A BANNER YEAR McIntosh County Academy Darien, Ga. 31305 1988 Buccaneer Table of Contents Opening 1 Administration and Faculty 17 Seniors 25 Underclassmen 45 Clubs 75 Sports and Spirit Boosters 93 Events 123 Ending 131 Advertisements 137 000 McJ|fTQgH CO QC O€mY The athletic program gener- ates school spirit and teaches students the ability to work with others. Students who partici- pate in athletic events must also possess the will to succeed in the classroom. Our athletes have represented our school well by exhibiting not only physical skills but also outstanding sportsmanship in the various events. We are proud to declare that it has been A BANNER YEAR in athletics. 2 OPENING OPENING 3 With the help of teachers and administra- tors, we are continually striving to reach our goals in academics. The new discipline code helped prepare the students to make proper choices not only in the school setting but also in later life. The English Department strengthened our understanding of ourselves as well as our language skills by inaugurating a writing curriculum held each Monday in all English classes. Because of these endeavors and many other efforts to expand the educa- tional programs of our school, we can honestly say that the past year was A BANNER YEAR in academics. 4 Pep rallies provide an opportunity for students to express their enthusi- asm and appreciation for all phases of our athletic program. By working to- gether the band and cheerleaders in- spire both the teams and the student body. We proudly proclaim 1987-88 A BANNER YEAR in spirit. 6 OPENING OPENING 7 An important aspect of social life is the opportunity to express our individual emo- tion. These emotions cast attitudes reflect- ed not only in our own community but also the outside world. Though our emotions for the past year have run the gamut, they have been hopeful. The positive attitude exhibit- ed by students, teachers, and administra- tors has truly earned the title A BANNER YEAR in Emotions. 7 IN F.MOTltfN.S Emotions happy ... confused ... exas- perated . . . enthusiastic ... skeptical ... thoughtful ... cheerful ... sad ... sorrow- ful ... depressed .. . hyper ... angry ... frustrated ... blah ... lack luster ... ec- static ... blue ... bored ... dejected ... hysterical ... rejected . . . miserable . . . disgusted ... nonchalant... apathetic ... exultant! Looking back through an annual, one is inevitable reminded of friends. Friends are the people who unquestionably love and support you throughout life. People may grow and change but friendships are forever. While pursuing the pages of this annual, you can truly see A BANNER YEAR in friendship. Each year we devour billions of chips and drink gallons of coke at school. To many of us “junk” food IS nutrition, but a better definition of the word can be found in our school cafeteria. During the past year our menus have featured a va- riety of food groups low in both sodium and cholesterol. Record numbers of stu- dents now participate in the school lunch program. The lunchroom staff did their best in making it A BANNER YEAR in Nutrition. OPENING 13 i' 7 iliiiiili! j'ij', f!j 1:11. ii !'i! OPENING 15 For thirty-one years, Mr. Joseph Washington has been dedicated to help- ing students and working with all phases of the total school program. His hard work with landscaping has beautified the school campus for all of us. Always generous, Mr. Washington treats many students and faculty members to his an- nual spring barbecue. A basket- ball coach for twenty-eight years, Mr. Washington can be seen at most athletic events. Ever a good sport himself, “Mr. Wash“ will long be remembered for his starring role in the faculty homecoming skit. Despite his many school responsi- bilities, Mr. Washington has also been involved in various community projects, civic organizations, and church func- tions. Therefore, with much pride and affection we proudly dedicate the 1987 BUCCANEER to Mr. Joseph A. Washington. 16 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRA- TION Mr. Thomas E. Often these minor mishaps do not turn into major mishaps, thanks to the patience and assistance provided by our secretarial staff. The lunchroom staff makes the day easier by supplying food for our insatiable appetites, and the maintenance staff keeps our buildings clean. I believe the future depends upon mutual understanding and cooperation of business, industry, labor, religious and educational institutions, the home, and by the peoples of our own and other lands. I agree to do my utmost to bring about better understanding and cooperation on the part of all these groups. I believe every individual should prepare for a useful occupation and should carry on that occupation in a manner that will bring the greatest good to the greatest number. I believe every individual should be actively interested in better social, political, community and family life. I believe every individual has the right to earn a living at a useful occupation and that this right should not be denied because of race, color, creed, sex or handicap. I believe every individual should take responsibility for carrying out assigned tasks in a manner that will reflect credit to oneself, one's associates, school and community. Guests included the 224th Joint Commu- nication Support Squadron from St. Simons Island, Georgia, of which Mr. Way is a member; Ma- jor Donald N. Edmunds, Jr., of the Georgia Air Nation Guard; Board of Education members; and var- ious people from the community. The chorus and band led us in many patriotic songs, and both groups performed certain selec- tions which pertained to the occa- sion. Georgia Author’s Week The week of October 16 was recognized as Georgia Au- thor’s Week. It was a time for us to recognize authors from our state. The media specialist, Mrs. Louise Warren, wrote to Georgia authors, such as Eugenia Price of St. Simons and Beth Ingall of Brunswick, to recognize them. She also invited Georgia author. Dr. William Warren, to speak with English students about his writing experiences. He has had five young adult books and eight sports book published during the past tweleve years. Prom 87 The 1986-87 prom was an evening of magic and fantasy. The theme “Somewhere Out There was illustrated by deco- rations which included a stair- case leading to a star filled sky. The entrance to the once plain gym now led to an illuminated ballroom. Upon entering, each guest was transported to a world of enchantment. Chosen as king and queen for the evening. Her- bert Simmons and Rhea Bran- nan were featured with their partners in a spotlight dance. As the evening waned, guests helped themselves to the deli- cious buffet, danced to the con- temporary music, admired one another’s finery, or simply so- cialized with one another. All too soon the gala event was over and reality returned. However, we were left with beautiful memories of our voyage to “Somewhere Out There. We chose “A Banner Year’ as our theme to emphasize our efforts to find the positive aspects of this year, rather than focusing on the negative. We’ve also tried to use as many pictures as possible be- cause we feel that pictures hold many more memories than words ever can. We began this year with only six old staff members returning to journalism class; however, the inexperienced staff learned quickly and we never missed a deadline. We are proud to say that we have sold more annuals this year than in the past years, and we would like to thank the students who showed enthusiasm for our project. We also would like to express our gratitude to those who volun- teered pictures, artwork, and time to the publication of the 1988 BUCCANEER. We would also like to thank Jill Pachmaycr and Keith Taylor for all their help in making the important decisions. We especially must thank Mrs. Phyllis Pitncr because without her dedication, publishing this annual would have been impossible. Our annual is more than a photo album. It is a collection of the memories of our banner year, and it is a remem- brance of friends and faces who have touched our lives and created the people we are. Our staff has locked a part of itself in these pages, and we hope that as you look through them you might find a part of yourself hidden there, too. 7 ttu TjiUlikWi 156
