The Report of A Psychlatrlst The members of the class of 1956 have been very much mterested in psychology many of them havlng taken profound courses ln such awe rnsplring phases of the subject as psychoanal ysis and psychlatry Naturally they got all wrought up about their represslons and complexes defense mechanlsms and ratlonallzations When the world renowned psych1atrist Professor Abdullah Freudson Brillmg came to town and opened a consultlng room for the mentally unfit and the 1ntel1ectually unsettled all these earnest students rushed to see him Now don't misunderstand me I am not imply1ng that they were unf1t unsettled or un anythlng They all went to be psychoanalyzed Of course no one ever found out what the Professor told them but lt was generally reported that they were most anxlous to learn 1n what field of endeavor they would be most successful a very natural anxiety And now comes the excitlng part of my story Last n1ght I too had occasion to enter Professor Abdullah Freudson Br1ll1ng s offlce No not because of any mental weakness merely to collect the rent My father owns the bu1ld1ng And what do you think? You don t do you? Well I ll tell you The Professor wasn't 1n and to k1ll the time I read the magazmes on the table 1n the waxting room You know the sort of magazines you f1nd 1n a doctor's off1ce Well the Professor's magaz mes were even more Afterl d read MODERN PRISCILLA for December 1910 LITERARY DIGEST for Iune 1927 around for another lot of new snappy llterature All I could frnd was a black covered notebook at the very bottom of the p1le It was filled w1th closely typed notes Iust as I was about to close it I saw to my amazement the names of my classmates I looked again and dlscovered that those notes were the Professor's pr1vate and genuine opinlons of those who had consulted him I confess it without shame I read that notebook I determined that my friends should not be mrsled I would f1nd out what the Professor really thought they would become And what I found out! I copled it down so I'd not forget Have no fear that what I'm telling you is incorrect It s exactly what the famous psychia trist wrote about the members of the Senlor class all of whom, evidently consulted him Mable is a charming type Domestic and capable but w1th a slight inferiority complex due to the unfortunate fact that once she received only second prize in an international bread baking contest In a couple weeks she will be the happy w1fe of a prominent farmer with the nicest home and nicest meals in the country In addltion to that she will be a lecturer on homemaking the kind who tell people over the back fence how to bu1ld a front porch out of packing boxes and how to feed ten people seven days on twenty three cents apiece She will undoubtedly grow fat as the result of eating her own cooking but she will always be cheerful and a model house keeper Her husband will probably become bored and elope with a cashier in a tea shop, but I cannot be sure I have not psychoanalyzed him as yet LouAnn belongs to the great body of people who have a superiority complex Evidently someone, when she was very young praised her to excess for something she did and she has never recovered It gave her an ingrowing personality Her delight and skill in getting others to work while she watches and her ability to answer all questions sometimes correctly to say nothing of the snappy and forceful manner in which she orders other people around point to but one calling that of a school teacher Fifty years from now, gray haired perhaps and a trifle wrinkled but young at heart and still going strong she will be found in our school bossing not only her own people but everybody on her floor Kathryn is one of the most mterestlng cases of the many I have studied, possessing psychic power to a remarkable degree This is shown clearly by her vague, indefinite manner. She has a low visibility and a high mind, rn tune w1th the mfinite and on familiar terms with the spirit - I I I D l I I . . I 0 I ' ' ' ' . , ' so. ' 2 . : THE ETUDE for February, 19147 and GRANDMNS HOME COMPANION for April, 189 op 1 looked world In the years to come she will ach1eve world fame as a surgical nurse and her operatlons will be attended by all the best nurses and doctors 1n the world and enough others to make them as crowded as a rush hour subway Pay is a strange case troubled by a recurrent dream rn whlch she 15 forever in the mlddle of a network of train tracks, with trams coming at her from both sides She told me she thought her dream meant that she should get up 1n the a1r I have a strong feeling she w1ll become an arrline hostess on one of the leadlng airlmes and see the world at no expense Her favorite saying no doubt will be fasten your safety belts please She will continue ln that profes sion until she can no longer chmb the plane steps with her cane Arlin 1S a very ordinary case having no outstand1ng characteristics He is fond of farmlng Since rnfancy he rode on the tractor with his father He has had some trouble hearing due to the fact that a dirt storm came up quickly one day when he was plowing, labout slxteen years agoj , and the dirt filtered so far into h1s ears he never could get it out Withln a year he will be running h1s own farm, and have two or three tractors ready to go so he won't have to waste any dayl1ght hours by stopping to fill the tractor he's using Richard has an athletlc body and a lethargic mind the patient type He l1keS to sit and watch things fespecially T V J H1s calm disposltron, combined with his 1ngra1ned inertness, make him the ideal type for a sports promoter He 1S deeply interested in athletics but plays for pinochle himself He cannot be manager of a ball team or a boxer as that would requlre too much moving about He w1ll run a store He w1ll bu1ld a house r1ght across the street from lt so he can sit back in his easy chair and watch h1s faithful clerks bring in the money that will someday make him rich enough to retire Bertil is not a modern type He is perservering not easily discouraged and never gives up He will find it hard to fit into the life of today but one great opening awaits him In this great age of endurance contests he w1ll become the champlon of champions by srmply making up his mrnd what he wants to do and doing it By 1966 he will have become American champlon pole sitter non stop aviator radio announcer, blcycle r1der and mammy singer He w1ll be the world's undrsputed channel swimmer as once dropped in he will swim back and forth unt11 h1s manager remembers to come and fish h1m out Now that your anxieties as to your futures are all at rest it is only fair to tell you that I learned this morning that Professor Abdullah Freudson Brilling is not a psychiatrist at all but an escaped lunatic from the state asylum Of course that will not affect the accuracy of his notes at all but I thought you might like to know 0 .
