Y-g-4K.-.- FROM THE FIELD Football reached a new high in the season of l93i. The Green Devils, matching speed and eleverness against the superior weight of larger schools, kept their un- defeated record unblemished and extended their successive victories to twenty, scoring 261 points to the opponents' 18. After three weeks of gruelling practice, the Green Devils traveled to Hamilton for the first game of the season. Once there, they proceeded to dazzle Hamilton Vatholic with an array of laterals, passes, reverses, and line bucks to the tune of 47-0. At Reading, the Green Devils ran into a stone wall of determination, hot weather and bad breaks. With only a handful of McGuffey regulars left on the field, the two schools remained in a dead-lock until the fourth period. Then lNIcGuffey took the ball in midfield and refused to give it up till they had a touchdown. This was accomplished via line smashes, short end-jaunts and an end-sweep by Dillard. The game ended with the score unchanged and the second game was won by thc narrow but safe margin of 6 to 0. The next game was considered a breather, so the first team was allowed to re- cuperate, while the reserves rode to Trenton and rode back with the third victory, and the first in the League. The score was 13 to 0. The Eaton game promised to be tough until McGuffey broke Eaton's spirit by a perfectly executed triple lateral pass, Rider to Graham to Dillard, which was good for forty-five yards and a score. A quarter later they executed the same play to the other side for a score. Not satisfied with two scores, the Maeks crossed pay-dirt once more when they broke Dillard loose by perfect blocking on an end run. Cap- tain Evans booted his third extra point of the day and at the gun the score stood 21 to 0. Fairfield was next to fall before the Green Devils. The scorc was 19 to 0 with the Green again on top. However, the score does not describe the gameness of Fair- Held and the many exciting moments in the game. The Green Devils were unable to function smoothly after thc terrific tension built up for the week before. Seven Mile followed and was conquered by thc top-heavy score of 48 to 0. Once more the McGuf'fcy machine was its old self. page thirty ,H v. - . . .Football FROM THE FTELD Cfhnfinuedj Up to this point McGutfey had succeeded in keeping their goal uncrossed, but Monroe, declaring that they were not out for a victory but would be fighting to spoil McGuffeyis unscored-on record, did just that. Monroe passed, McGuffe.v inter- cepted and tried to lateral, which was in turn intercepted and run back for a score. Dazed, the Green Devils allowed Monroe to score once again. From then on McGuffey really went to work and the game ended 43 to 12 with the Green in front. The next week the Green faced the champions of South Central Indiana, Von- nersville. McGuffey scored early on an intercepted pass by big George Rider and a reverse to Dillard. Playing nervously, the Macks allowed l'onnersville to slip over a touchdown and the score stood 7 to 6. O11 'the kickoff, the ball went to Dillard, who started up the middle, and cut to the left to pick up his interference. The Green Devils cut Connersville players down all over the field and liyger led Dillard to the goal line where he partially blocked the last player, Dillard dove over the line. Two quarters later an end-sweep led to the last score. The game ended with the Pon- nersville champs trailing 20 to G. Eight games won, the Green squad entertained the highly touted Terrace Park eleven on a wet, muddy field in their ninth start. MeGuffey easily overcame the Red team, and at the end the score stood 32 to 0 with the Green Devils once more ahead. With Stewart refusing to play McGuifey, Weeb', Ewbanks decided to culminate a perfect season by scheduling Norwood, Uincinnati, for a post season game on Armistice Day. Norwood, looking like a college team, was soundly trounced by the lighter Green Devils. Dillard, in the second quarter on a slant, and Johnson, on an intercepted pass in the fourth, brought the score to 12 for the Macks and a goose egg for the invaders. ' Thus ended the second successive season without a single defeat. A season in which McGuHey for the first time in history played and defeated four class A schools, defended their Little South Western League title, and acquired the mythi- cal title, STATE CHAMPIONS? The spirit of the team and the driving force that drove the boys to victory was inspired by Weeb Ewbanks, to whom no higher tribute can be paid than to repeat, OUR ALL AMERICAN COACH. page thirty one Foofball- The foofball boys in A S+udy of Facial Expression 1 5, tl ty-two A , -M A'rhle+ics BASKETBALL TEAM First row: XV:1lLv1' Gl'2lh2llll. The Green hoopmen romped through the season with no class '4B,' defeats, defeated three class NAU schools, and lost six hard- tought battle to class AU teams. In the tournament, McGuffey went to the semi-finals, where it lost to its arch rival, Stewart. ln the consolation contest, Lockland