A modern Athena, panoplied for war Against ignorance, blind prejudice. More, A general, too, with youth's army following close For we have learned to know the right, we boast, And she has taught us. She has taught from Life, as well as books, The lessons from Life we more often took. The future holds things which are strange to us yet But in that future, pray God we don't forget, She nmaden us. The philosophy which I am about to describe is one which is not easily attained, yet if attained should prove very self-satisfying. This way of life is t way of self-reliance, and the author I am referring to is Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson says, and this is the basis for his essay, HTO believe in your own thoughts, To believe what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men.H Now exactly what does this statement mean? Most of us go thru life having new ideas yet pushing them aside because we think we have not the potential to think up anything novel or worthwhile. We discard them and later see the same ideas used by others with success. Then we stop and berate ourselfves but it is too late. To be truly self-reliant, when that inner light flashes with a new idea, it is neccessary to believe and express it. Again I turn to Emerson, who says, nFor a man to truly have respect for himself, nothing should be sacred but his inner nature,N even at the risk of being a non-conformist. History has shown us that each decade has produced leaders by the scores, and the prime element for leadership is utter self reliance. This is where our generation seems to be failing, we have a definite lack of men strong within themselves and capable of holding public office. In order to develop leaders on a national scale, it is necessary to instill in our youth, faith 1n'themselves and their ideals. Our smaller commu- nities are the training ground for future leaders. The people in our co munities can easily assist in this development by showing complete faith in the young people of today. Abraham Lincoln is A prime example of a man who practiced self- reliance. Though half the nation opposed freeing the slaves, L1ncoln's ideals prevailed and he signed the Emancipation Proclama- tion. we greatly need men such as Lincoln today, to lead our country out of peril. what leads men to fame? In exceptional cases, fame is thrust upon an individual, but in most cases the famed one has had to thrust himself up and over the barriers of the commonplace. A flash of light, an inspiration - not tossed aside with the timeworn words, nProbably someone else has already thought it out and if they haven't it won't work,n but seized upon, enlarged and given to the world. The theories behind nuclear fission were once merely thoughts in the brains of several scientists. These men might have dis- regarded their thoughts as silly and tossed them aside, but they d1dn't. They discussed the ideas, worked them out and they resulted in the opening of our atomic era. a v 1 .f il , .s' .Fifi 1:1 ff 4 .,.g.. fi. ij. At our first class meeting at our first week of school we elected the following officers, President--Gayle Lang, Vice-- President--Dorothy Dube, Secretary--Carolyn Choate, Treasurer-- Joan white, Student Council Members--Jerolyn Newell, and Leonard Bowen. We then initiated the shy and dubious Freshman on September 13, 1952 making them parade down the street with their gala effects but we softened them with a warm reception to McIA to become offici al members along with us. For activities we had another dance during the first half, of the school year and we took part in the speaking contest in which we fared quite well, having a member of our class winning and comming in third with the other schools. In basketball, we had two girls from our class that were on first team and for the boys we had one on the first team. We put on a play called UOh Babyu in which we were in com- petition with the other classes for the One Act Play Contest. We came in last but it was fun anyway. Outside the League, we posted victories over Lishon Twice and Orleans once. We split our two round robin games defeating Newbury at Monroe and losing to Bethlehem at woodsville. Highlighting our season were two victories over Trade and Lishon and single victories over Concord, Orleans, and keacham. 'The outstanding game from our viewpoint was the victory at the end of the season over Concord at Concord while the best game from the basketball viewpoint was our victory over Trade at St. Johnsbury. Ron Crowe led all scorers with 255 points edging out Huck Aiken by one point. These two both return next year to resume their out- standing careers. Ken Emery had the highest game average, 17.3 in lh contests. Russ Moore, Gil Theroux, John Pratt and Phil Blanchard all did excellent jobs. Russ Moore, playing his second year was Il5h highest scorer and shows great promise in the next two years. Gil Theroux was the Sth highest scorer and did excellent rebound work on the defensive backboard. Gil and Russ also kept the opposition off balance with their deadly outside set shots. Huck Aiken had the highest foul shooting percentage, 59 out of 99 for a 6035 mark. Gil Theroux and Ken Emery are graduating starters while Earry Story and John Pratt in particular