I McGuffey- ----- - - - - - - HOW IT HAPPENED ln the fateful year of 1910, Dr. J. W. lleeliert, now Director of Me- Guftey Sehool and Professor of Edueation at Miami University, founded a sehool whieh was to he a laboratory in whieli the students of Miami's Sc-hool ol' Edueation could praetiee teaehing. Sinee then. the project has flourished. At first, the school huilding eonsisted of the wing now oeeupied by the Senior and Junior high sehools, and the Musie Department. ln faet, until 1912, the full four year high sehool eonrse was not offered. The enrollment ot' the high sm-hool was tliirty-l'ireg that ol' the entire sehool was one hun- dred l'it'ty-eiglit. Now, the sm-hool has grown so that the senior high sehool enrollment is one hundred and sixty-six, and that ot the whole sehool is v l'ii'e hundred and fourteen. The school was named for William llolnies MeGuffey, who taught ldnglisli at Miami from 1826 to 1836. He is famous as an edueator and partieularly as the author of the Mrflzzffry Renders. The first prineipal of Melluftey was Mr. Schwartz, who is at present Professor of History at Bowling Green, Ohio. He was replaced in 1915 by Mr. Charles S. Bunger, who held that position till his death in 1935. Dr. Uber Slotterheek was ac-ting principal for a year and Dr. J. ll. Uoleinan is now our prineipal. Besides lieing an ext-ellent training sehool For teaehers, Mellufley fits its graduates to he admitted to any of the state universities without taking entrance examinations, and to make excellent records there. page two
