William McGuffey High School Miami University Oxford, Chio Volume XVI June 1937 Printed by Industrial Arts Class Edited by M:Gufl'ey Reflector Staff' H Twenty seven years ago in 1910 the William McGuffey School was founded by Dr.J.W. Heckert, Professor of Education and Di- rector of McGuffey School, as a training school for student teach- ers at Teacher's College of Mi- ami University. The school was named for William McGuffey, who was professor of English at Miami. The original McGuffey School was merely the south wing of our present building. At first there were only two years of high school work offered with an en- rollment of 35. A third year was added in 1911, and in 1912 afull four year course was established. Mr. Schwartz, who is present Professor of History at State Col- lege, Bowling Green, Ohio, was the first principal of McGuffey. He was replaced in 1915 by Mr. Charles S. Bunger, who held that position until his death in 1935. There is a constantly increas- STUD ing attendance. Later a large aud- itorium Was added. Then in 1925 the attendance became so large that it Was necessary to add an extension which cost approxi- mately S165,000. The primary and intermediate departments of Mc- Guffey School, and a large Well- equipped gymnasium are located in this Wing. Thirty-two critic teachers are now employed in McGuffey. The first enrollment of the entire Mc- Guffey School in 1910 was one hundred and fifty-eight. This has increased to five hundred and nine in 1936-37 . In spite of the fact that some people think that practice-teach- ing hinders the progress of the students, excellent Work is done, and McGuifey High School grad- uates are admitted to any of the state universities without taking entrance examinations, a n d there, many have made splendid records. The season opened with Hamilton t'atholie, one ol' the stronger teams ot' Hamilton. New .uint was .list'ove1'td and will be hignly developed next season, as prac-lieally the same-squad will return. To stat the season MeGuf'fey walked off with high honors i11 the Triangular meet with College Corner and Lanier. At the Lanier relays McGuffev missed winning by o11e point. In the 0l1l0-1i6llv- tucky meet McGuffey scored only in the 100 yard dash, broad jump, and medley relay for a total of thirteen points. Again, i11 the District, Me- Guffey scored heavily in the dashes, broad jump, and 880 relay, being nosed out by a narrow mar- gin. Winners in the District were sent to Colum- bus to run in the Ohio State Track Meet. Here McGu'ffey scored only three points which were gained by Dillard. Notable. however, was the 830 re ap team which placed sixth in a record break- ing field. BAIEBALL The McGutfey Green Devils, handicapped with poor uniforms, few bats, and very little school spirit in the sport, started their successful season by downing Eaton in a thriller. The score at the end of the game stood at five to four in favor of our boys. This defeat enable McGuffey to have a ciean slate forthe entire year against Eaton defeating them in every sport. Graham led the defense by limiting Eaton to four hits and striking out fourteen men, while Brandly led at the bat with two out of three official trips to the plate. McGuifey continued to win 'the following week bv revenging their basketball defeat, with a shut- out over Liberty. This was probably the out- standing game of the season. The game revealed the strength and power of the McGuffey offense a11d defense. There was only one error in the entire game for McGutfey. In the next game Sherrard, pride of the McGuffey baseball team, pitched his team to a seven to one victory over Darrtown. Next, the team traveled to Liberty to take a fast ball game from them by the -score of sixteen to ten. The following game found Mc- Guffey in the losing column. They were defeated bv Fairfield, last year's runners-up in the state baseball tournament. Although they did not git an earned run, MeGuffey won five to two. MC- Guffey, hitting their stride, defeated Eaton in a. return game at Eaton by the score of six to four. This game was a very laxly played game with both teams making several errors. The McGuffey Green Wave journed to Richmond to play the highly tutored Morton nine. While equaling Mor- ton in hitting, McGuffey took a drubbing to the tune of fourteen to three. The results of the re- turn Morton game and the annual Stewart-Mm Guffey game were too late to be included in this write-up.
