Page 6 text:

Foreword The annals of history record the lives of the greatest, most humanitarian men and women of all ages. Volumes extol the virtues of those who crusaded a cause, and who in their fight to right a wrong” sacrificed their happiness, their fortunes, and their lives. No anthology could be complete without due honor being paid toa few of the ALL-TIME GREATS. There were Susan B. Anthony, Booker T. Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington Carver, Helen Keller, Carrie Nation, ad infinitum. What made these people so different from the average person? Were they so possessed with acore of over-powering zeal that gnawed insatiably upon them until they could find no inner peace? Did they, in their devotion to a cause, gaze almost intothe brink of insanity because of their consuming zealousness? No! The answer isso simple, it is almost startling: EACH ONE POSSESSED AN ABUNDANCE OF LOVE FOR HIS FELLOWMAN THAT TRANSCENDED RACE, COLOR, RELIGION, AND LOCALITY. This love was sufficient enough that they gave their sacrifices gladly so that those-who-were-to-be- born could have a happier, more peaceable, more meaningful life. Thomas Paine delcared, These are the times that try men's souls. The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods, and it would be strange, indeed, if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated. How apropos, even for today. Riots, confusion, avaricious groups who seek everything and are willing to give nothing in return, peddlers of soul-damaging drugs, those who interpret LICENSE as FREEDOM - all these eat away at the very foundation of American society. Yet the strong, silent force of love still survives and bravely fights to hold high all that which is decent and moral. A hard-working mother, wearing cheap work dresses, skimps and saves; feeds her family on economical foods; and seldom knows respite from toils and hardships just so her children can have a college education. The dedicated teacher restricts life to school, its endless piles of papers, and instills hopefully, with humble prayers, the honorable American way of life. The somber nuns with their deeds of mercy and their peaceful lives of Christian denial proclaim their love for God and humanity; and the weary doctor sits patiently all night long by the bedside of a sick one, hopefully looking for an optimistic change toward recovery. It is with a privileged sense of pride that this yearbook salutes these noble average Americans who seek through exemplary lives to give a heritage to the future generations, who keep the peace in business and in schools, who preserve domestic tranquillity, even at the cost of personal insult and injury. Perhaps it is in the words of Longfellow that the average American embodies his philosophy: The lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints in the sands of time.