who did excellent relief work also graduate. ' Iiiliii-uh mlul , The star of our team didn't play a game although he made sev- eral appearances on the floor and worked harder than any of the rest of us. We thank Mr. Rasines who did a wonderful job coaching us and wish him every success possible. Next years team will have Ron, Huck and Russ, three fine starters back along with Phil Blanchard, and outstanding performer as a Freshman. The team's main handicap will be a serious lack of height, however they should do well. Kenneth Emery '52 I v X 1 , 1 N , 1 ' N 1 I -M., gigilwx x-M 4.x N J 'I:l, ' .T ' .. Three years are necessary to keep the cup. Captains Schilling and Hammond, with their team-mate Ramona Dickinson made up the strongest defense in the League. I was chosen as captain. we decided on Blue Cord- uroy jumpers with ballerina skirts which were lined with ll ye ow satin, yellow long sleeve blouses, and Hlittle boyn hats with yellow satin 1 v sors. we earned money by a turkey raffle and food sale. We gave Mrs. Arthur Jones the task of making the suits. She did a won- derful job tool we decided on every free activity period for practices. Valorie Sicard helped us with our cheers and constructed new ones. We had a wonderful time but this couldn't have been achieved if we hadn't cooperated. we really spurred the girls team to victor a d y n scream- ed our lungs out for the boys who did a wonderful job, tool On behalf of th e squard, I wish to thank Valerie, Mr. Jones, th e classes, teachers and other people who helped us before and during the games. Now for myself, I want to thank the cheerleaders for their co- operation, their, willingness to dig right in and cheer, mostly be- cause they chose me as captain. I had a wonderful time and I h cpe they enjoyed it as much as I did. Best of luck to them next year. Lena Sheppard '52 DAN .t,m: .., Ln. 'wuH'n.li'r':.v 'mlhirm-l.llllAl1 ' this .-554 t f TL! The guide turned, and asked with a smile, NI have a story to tell, wouldst you hear?N The scenery-gorged tourists assented. His timeless words are recorded here. The temple stood in the shadow Of time, and lack of sun. The gamboling, prancing figures Stood motionless, save for one. Lol The marble lips were moving! Hark! The words fell crystal clear! Half sob, half impassioned pleading, NAwake1 My sisters dearln The silent marble moved not, The statues stood cold and still, And an evening breeze tip-toed softly, From the brow of an ancient hill. HCry not,n it caressingly whispered NYour sisters cannot hear.H And marble tears, on a marble face, Glistened bright and clear. nwhy n0t,H sweet w1hd?u the statue asked. NWhy can't they dance with me?H NOh, listen,U answered the zephyr, NI will explain. You see, Long ago, in Hellenic glory, when the seven sisters and thou, Posed for the sculptured beauty, which you are part of now, Thy heart was free and youthful, Thy life was free and gay, But,nthe breeze's voice fell lower, Thy sisters were not that way. Courtesans, proud, with beauty vain, They posed, and each one thought, 'My beauty is such that in all of time N0 equal will be sought?' eD'lf'lf'D'l. And so, dear marble princess, Cry not for their company Thy unselfish heart is still living while theirs are stone, you see.n The guide's voice paused, and lowered, He smiled at the listening throng, nThey say that still in the evenings, The breeze sings the self-same song. Of unselfish love and beauty Of an ancient heart, good and true, In which there was no vanity will future winds speak so, of you?N Valorie Sicard '52 NMcIndoes Academyu Thenals an Academy in Mclndoe Falls, In the Academy, are four classes in all. In the Senior class, are kids of all sorts, The Junior class is well up in sports: The Sophomore class is sure full of fun, Of course there is no fooling until work is done The Freshman class is small and wild with plenty of fooling from every child. Next year we'1l see a lot of new faces Joining the school that is sure going places. The school is small, the pupils are few, But I'll always love Mclndoes, won't you. He makes me sick, anyway. He's one of the kind of boys that are so tired all the time and he just about drags him- self around. He has one of those darn Jeeps that aren't worth get- ting into to drive. Oh well some people are just naturally dumb, anyway and another one I think is just plain, right down stupid-- well that's Reggie Hately. He wears goggles-I mean glasses and he's so small that when he's playing basketball and running around he looks just like a potato bug. And besides that he's always making some kind of noise that drives me crazy and I feel like pounding him up. And that darned Ronnie Crowe-the girls like him and I'1l have to admit he's nice looking and everything, but Gee! he makes me mad, he studies to much and he's too smart for me. Another one I simply can't stand is Hucky Aiken-some call him Jr. and some call him Oscar but his real name is Leonard. He's a darn good basketball player and he's popular, too. Especially with the girls, but therehs one thing about him-he isn't very smart-Oh! he can fix a car, in fact he knows alot about cars, but well-anyway-he makes me mad. Let's see now there's another one too. His name is Dickie Strew. He's fairly smart in