Under first year head coach Ray Meadows, the Bucs enjoyed a 9-9 season with all but four losses coming from AAAA schools. After a disastrous start, MCA came on strong in the last half of the season to win 8 out of 10 games. Four of these wins were most important as they came against sub-region foes Long Co., Charlton Co., and Patterson. The Bucs had several outstanding athletes on the '81 squad, including 6 seniors. Among these were James Green, shortstop and most valuable player; Byron Alston, leftfieid and best hitter; Robert Edwards, catcher and Buccaneer Award; Mike Hawthorne, Pitcher (6-3); John Littles, first base; and Greg James, right field. Using coastal Georgia decor, students and teachers decorated the MCA cafeteria Friday night and Saturday in preparation for the band Luv 'n Haight. Students danced into the night and were most appreciative to the sponsors Mr. and Mrs. Heck, Ms. Goodson, Mrs. Lane, Mr. Brown, and Mrs. Pittman. 20 Graduation 1981 We shall never pass this way again, said the graduating class of 1981. The night was filled with fear, anxiety and excitement. Along with the stigma of leaving high school and becoming members of the adult race, the class made history. It was the first class to graduate in the new gymnasium at MCA. Also, it was the largest class, graduating 109, in about four years. tss LEADERS 0f. Tardiness, continual disruption in class, skipping, smoking without a permit and rudeness to teachers could all get you sent to the center. Students were totally isolated with their regular classwork and allowed out fortunch and to go to the restroom only during times when the other students were in class. But, they came back strong with a convincing win over Glynn Academy. The season was one of ups and downs as the Bucs seemed to lack the consistency needed to become a truly good team. The Bucs had just won 3 out of their last 4 games when the team was torn apart. The boys that stayed and played showed an incredible amount of character and desire in the homecoming game. I have nothing but admiration for this group, said Coach Watson. The Bucs began to get it together coming down the home stretch as they won 7 of their last 10 games. Their sub-region record was 4-2 and good enough to gain a second place finish behind Charlton Co. In the sub-region tournament, MCA romped over Frederica 64-50 and earned a trip to the region tournament in Douglas. This year will see the end of a brilliant career for Barry Pierce. He was outstanding this year averaging 22 points and 11 rebounds per game. Seniors Garland West, George Alston, Steve Sykes, and Randy Poppell will also leave behind some shoes that will be hard to fill. 88 89 Boys Girls M.C.A. Opponent M.C.A. This year's activities included something for everyone. The week began with Club Day on which all club members wore their club's emblem. An assembly for each Homecoming nominee to be introduced was held on Tuesday. Wednesday was 50's Day. Students and teachers came to school in leather jackets, poodle skirts, and greasy hair. On Thursday, another student-faculty basketball game was held in the gym, but this year an added attraction made the game a first. Female faculty members played two quarters and helped the men keep the record for beating the students four games in a row! The Student Council also held a wall-decorating contest for clubs. The Art Club was chosen the winner for best carrying out the theme of Just Once. 97 Homecoming Queen 1982 Miss Sherry Williamson Escorted by Ty Barrow During halftime of the boys' game Miss Sherry Williamson was crowned MCA's 1982 Homecoming Queen. Due to circumstances beyond their control. Buccaneer coaches were confronted with a small number of players, and some quick decision had to be made. Taking the floor with only five players, Coach Washington's girls made an admirable showing against Bryan County. But Coach Watson's five faithful Bucs came on strong and held the lead the entire game, winning the Homecoming game 68-60. Playing an outstanding game were Barry Pierce, George Alston, Vernon Banfield, Ken Edwards, and Steve Sykes. Congratulations, Bucs, for a fine showing!! 103 Remember . . . 1981-82 SONGS Endless Love Just the Two of Us For Your Eyes Only I Heard It Through the Grape Vine Give It To Me, Baby I Found Love on a Two-way Street Just Be My Lady One in a Million Step by Step Who's Crying Now Just Once Centerfold Private Eyes I Can't Go for That Elvira Anti-Christian Physical Open Arms You're Going to Lose a Heart Tonight Apache Why Do Fools Fall In Love? The class of '82 has mef much adversity, but, yes, we will survive. To go through a senior year at MCA is like going to a meeting with the Hell's Angels. If life is a barrel of fun, what is being a senior? After all we've been through, the class of '82 is still proud and true. These were the best and worst of times.
