YUM 3 Dedication The members of the annual staff feel that it is an honor to pay tribute to one who has become a genuine part of Mclntosh Academy. She has par- ticipated in the planning, fund-raising, and assem- bling of the BUCCANEER. She has displayed a vast amount of determination in keeping the stand- ards of our yearbook high. She has worked with us and has given us hope when things were dismal. With much affection, admiration and appreciation, we dedicate the 1977 BUCCANEER to our advisor, Mrs. Rebecca Wilson. The yearbook staff proudly presents the 1977 BUCCANEER to you with the theme Expressions. We feel the book expresses the most important aspects of the day-to-day experiences on the MCA campus. We realize that the students are a vital part of the school, and in this publication we have endeavored to create a memory that will always remain with you. In remembering this year at MCA, forget not the many people we have met or the wonderfully exciting times we have shared. We have tried to capture one year's activities in a book in which all will be proud. We believe we have accomplished this goal. Expressions of Learning Learning is what school is all about. It may involve looking for amoeba under the microscope, weaving a rug, creating a new fashion, learning to parallel park, or taking a difficult test. The father, in a final attempt to quiet his son, tore out a page of the magazine on which there was ci map of the world, and cut it into bits. Here is a puzzle for you, he said to his son. Try to put this map together. In a few moments the father was surprised to see the map per- fectly arranged. How did you do it so soon? he asked his son. Oh, that was simple, the boy replied, You see, on the other side was a picture of a man. I put the man together and the world was all right. f ff 'r'.- -H is Snow George Robinson Morris Brown College B.S. in Social Studies Social Studies ln a sense, this story illustrates the nature of social studies in American schools today, for social studies focuses on people, on the world, and on the relation- ships between the two. The social studies are those instructional courses, programs, and projects that are designed to assist students to understand, analyze, react to, and act upon the relationships of human beings to the world in which they live, to other human beings, and to themselves. General Math S we.-- Mathematics The Mclntosh County Academy Mathematics Department, after observing the broad range of abilities and interests in our students, feel that a double-tracked mathematics pro- gram is required. The first program should consist of practical or applied mathematics for those who will terminate their formal educa- tion at the high school level. The second program is aimed at the college-bound stu- dent. These students have a sequential course of study which would adequately prepare them for pursuit of a college degree. ',i Caroline B. At M.C.A. the pupil's purpose is best defined as to provide an introductory envi- ronment in art on the pupil's indi- vidual level. What Is an 8th Grader? lf you can imagine how a guinea pig feels in a maze, then you can understand how eighth graders feel when they begin a new phase of school life at M.C.A. We begin by playing treasure hunt the first day, having in our hands schedules for places and teachers we don't know how to find. Nevertheless, strong, youthful, and determined, lplus a little bit frighteneall, we begin our quest for a higher education. We are beginners. Thus far we have discovered some things that high school is all about. Yet we are still young discoverers. We want to be a part of everything happening, but we have found out that Y-Club, Beta Club, FHA, FFA, FBLA, and all A's are important for only grades 9-12. That makes us a bit envious. However, we look forward to the day when we too shall move forward to the coveted positions of the Big Folks on Campus. We are cute, creative, full of energy, and inhibited by upperclassmen who make us feel like their spoiled little sisters or brothers. We are the middle school members who want to express ourselves with cheers, songs, applause, drama, and excitement. We like some noise. We want P.E.l We want a library period. We want everything we don't have until we get it. We are people with prob- lems in first year algebra. We are frustrated by outlining and compositions. We still enioy spelling bees and weekly quizzes in history. We are fascinated by the story of life and ecol- ogy. We love life and want to live it fully. We are the restless ones who grow up too soon because next year we'll be a part of the In Crowd at M.C.A. What is an 8th grader? Why we are iust the youngest members of the M.C.A. family. 5 ,,. ,., , L.. ,T ,..x,-.