school, but he talks a lot. Well, as I said before I don't talk about people but Charlie Goss still thinks I do. That is what the people of today are complaining aboutzreYou really can't blame them. Our boys are being killed in Korea like flies, while the pol- iticans in our own country sit back relaxed, wondering where they can invest the mighty dollar, so it will yield the biggest dividends. The old folks used to say that money was the root of all evil. I do believe it is playing its own part in todays crisis. Now don't think that I am putting all the fault on the American government. You and I have changed with the times. when we want to do our laundry we just step into the laundry room, and in a very short time have our washing completed, washed by an automatic washing machine, dried by an automatic clothes dryer, and ironed on a mangle. we enter our kitchen with the task completed for the exception of the mending which doesn't take long on an elec- tric sewing machine. The same task would have taken at least three days for Gramma to complete and just think of her acking back, while sho scrubbed for hours on a scrub board. Also her many trips from the stove to the ironing board carrying sad iron Cas far as I am con- cerned I would be sad rather than the 1rons.D Now it is lunch time, with a flip of a button, your fire is li- ghted without the need of paper, matches, and kindling wood. Before you have time to get your food from the refrigerator the tea kettle is boiling, before Grandmother would have had time to descend the cellar stairs, to get her food from the cupboard in the cellar, where the meat, milk and parisables were kept because that was the only cool spot in the house Kand at the best fresh meat could only be kept one day.J By the time Gramma would have ascended the stairs with her arms loaded land perhaps in her climb lost part of her food down the cellar stairsl our dinner is nearly prepared, and cooked, thanks to the help of the pressure cooker and the pleasure of having a cool kitchen. After dinner, the left over food is put in covered dishes and stored in the refrigerator, to be used ln a salad or dressed up in some fancy dish with a new fandangled name. From now on it is easy, the table is cleared in a Jiffy, the dishes rinsed and put in the automatic dishwasher and forgotten. Just think of Gramma with her endless trips to the cellar bottom, to put her food away, the dish pans and the tedious job of dish washing, Cwonder if Gramm's hands aren't dissolved in all the water.D By this time we have put the finishing touches to the house and taken a shower and dressed. All we have to do is hop into an automobile to go to see Aunt Jennie Cpoor Gramma is just dragging the old wash tub in for a bath.J Yes, good old Dobbin to is a thing of the past. I have heard Gramma tell about taking a dish of oats to the pasture, thinking that if Dobbin had a taste of oats she might agree to have the halter put on her. Perhaps after a hour of teasing and coaxing and when Dobbin had the last bite of oats from the dish, she decides not to be haltered 'DfD!D'D1DHD'D'D2.DrD1D'D'D'JaD:InMJrD'Dul4:.DdkihD'l.mL'UD'V2MiWWwWUVUbWlwwzDzL',L1il - I1-D-D'D D D'D'D D D D D D D'D D D D D D D D D v D ,i1nm1.1 1342543 ' 1 Y' v- . 122224 'G 'G 'G 'fl 4 'G 'G 'C 4 4 -4 'G 'S 'SSS 'S 'S Q il :Q 4.2! 4.'!'!'l'l'ltiL'9. By this time we have been to Aunt Jenn1e's and are back. Talk about automobile troubles, they use to have Dobbin trouble! Gone also are the things in life we want most these things are courtesies. The young man of today drives into the yard, honks his horn loudly while his girl friend puts on her own coat, goes running down the walk opens the door for herself and they are off. Think of all the conveniences that we have living in this day and age, and the few conveniences Gramma had but she never complained We are still seeking modern equipment to make the task at hand eas- ier. Also seeking higher wages for doing as little work as possible. True to the American government and countries abroad wanting more than they have, getting it by hook or by crook, rather that enjoying what they have now and making the best of it. with no thought where the money is coming from to meet expenses. To much credit is worse than not enough. And we will be on the spot until we learn to live in a bracket that is equivalent to our income and the same applies to the American government. We would rather be living in Gramma's day when the boy came to the front door and knocked, waiting patiently to be invited in. It wouldn't matter so much to us if we had only Dobbin for transportat- ion as long as we were not taken for granted. Be aware gentlemen, when you go calling on your best glrl, remember some of the courtesies of the good old days. If only the things of the past that meant so much to us and the conveniences of the present could be combined, what a glorious place this earth would betx Irene MacDonald 'EL NTHE NIGHT BEFORE FINALSN Twas the night before finals, And all through the room, The papers were scattered we thought we were doomed. we were studying hard as any one could see, when all of a sudden someone hollered to me. nCome quick Jane, there's not a minute to lose, Come quick, for we all have very bad news!
