LIBRARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA GIFT OF DIVISION OF EXTENSION Comments on 1947 Publications Contests ANNUALS Judges Professor E. W, Withers The Journalism Foundation washington-Lee University Lexington, Virginia Group III. McChalva . Mclntire High School, Charlottesville. In ‘Group III McChalva tends to overwhelm all others by its size and its thorough coverage. It is ambitious, but I believe its abilities Justify its ambition. Tiie cover is a plain, serviceable, and unusually handsome one; the title page is not too happy a combination of hand-lettering and type; the two- page drawing of the school makes an attractive layout. Faculty pages are poorly trimmed and on one the cuts are unevenly arranged. The table of contents comes at an unusual place, it seems to me. Captions would have aided the page of senior snapshots which, with the senior-play page, is a good idea. Good but uninspired coverage is given to clubs ana activities by picture and copy. Congratulations on your page of A Year ' s Achieve- ments. I believe no other annual publishes this same information. Some pictures are too inl’arior to the general average of those in the book to have been included, but this may have been due to bad engravings. I like the wide variation of type faces nd sizes in the advertising section. An excellent and effective yearbook which somehow seems as if it should have been a little better than it is. EUBRAKyOFVD KC’ ...oKD.VA ALVA Josephine Campbell William Downer Introduction We have just passed through a year in which our country was changing from the strict regulation of war time to post- war peacetime. The leaders of the world have been trying to make the peace secure and long lasting foi future genera- tions. Several “post-war” changes have been seen in our schools. The boys who left us to go to fight have come back to finish school, and go to college. We sent delegates to the first State Student Cooperative Association convention since the war. We entered the literary contests, track meets, the District Basketball Tournament, and the Music Festiva 1 We, of the staff, are presenting you these pages in hopes that they will help you to recall old friends, and relive the old scenes at Mclntire. Dedication We, the Senior Class of 1947, feel that it is a privilege to dedicate this, the fifth McChalva, to Miss Cora Hughes Anderson, the first grade teacher. Our primary teachers were the people who started us off on the road of education. We wish to express our appre- ciation to these teachers for starting us off, and maybe giving us a little push when we were slow. Faculty Robert W. Allen Principal, Math Daisy B. Since this was our first voyage we were very eager to learn something about our destination, but the officers would tell us only that we would gain exactly what u ' e put into it. Most of us were eager to find out how long our journey would 4 ake and our cap- tain told us it would take four years, or more if ire didn’t work hard to become good sail- ors. We were a large crew and we all had great ambitions, but the captain told us of the many barriers and informed us that the seas might be very rough so we all settled down and worked to help make one voyage run smoothly. We took up our anchor and set sail on seas that were just a little rougher. By now most of us were accustomed to this sea of knowledge , but twelve of our little sailors had become seasick so we left tin on behind. We were not discouraged because while at anchor we managed to gain several new sailors and we were all busy helping them to become accustomed to boat life. Our ship, being a modern ship, was equipped with all kinds of athletic equipment and we also had a huge library. So quite a few of our sailors went out for basketball, baseball, and boxing, while others of the quieter nature worked with prose and poetry reading, public speaking and debating. And so our second voyage was happily ended. In September 1945 we again took up our anchor and by now we felt that we were old, experienced sailors. We worked hard to keep our boat in good condition. On this voyage we spent even more rime in the library and with our sports. In Hie course of this voyage we dropped anchor at Charlottesville and engaged a truck full of nay. Then we all climbed aboard and road merrily to “Sugar Hollow” where we spent an ev toyable evening. At last we had finished our i hird voyage and wi f hout any shipwrecks. We began our fourth voyage sadly for we realized that this would be the last time that we would sail with many of our crew. We had left some of our crew behind us. One of them had entered the sea of matrimony. On this voyage we had many new things to think about. First we decided to g o dramatic so we aU went to work and produced a play called “Strictly Formal”. Next we donned our formal attire and gave a formal dance. As usual many of our crew were busy with prose and poetry reading, debating and public speak- ing. Others were practicing basketball, baseball, and all the other sports and worrying whether the red team or the ‘due team would win. This time many of the crew attended a music festival. At last we have finished our course and now we will sail on new uncharted seas. We look ahead to new and untried waters for “TONIGHT WE SAIL, WHERE SHALL WE ANCHOR?” — Mary Anne Douglass. 16 The McChalva Senior Class Will We, the Senior Class of Mclntire High School, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred forty-seven, being of sound body and supposedly sound mincl do oi da in, establish, and declare this to be our last will and testament, revoking all other wills made by us at any time previously.
