H Twenty seven years ago in 1910 the William McGuffey School was founded by Dr.J.W. Heckert, Professor of Education and Di- rector of McGuffey School, as a training school for student teach- ers at Teacher's College of Mi- ami University. The school was named for William McGuffey, who was professor of English at Miami. The original McGuffey School was merely the south wing of our present building. At first there were only two years of high school work offered with an en- rollment of 35. A third year was added in 1911, and in 1912 afull four year course was established. Mr. Schwartz, who is present Professor of History at State Col- lege, Bowling Green, Ohio, was the first principal of McGuffey. He was replaced in 1915 by Mr. Charles S. Bunger, who held that position until his death in 1935. There is a constantly increas- STUD ing attendance. Later a large aud- itorium Was added. Then in 1925 the attendance became so large that it Was necessary to add an extension which cost approxi- mately S165,000. The primary and intermediate departments of Mc- Guffey School, and a large Well- equipped gymnasium are located in this Wing. Thirty-two critic teachers are now employed in McGuffey. The first enrollment of the entire Mc- Guffey School in 1910 was one hundred and fifty-eight. This has increased to five hundred and nine in 1936-37 . In spite of the fact that some people think that practice-teach- ing hinders the progress of the students, excellent Work is done, and McGuifey High School grad- uates are admitted to any of the state universities without taking entrance examinations, a n d there, many have made splendid records.