-- -.t-..f,-v-u-pq--vw A an-we-. ' v 4 wwf-4 g..3.,yy,+,p.,g.g.,,.q,,,.,,..,. - .',:., . , . V , -. What is it like being a freshman? Being a freshman means giving up childish ways and becoming voung adults. Life offers us more and we proceed with caution to the trials and tribulations awaiting us at the door of adulthood. We begin to feel important. Now that we are older, we realize that school is a considerable portion of our life. lt means developing lasting friendships. It means giving something to each class - a ioke, a laugh, and even a smile. Each class we shall remember as we move on. Some older teens pick on us, but really we are one big family. All in all being a freshman is more than iust having a title. lt's more like . . . well, growing up. We freshmen have only one disadvantage - we will be saying good-bye to our senior friends. We will surely miss them. We can sum it up by saying that being a freshman is like having to get a haircut - one dreads having to do it, but one can always grow out of it. We have worked hard to keep good grades and our pride as fresh- men. We now have earned the title freshman, and we are proud of it. -In 'v lg' 1 w. 1 I .F v A Q 'G n '- . - Q' 1 , ,, te -xg. -vu ,. As Sophomores, we are the middle men land womenl of high school. We are past the struggle of finding ourselves. We have learned through many experiences, some good, some bad, how to cope with things in high school life. We have found our friends. We are struggling and learning together, trying to overcome the uncomplimentary stigma of the word sophomore, a wise fool. Although we have made it one more step up the ladder, we are still envious of the others because we don't have as many privileges, such as going to proms and ordering class rings. We are gaining more and more confidence in ourselves every day because we know that we are already halfway to the seemingly unreachable goal of graduation. Sometimes we think of ourselves as the useless class because we are not being babied as newcomers are, and we are not thought to be as good as the mighty Seniors. We have millions of ideas stored within us, but somehow we never seem to get a chance to put them to use. By the time we get to use our new ideas, we usually have already put them away into the childish corners of our minds. We do not apologize for what we are. Even though we are really confused sometimes, we have an understanding for life, and we believe in what we are doing. S is for Seventy-nine O is for our Originality. P is for our Pride. H is for our Honesty. O is for our Organization. M is for our Modesty. O is for our Outpouring of Wisdom. R is for our Royal Blood. E is for our Eloquence. ,v 1-R x ' Nr ' -.1 wr ' - , A ..,,, Y K .4 , M .AY l'n 3, A - I . , ' -' X-Aw , M, lg -,1In,:' ' A . fy'-'. '. sl,-' ,X .vqgvl X . X my- ., ,,' TN -.Jef ' 4 , , M' '- my 1. W HQ, aw c , , K What Is a junior? A Junior is an active, observant intellectual of some kind who has zest for living and a fantastic individualism which is sometimes hard to comprehend. The junior year is our special time, when for us things really happen. We have sat back for years and watched while others directed the Greatest Show on Earth - all high school affairs. Well, someone in authority finally has come to realize that we are capable, confident, and eager to direct the players in the drama of school life without too much coun- seling. We only wonder what took them so long to acknowledge our talents and potentiali- ties. You see, a iunior is a very responsible individual. We capably assist as aides and secre- taries. We have the energy to create and the maturity to plan for ourselves adventurous undertakings which will spark our intellect and amuse our fancy. Needless to say, the wis- dom that we gained during our sophomore year suddenly has meaning for us. We can clearly visualize why it's important to follow the rules of parallelism or outlining when com- posing. We can manipulate more accurately advanced mathematics because we have tucked away so very carefully all of the tricks about positives and negatives, and this makes cosigns and tangents so simple. The global sphere no longer seems so vast and frightening. lt suddenly shrank in world geography, and we are anxious to travel to its farthest regions in search of our Impossible Dreams. And, needless to say, three-fourths of us are madly in love with being in love. Why shouldn't we be? We are the most beautiful of the now generation on campus. We proudly walk the corridors in the glory of youth. Though our personalities are a mixture very much like a weather menagerie, we are women and men, not boys and girls. We are compassionate, helpful, daring, inconquera- ble, wary sometimes, but dedicated, fun-loving, and simply fantastic. There's nothing greater than a iunior - a rising iunior. .Q-.4 X L A, 1-v .MJ-i 4 . 4 ,9 f - . ,, -H .- .- Q. w ' -'1sfvQ.w,-mnwzw - --1,.:.1s54a.L'2-5.5.4, . x . , D. , 5 Q o ' . x-' I ., I- -...A vp, . if , -3 - 1 X 43. 1 v 1 Q .0 i r I Debbie Anderson Arlene Archer Mitchell Armstrong Kathy Bacon Sam Beecher Wendy Blankenship Kelvin Brown Edgar Bryant Thaddeus Bryant Veronica Bryant Brenda Butler James Butler Johnnie Mae Butler Rusty Clark Max Collins Joey Corlette gi: .8 5? .vw fm so fgm, ss uf fr . Seniors are people who act like actors or actresses who have just reached stardom. As a matter of fact, we are ready to begin our longest and toughest struggle, LIFE!!! Seniors are opportunists who are vain, superficial, aggressive, and even conceited. We are also fast-minded, finger-hanging, disco-dancing, heart-breaking, fast-action chasing, midnight-riding, flaming youth. lBut best of all we are modest.l We seniors realize that we have spent twelve years with a majority of the same people and know each other 'better than is possible without, in a very real way, loving them. The memories race through our heads and contrast from grapefruit-bitter to honey-sweet. We realize that in a few short months we will be scattered to many parts of the world, and the ever present memories will be all that remain with us. We laugh and try to shrug it off, but when we walk down M.C.A.'s halls for the last time, we will look back with a sadness that will never entirely fade away. All this comes into reali- zation in a blink of an eye, and with the next blink, one solemn but meaningful tear appears. f X-K ri-,' v 3. , ,9-Q, Yi Q26 ' -:I 9- , , Z Q . ,QM Q x 'f 4 ,fx xt . kfx.1..oL - 1 X 1. . .A . .'