won. The season developed no spectacular stars, partly because basketball demands continuous, well-timed teamwork rather than grandstanding by any one player. There was grand co-operation on our team, fostered by a real love for sport and the desire to see good old McGuffey come out on top. Lewis Evans contributed his steady playing and retrieving, Don Graham, his fast shots, Chet Johnson his ac- curacy in timing and shooting, Frank Kyger, who was elected permanent captain near the first of the season, his long shots, Bob Fichter, his fast eye, Jr, Graham, his zealous desire to wing Tom McDill, his speed and clever evading, and Dick White, his advantageous height, George Rider, his Herculean build, Bill Alderman, his dependability. The purpose of the Association is to furnish healthful athletic activities to all Senior High School girls who are inter- ested in them. The idea is not one of competition, rather co-operation and good sportsmanship. The executive staff of the Association includes a president, a vice-president, a secretary-treasurer, and representatives from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. This executive staff or board decides all important issues which do not need the vote of the Association, makes recommendations to the Association and proposes issues for vote. 7 A large variety of sports is offered in the hope that everyone may enter into one or more sports each season. The number of sports has increased from six of the first year to about fifteen at the present time. During the four years of its existence, the organization has grown and developed in every way. In May, 1937, the group sponsored a Play Day to which six schools sent representatives. It was the first inter-scholastic attempt made by the Mc- Guffey girls. There was no competition between schoolsg teams were made up of one or two girls from each school. During the day there were baseball, volley-ball, relays, and skits to add to the fun. The Play Day was held again this year and proved even more successful. lt was larger and better organized than in 1937. Now, after two successful years we are sure that the Play Day is an institution that the G. A. A. is proud to have started. To climax the year, the formal banquet is held each spring. This is usually held at the New England Kitchen. The place cards and decorations are made by the girls. Awards are niade and the coming year's officers are installed. So far the Girls' Athletic Association has achieved its purpose in that it has de- veloped a feeling of good sportsmanship and supplied healthful exercise. We hope the organization will continue nndcr ni-xl yn-ar's olliccrs and the guiilznicc of Miss Wohlford. page thirty-eight Afhlefics The G. A. A. Girls In Acfionl SenI0I'STl-Do You Recognize Them? The annual Mixer was looked forward to by every- one to get acquainted with those new kids and to see what new lines others had picked up over the summer. Then, on November 24, came the high-light of the winter season, the Football Dance. With Jack Dillard and Jane Beneke as King and Queen, the Melodiers at their swinging best, and the auditorium gayly arrayed with balloons, this dance was proclaimed one of the best in years. As an experiment, the Party Committee decided to have a dance after the Lock- land cs. Metluffey basketball game on December 10. And so, a dance, to the music of an electric recording machine, was held. lt was reasonably successful for the initial steps towards more of this type of dance. At last came the much talked of Spring Strut on March 25. ..With the help of Harry Williamson and his band, some of our Mclluffey dance specialists twhom we suspect of practicing in secret for a long timej introduced some refreshing new steps which have become very popular with the student body. lt was an innovation and a grand dance. The night of May 20, and the Junior-Senior Reception finally arrived, the night when all the Juniors and Seniors donned their best bibs and tuckers to sway to the irresistible style and rhythm of the Campus Owls. Credit for our swankiest affair of the year goes to Quentin Hyde as president of the Junior class and his committee chairmen, including Edna Cunningham, Robert Fichter, Murray Peters, Barbara Wright, and many other Juniors who helped these chairmen. To top off the year's events, the Seniors under the leadership ol' t'hairman lla White and Committeemen Cynthia Thompson, Myron Beal, Donald Quillin, and Frank Kyger, sponsored a distinctive dance on June 3, featuring Harry William- son's Band. The atmosphere was just right to leave us with a pleasant feeling to carry through the summer. So much for this year, but don't forget to polish up on your lines, kids: there's another Mixer coming next September. page fifty seven Drama'rics SENIOR PLAY SNAPSHOTS Acfivifies McGUFFEY AT PLAY f BILL SHERWIN Wishes All of You Success SWP OXFORD LUMBER COMPANY Phone 36 14 Beech St. cmlmlcxvmllem' DO UGLASS IN v1'1uv1'1 ON s SERVICE STATION OHIO OIL CO.
