Strom, Mary Strom, and Birthe Sonne. Next year, Coach Johnson will have seven juniors back. Everyone is looking forward to another good season and a conference title. W Row 1: J. Vaa, L. Olson, S. Aloisio, L. Finkle, C. Thompson, C. Most important of all I have learned to cooperate with others and discipline myself. Many times when things weren't going just right, I got discouraged and felt as if I wanted to give up. However, after many hours of planning and hard work, the yearbook was completed. As the final copy was mailed to the company I felt very relieved. When the yearbooks arrived this spring my feelings changed to that of satisfaction and accomplishment. I hope that we have captured the highlights of the school year and that the 1977 Highlander will hold many memories for you. I'd like to thank my staff and our advisor, Mrs. Salveson, for all their help. I say a special thank you to my assistant editor, Pam Aanen-son, and wish her and her staff the best of luck in putting out the 1978 Highlander. Patty Strom, Editor Rcnita Molstre (Ass't. Though we seldom have big headlines, We strive to meet our deadlines. When we catch a reader with a smile, All the headaches seem worth while. And we would never trade a minute, For the satisfaction that is in it. Best of hick to next year's staff. Magazine Drive Manager Tim ro if Captains Sheila Cannon Larry Haugen Top Salesmen Darlene Johnson Nancy Versdahl Teresa Hagen The 43 member junior class had a very successful QSP Magazine Drive this year. Sheila Cannon and Larry Haugen were elected team captains, and Tim Rolf became the business manager. They set a goal of $4000.00, and the ten day race began. With 2 days left, it seemed sure that they wouldn't make it, being almost a thousand dollars short. The juniors surprised everyone by getting a second wind and skyrocketing over their goal. The final tabulations gave them $4850.00. Larry's team won the team competition, while Darlene Johnson was named high salesman. She was followed by Nancy Versdahl and Teresa Hagen. Besides gaining over a $2000 dollar profit for class activities and prom, some of the juniors received posters, class mascots, and class mugs for their efforts. Congratulations to the Junior class! Girl’s And Boy’s Staters : V ; i Paul Schow, alternate; Patty Strom, representative; Nicki Rabcn, alternate; ? Jack Randall, representative. I thank the American Legion Auxiliary [ for giving me the opportunity to attend Minnesota Girl's State. At Girl's State, we t learned about our U.S. government by forming our own government and going f through all it's processes. The highlight of [ the week was our visit to the State Capitol, j where we held our own sessions of the House S and Senate. As a girl's stater, I learned i more about our government in one week of I Girl's State, than I did in a whole year at [ Civics classes. | 11 Patty Strom I was quite honored to be chosen from I Mac-Hi to attend Boy's State at St. Johns : University, which is located near St. Cloud. | During my week long stay, I attended lec- i tures on the Minnesota local, and state j levels of government with boys from other towns in our state. I took part in the chorus and made a special effort to meet other I kids. I really learned a lot about our government and at the same time, I had a lot of fun. Jack Randall 49 Dear Friends. I want to thank you, but I cannot. Not with words. What I have experienced here with you is invalueable. What I have been taught here about life and people will do me good the rest of my life. The world is smaller than you think. Denmark and America arc so different yet, they are alike. I have learned a lot from you. I hope that you have learned a lot from me, too. It is the only way in which I can thank you. Everything together has a meaning for me and I am going to use it in my future. Friends, you have sown flowers along the side roads of my life. (fitr+kt- SoVlMA_ Our AFS Student Birthe Sonne so AFS Mary Strom Dear Friends, Spending the summer of 1976 in the country of Turkey has added so much to my life. I had always dreamed of going on a trip overseas, and it came true. I never thought one country could be so different. I did not attend school. My summer was spent swimming in the Mediterranean Sea twice a week, entertaining family and friends, and learning how to adjust to a totally new culture. Living in a big city was different from living in McIntosh or Winger; walking the streets alone was not heard of. I went through a time of home-sickness and adjustment. However, it is always sad to leave people one has become very much attached to. I don't know when I will see my Turkish friends or my host family again, but I do plan to return someday. All that is left in the back of my mind are memories; which add up to one big dream come true. 51 StephaTlie Soring Renae Zahl Queen Of Scots Queen Candidates T ami Youmans 52 Homecoming 1976 The Royal Court Row 1: Coby Burslie, Sue Schimanski, Sheila Cannon, Tami DeFrang, Tim Rolf. Homecoming festivities became the highlight of the great football season this year. Preparation included decorating the gym and practicing skits to present at coronation. Michelle Voxland provided us with the slogan, Watch the Scots drown the Skippers in the Middle River. When the big evening of coronation came, everyone was excited. The State Band provided music for the processional and recessional, as the Grand March began. The cheerleaders and their escorts led the way, and were followed by the rest of the Royal Court. The ninth grade attendants were Sue Schimanski and Coby Burslie, sophomore attendants were Tami DeFrang and Paul Kicckcr, and the Junior attendants were Sheila Cannon and Tim Rolf. The gift bearers were Karen Bauer and Mike Vesledahl from the second grade. The queen candidates and their escorts were Stephanie Sorvig and Bob Finkle, Tami Youmans and Carey Burslie, and Renae Zahl and Tony Charlton. Our 1975 queen, Sue Stordahl. was escorted by Mike Dietrich. As the program went on, each class tried to make the audience laugh by presenting their skits. The sophomores came up with the trophy, which of course, was disputed by the rest of the student body. Each of the queen candidates was slightly embarrassed as their life stories were read, and the cheerleaders pepped everyone up with cheers and the school song. Alumni speaker was Chad Burslie, who fired the football players up by telling them, Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing. As the big moment arrived, everyone was tense. Jack Randall, M.C. for the evening, presented the football to Stephanie Sorvig, the 1976 Queen of Scots. Homecoming became successful when the football players took Chad's advice and defeated the Skippers handily 24-6, while Queen Stcph and her Royal Court looked on. After the game, Desperado provided music for the victory dance. Congratulations to Queen Stepli ;ind all of the football team for not only a great Homecoming, but for a great season! 53 Escort for 1975 Queen Mike Dietrich Queen Stephanie Sorvig Escort Bob Finkle Jack Randall .Chad Burs lie ...Sophomores M.C. ..........