., ,,:.v.f,,. ., ., . We inform the student body and faculty as to what is happening on campus. We are the ones who take pictures, think of ideas, produce the news, and meet deadlines. Sometimes being on the ECHO staff means considerable hard work mixed with fun. The last few minutes of our deadlines are very hectic, but we feel that the final result is well worth the effort. B U C CANEER Staff The BUCCANEER staff at M.C.A. con- sists of a group of dedicated students who feel that it is their duty to publish an annual which holds many beautiful memories. Being a member of the BUCCANEER staff means becoming a salesman, creator, cam- paigner, Photographer, fund raiser, and even a writer. But most of all it is important for a BUCCANEER member to have pride, will power, devotion, and dedication needed to produce an exceptional year- book. E ,L F.F.A. The Future Farmers of America are a group of young men working toward the creation of ideas that will promote the upkeeping of the general area. We beautify our campus by planting shrubbery and tending to the campus' gen- eral condition. We partici- pate in the county's fair and the Fall Festival at school. We also study different aspects of forestry. Mr. Washington is our advisor. F.H.A. We, the Future Home- makers of America, are a group of individuals who are preparing to be better homemakers. We entertain with fashion shows and exhibits at the county's exchange fair in Brunswick. We work to learn skills in the areas of sewing and food preparation. We involve ourselves socially with every one and in every aspect of our school and community. Ms. Jean Nor- man and Mrs. Bessie Thomas are our advisors. Teach er- Office Aides We are a group of stu- dents who give our aide to the administrative staff and faculty. We lend a helping hand to all per- sons, and we help keep our teachers from becoming nervous wrecks during many stressing days. Beta Club We members of the Beta Club promote the ideals of honesty, service, and lead- ership. We reward achieve- ment by assisting individu- als in continuing their edu- cation through the Marga- ret Williams Scholarship Fund. We also participate in school activities. Our organization is known as the honor society and one must have a B average to join. Mrs. Shirley Gale is our advisor. f Drama Club We, the Drama Club, are the future actors and actresses of the generation to come. We are the future winners of the Grammy awards and members of the Hall of Fame. We raised money by selling candy apples at the Fall Fes- tival. We work hard developing the correct props and stage settings for plays, as well as perform for the school and community. Mrs. Maggie Blackshear is our advisor. 'hm l Musical Society M.C.A.'s Musical Soci- ety is the place to be. It is composed of students who work hard with voice les- sons, reading notes, breath control, and singing. Some- times we are serious, get- ting ready for school con- certs, and at other times we are iust jamming with Mr. Allen Stripling. Industrial Arts Industrial Arts members are the handy men. We fix those broken items that need to be mended such as chairs, desks, and tables. We make blue prints and then build many gunracks, chests, tables and other useful items. We become creative through the help ot Mr. Adolphus Williams and Mr. William Heck. S.A.G.E. We in SAGE are the future.teachers of tomor- row. We encourage stu- dents to ioin our club and to consider teaching as a pro- fession. I l i To the readers of the l 97 7 BUCCANEER: It has been ,a pleasure being the editor af the 1977 BUCCANEER in spite of all the hard work, anxiety, and frustration. i For the first time ever, our yearbook has a theme, Expressions, The definition of expression is a representation of meaning, sentiment, or feeling. J l feel this edition of the BUCCANEER incorporates all of these. ' V An immense feeling of gratitude comes from me for all those who had a part in pro- ducing this yearbook. The group of people I am most grateful to are the members of the staff. Without their determination and hard work this yearbook would not have been pos- sible. Many students and teachers have been helpful throughout the year in the produc- tion of this book. I am most appreciative of their help. I would also like to thank Mr. Jack Orman for his help with the photography. Mrs. Wilson deserves special thanks for instill- ing drive and determination in the staff and for putting up with the staff and me. l hope you willtenioy reliving the many expressions of M.C.A..in the 1977 BUCCA- NEER. s ' Sincerely, my pW7?yjf5MEf7j fi 2f5Cc21I7Qi5s1 1? if M f35jf5'5WQw6' qflivioyg Skwyjw MQW W if M bi, DQffKf WL W ff QJ Lf?
