TllE REFLECTOR I9 7 S McGl.7Fl3l'iY SCI IOOI.- History of MoGu1irey School cGLfFl7EY was founded sixteen years ago in l9l2. lts purpose was 1 to be a practice school where students ot' the Teaclier's College of Kliami could receive demonstrations and practice under skilled supervisors. The school was appropriately given the name of that famed author and teacher, Williami ll. Mciluffey, who taught at Miami for many years. The original structure comprised what is now the Senior lsligh School. the junior lligh School, and the Music Department. The second years attendance was one hundred and twenty-five. This increased to one hun- dred and seventy-tive when two years of high school work was added. A lull high school course was adopted, and the building was found too small. The north wing was built on with an expenditure of nearly Slil00,0U0. The new addition offered the Teacher's College wonderful accomodations and gave the McGuiTey students a fine auditorium besides increased privileges in class rooms. Again increased attendance filled the school to overflowing and many prospective students were turned away because of lack ol room. Univer- sity directors and ofhcials considered the matter, a contract was let, and, in l925, fVlcGufTey was proudly boasting of the fine east wing. lt cost 3ill65,000 and is strictly modern, affording ample room for the primary and intermediate departments. The students are especially proud of the new gymnasium. lt is complete in every detail with equipment costing 5533.000 Continued on page Forty-live I7l
