1971 BUCCANEER REBECCA HOLT, EDITOR FRANK WILLIAMS, ASSISTANT EDITOR MRS. SHIRLEY GALE, ADVISOR McIntosh County Academy Darien, Georgia Foreword The annals of history record the lives of the greatest, most humanitarian men and women of all ages. Volumes extol the virtues of those who crusaded a cause, and who in their fight to right a wrong” sacrificed their happiness, their fortunes, and their lives. No anthology could be complete without due honor being paid toa few of the ALL-TIME GREATS. There were Susan B. Anthony, Booker T. Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington Carver, Helen Keller, Carrie Nation, ad infinitum. What made these people so different from the average person? Were they so possessed with acore of over-powering zeal that gnawed insatiably upon them until they could find no inner peace? Did they, in their devotion to a cause, gaze almost intothe brink of insanity because of their consuming zealousness? No! The answer isso simple, it is almost startling: EACH ONE POSSESSED AN ABUNDANCE OF LOVE FOR HIS FELLOWMAN THAT TRANSCENDED RACE, COLOR, RELIGION, AND LOCALITY. This love was sufficient enough that they gave their sacrifices gladly so that those-who-were-to-be- born could have a happier, more peaceable, more meaningful life. Thomas Paine delcared, These are the times that try men's souls. The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods, and it would be strange, indeed, if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated. How apropos, even for today. Riots, confusion, avaricious groups who seek everything and are willing to give nothing in return, peddlers of soul-damaging drugs, those who interpret LICENSE as FREEDOM - all these eat away at the very foundation of American society. Yet the strong, silent force of love still survives and bravely fights to hold high all that which is decent and moral. A hard-working mother, wearing cheap work dresses, skimps and saves; feeds her family on economical foods; and seldom knows respite from toils and hardships just so her children can have a college education. The dedicated teacher restricts life to school, its endless piles of papers, and instills hopefully, with humble prayers, the honorable American way of life. The somber nuns with their deeds of mercy and their peaceful lives of Christian denial proclaim their love for God and humanity; and the weary doctor sits patiently all night long by the bedside of a sick one, hopefully looking for an optimistic change toward recovery. It is with a privileged sense of pride that this yearbook salutes these noble average Americans who seek through exemplary lives to give a heritage to the future generations, who keep the peace in business and in schools, who preserve domestic tranquillity, even at the cost of personal insult and injury. Perhaps it is in the words of Longfellow that the average American embodies his philosophy: The lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints in the sands of time. The Experiences of Yesterday Light the Path of Today, And the Shadows of These Are 4 the Reflections of Tomorrow's Dreams. 5 Ashantilly Thomas Spalding, the great-grandson of JohnMorh McIntosh, resided on Sapelo Island, but also owned property on the main- land. He designed a winter residence near Darien, which he called Ashantilly after the Barony of Ashantilly in Scotland to which his father had been heir. In 1937 the interior of the house was destroyed by fire with only the foundation and tabby walls left firm. Ashantilly is now owned by the Haynes family and has been beautifully restored and furnished by them. The Buccaneer staff extends its sincere gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Haynes and to the Misses Ann Lee and Frances Haynes for so graciously allowing the use of their lovely place and for permitting the intrusion upon their privacy. Dedication Because he is our friend- Because he has guided us enthusiastically - and has shown us what strength of character really means - Because he has worked untiringly for the whole school program - For his efforts, not only in education, but in the civic and church life of the community- Because he has shown constant devotion to solving the seemingly insurmountable problems of growth and 4 transition - It is with grateful recognition of his time, service, and self that the 1971 Buccaneer is dedicated with affection and appreciation to Mr. Huff. 8 McINTOSH COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. Chatham Jones Mr. Proctor Can Mr. Sam Bluestein Mr. Jimmy Folker CHAIRMAN Mr. Jack Johnston VISITING TEACHER: Mrs. Sue Schmfdt 12 SECRETARY FOR BOARD OF EDUCATION: Mrs. Edna Pitts 14 MATH: Mr. Luther Byrd, Mrs. Caroline Green, Miss Mary Lee Francis MUSIC: Mrs. Frances Taylor GUIDANCE COUNSELOR: Mr. Jake Singleton 17 LIBRARIANS: Mrs. Shirley Gale, Mrs. Lorraine Byrd 19 CURRICULUM DIRECTOR: Mr. Vann Sikes SEVENTH GRADE: Mrs. Sadie Pleasant, Mrs. Harriet Pickens, Mrs. Mada Heins, Mr. Joseph Washington, Mrs. Anne Whorton EIGHTH GRADE: Mr. Samuel Grant, Mr. Dan Fenn, Mrs. Billie Holt, Mrs. Janice Watkins, Mrs. Rosalind Evans 20 VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE: Mr. George Hall DRIVER TRAINING: Mr. Frank Thomas 21 PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Mr. Joseph Washington, Mr. James Bonds, Mr. Frank Thomas William Jean PRESIDENT: Jean Porter VICE PRESIDENT: John Henry Baker SECRETARY: Margie Wallace TREASURER: LeVanuel Goethe REPORTER: Jerry Lane BUSINESS MANAGER: Roosevelt Ferguson Rebecca MILTON PEFRY ALEXANDER Spanish Club 1,2; Track 3,4 JOHN WILLIAM ALFORD, JR. As honeycomb panel cores. Laminated to aluminum “skins”. The panels form the enclosing wall of the 120- foot-wide tower base. And the huge hinged gates which open and envelop the rocket during servicing. Why paper honeycomb? Because it’s incredibly strong. And incredibly light. The giant gates swing easy. And precious pounds are saved in the 32-story structure whose weight can flatten the railroad wheels below when they are not in motion. Union Camp honeycomb has hundreds of other uses— in both commercial and residential con- struction. Everything from floors to walls and to roofs. Even the sky isn’t the limit. The paper for Union Camp’s Honeycomb is manufactured at the huge Savannah Complex, the world’s largest pulp-to-container plant. Union O’QUINN’S COLONIAL MOBILE HOMES 4027 Norwich Street Ext.
