SS MCI ER EY FFG- 78' J 4 -, ,Q 45- I CSS MCINERNEK homeported in Mayport, Florida, is the lead production ship of the Oliver Hazard Perry Class of guided ssile frigates. This is the Navy 's largest class of destroyer-type ships built since World War 11. MC1NERNEY's mission is to provide :Ili-threat protection for military and merchant shipping, amphibious task forces and underway replenishment groups. -VICINERNE Y was commissioned on 15 December 1979, and initially served as the Navy 's test platform for the LAMPS MK Helicopter until 1981. .VIC1NERNEYTs deployments include support for the Multi-National Force in Beirut in November 1982, the Middle East in midst of the Iranflraq Tanker War in October 1984, the Mediterranean Sea in August 1988, the North Atlantic where she zducted Anti-Submarine Warfare above the Arctic Circle in tlze spring of 1989, the Middle East for Operation Desert Storm in ' 'zuarjv 1991, the Mediterranean Sea and Adriatic Sea in October 1992 where she conducted Maritime Interception Operations with 'ltinationalforcesx From September to October 1993, MCINERNE Y conducted Counter-Drug Operations in the Caribbean Sea to force United Nation sanctions in .support of Operation Support Democracy. In April and May 1994 during preparations for her nmer 1994 UNI TA S deployment, MC1NERNEYflexed her Combat Systems muscles in Agile Providen a multi-force exercise ojj' the ist ofAN'orth Carolina and performed missile and tolpedo exercises in the Caribbean Sea. In July 1994 MCINERNE Y embarked on -'1 TA S. a multinational deployment conducting advanced tactical exercises primarilv with South American Countries. Following 'ITA S. .VICINERNE Y conducted operations in the Nortl1 Atlantic Ocean in support of Operation Strong Resolve in February 1995. Most recently the MCINERNE Y was deployed from I2 April to 29 September 1996 as the US representative to NATO 's nding Naval Forces Atlantic f STA NA VFORLANTQ. This squadron was responsible to the NA TO commanders as a ready naval asset 'he Atlantic should operations require a naval force. MCINERNE Y contributed to the operations in the Adriatic Sea between Italy i the former Yugoslavia. There the MC1NliRNli YK' mission was to enforce the UN sanctions by identifying all shipping entering the riatic and ensure that they were not carrying any contraband. May of 96, MCINERNE Y completed that task and returned to forming duties in the traditional role ofa ready naval force for NA TO until being relieved in September. VlClNIils'NliY 's advanced systems and technology combined with a highly .skilled crew and professional leaders set her apart one ofthe most capable ships in the fleet.
