'51, W if Grrls Basketball After much anxious wa1t1ng basketball season iinally arrivrd beuntun gn ls cagerly attended pra ti e in hopes of scoring a xx tory at our first game on December Sth 1 th thf Clenfield Demone tes When the time finally came wa board d the bus and am1d much cheer 1ng singing and talking we were off for our fir st gam On our return xoyage we w re just as happy lor the game ended with a u ory for us After our game with Clenfield we chalked up uctormes untll we received our first defeat at the hands of the Courtenay Kittens We play ed hard but still were forced to admit our defeat lhe rest of the season seemed to skim by us rapidly In no time at all the County lourna ment was upon us Up to this time the weather man had been on our side but after the f1r st night of the to lrnament we were fort ed to postpone the rest of the games because of the stormy weather After a week the snow blo ked roads were cleared and we or e more assumed car roles as tournament basketeers We swlpt oxcr Cla ifield 1n a swirl to help pave the way for our try at becoming champions Which 1nc1d1ntally we did not be ome lhe team played hard 1n a xaliant attempt to get o and stay there bu all was in xam lime after time the guards brought the ball down and the forward 1h turn did the xr part in trying tc raise the s ore bit plays didn t seem to go just right tor 1 ther tht guards lr thx tl rw ards Lois left handed hook shot failed Smitty and Dori en sccmld fcr thc mom nt u haw lost their dextc rous ability for shootlng long shots lhe guards w ertn t able to km p up th r 1 1 1. ord of stopping Bcrdulac s s orlng machine lhe going was tough but ew ryom playmd their hardc st if not their best Our valiant efforts were rewarded by the second place ounty trophy Since the season wasn t ended by the tournament we were able to keep addlng victories to our season s re ord 'lhis included an easy V1 tory ow er Bordulac lh1s game ended with an eleven point spread between the scores A game with Tuanxta ended our season of basketball Boys Basketball At the start of the basketball season in October there were not too many hopeful thoughts about the boys team It appeared there Just wasn t enough height but during some of the hardest games the boys played people began wonder1ng 1f height really did make a difference Some of the shortest players such as Walter Fadness Georgie Hoyt and Ronald Anderson show ed s Ich xery good ball handling that they really didn t need any more height to raise the score at a t1me when they were behind Of course some of the taller players such as Dale Ehlers Tames Hoffman and Rodney Leir helped their team win many games Rodney Leir with his favorite Jump shot was high polnt player throughout the season lhe McHenry Blazers played three games with the Glenfield Demons and every game was fought courageously to the f1I'l1Sl1 only to have Mc!-lenry lose by a small number of points Glenfield with all 1ts tall players seemed to have qu1te a time getting around little 5 Z Walter Fadness as he was always quick to run around and get 1n their way caus1ng them to foul tremendously time after time Durlng the three games the Blazers played w1th Sutton they won all the games two by a lar ge margin and the other by only a one point lead Sutton showed a fighting sp1r1t throughout all these games but MCI-lenry was scoring too many points for Sutton to win During the County Fournament the McHenry Blazers fought hard throughout both of the ganxes they played lhough they struggled to gain first place it seemed that Glenfield was too much to contend with The Blazers were to be happy wzth winning the second place trophy When the time for the District Tournament rolled around everyone was eagerly awaiting the results to see what place the Nlcl-lenry team would win After playing two games the Blazers gained the consolation tr0phy During the course of the grade tournament at Carrington Richard Aasand and James Prescott received medals for their d1stmct1ve playing abilityt Next year's team looks quite promising wxth such players as tall good shooting Anthony Hoffman, hard play ing James Prescott, Richard Graham, and Richard Aasand, also Elton Fadness with his long shot These all show a promising Gtart towards point builders for the next year's teamn 2.5 . 1 - . , . . , K. r ' .
