The school was appropriately given the name of that famed author and teacher, Williami ll. Mciluffey, who taught at Miami for many years. The original structure comprised what is now the Senior lsligh School. the junior lligh School, and the Music Department. The second years attendance was one hundred and twenty-five. This increased to one hun- dred and seventy-tive when two years of high school work was added. A lull high school course was adopted, and the building was found too small. The north wing was built on with an expenditure of nearly Slil00,0U0. The new addition offered the Teacher's College wonderful accomodations and gave the McGuiTey students a fine auditorium besides increased privileges in class rooms. Again increased attendance filled the school to overflowing and many prospective students were turned away because of lack ol room. Univer- sity directors and ofhcials considered the matter, a contract was let, and, in l925, fVlcGufTey was proudly boasting of the fine east wing. lt cost 3ill65,000 and is strictly modern, affording ample room for the primary and intermediate departments. The students are especially proud of the new gymnasium. lt is complete in every detail with equipment costing 5533.000 Continued on page Forty-live I7l 'l'llE REELECIUR llllb E l l Mirror Staff Left to right, top to bottom. Lucinda Hadsel is in Spain teaching French to the Irish located there. Do you remember the time she read Les Miserables to us one day in Hrst year French? BEA TRICE BUCHANAN - HI remember when she read that but I was too dumb to understand very much of it. Let's have some music. Sta- tion McG has a rather good program tonight. fShe turns on the radioj RADIO - Station McG, Oxford, Ohio, broadcasting. They have just returned from a European Tour. CStaticj DOROTHY - Turn that off! There's too much static treads from radio programj Genevieve Morris is reading some of her best recipes to- night. It's funny she should have turned out to be such a strong advocator of home-making. She never seemed to care for it when she was in McGuf- fey. She didn't even take home economics. CARVEL - Everyone of the class of '28 is achieving lame. Hazel Sandridge is touring Europe giving speeches for the President T or at least that's what Kendle said. BEA TRICE - USpeaking of old acquaintances, I was talking to Mary Anderson today. Did you know she left Miami to elope with a pro- spective farmer lad when she was a Freshman? Well, she did! They're living on a farm out near Mixerville. I guess Mary is as well known now for her time Plymouth chickens and scientinc house-keeping, as she was a few years ago for her acting on the McGulfey stage. DOROTHY - Well good for Mary! On March 23, several picked speakers of the Oakwood High School of Dayton came to Oxford. Music was furnished by the McGufTey High School Orchestra, and the Boys' Glee Club. Hazel Sandridge made the welcoming address. Robert Cow- den, Eleanor Butler, and Grace Warner were the Oakwood speakers. The topic for the debate was, Resolved: That the Volstead Act should be main- tained as it now stands. McGuffey speakers were jessie Bourne and Alan Funkhouser. Those from Oakwood were L. j. Wood and Howard Davis. Refreshments were served after the program and the students of McGuffey were given a chance to meet the friends of the Oakwood High School of Dayton. On March 29, some of the speakers from the Miamisburg High School came to McGufTey to speak. Lewis Pentecost welcomed Miamisburg. Short talks were given by justin Smith and Eula Riddel, both of Miamisburg. The program ended with a debate, Resolved: That the decision of three judges should replace that of jury. The Miamisburg speakers were Mar- jorie Shade and Margaret Bear. Mcfjuffey speakers were Clarence Roberts and Mary Lou Rogers. An hour of entertainment was then enjoyed by the guests. Genevieve Morris, Alice Schocke, Mary Anderson, Charles Shugert, and Kirk Mee went to Miamisburg at a later date. Lucinda Hadsel, Car- vel Collins, Elwood Denton, Thomas Taylor, and Pat Roudebush went to Oakwood, Dayton, on April 13, and appeared in a joint program there. Quartette: jack Eachus, jack Burke, Allen Funkhouser, Frank Marquis. lThe chorus was composed of all the members of the Glee Club. On the Good-Will programs, the Club sang numbers of a light and humorous nature. Both the audience and the boys in the Club enjoyed these programs to the utmost. Again at Baccalaureate and at Commencement the Boy's Glee Club appeared. At Baccalaureate the Glee Club and Choral Club combined, forming a mixed chorus of sixty-four voices. Commencement marked the last appearance of the Glee Club. At this time, the Club sang a group of three numbers which were well received by the audience. K4 THE REFLECTOR l9Z8 Revue of Defeatless Football Season An irresistable gridiron machine are presented McGuffey in the football world for l927. This team, the best in years, went through a difficult six-game schedule with flying colors. The McGuf- fey gridders revenged a 1926 defeat at the hands of Eaton by crushing her by a Z6 to 6 score, and Hnished up a season of brilliant playing by beating M, M. I. by a I3 to 0 score. Because of their achievement, the football players were presented with gold footballs instead of the usual letters. These gold footballs are symbolic of a championship team. A remarkably matched backheld com- posed of DuBois, Coulter, Kirkpatrick, and Baker was largely responsible for the Greens success although the line was far from weak. Coulter, perhaps the greatest quarter- back ever to wear McGuffey's colors, out-kicked, and out-passed his opponents, and helped Captain Kirkpatrick lead this mighty aggregation to a most envi- able goal. Only two of the championship team will be lost by graduation this year, Cap- tain Hugh Kirkpatrick and jack Burke. These two seniors closed their success- ful careers on the gridiron by tearing the heavy line of M. M. l. to pieces to make holes for McGuffey's plunging backheld. Burke, especially, pllayed a wonderful game. His hghting tactics, against terrific odds. aroused the ad- miration of both backers and opponents. All in all, the 1927 season was the most successful in the history of the school. McGuffey's prestige was in- creased. Her standard of sportsmanship, maintained, and another feather was added to the war-bonnet of Coach j, P. Albert. Pkvlfbkekekek Sidelights on the Gridiron Heros HUGH KIRKPATRICK -- Left end. Captain Kirkpatrick, through his lead- ership qualities, his Hghting spirit, his own excellent playing at the end berth, led his team to undreamed heights - an undefeated season. -lack BURKE - Left tackle. A fierce tackler and an excellent blocker protray jack, Burke is a tight- ing Irishman, a sportsman, and a foot- ball player in every sense of the word. Picture the mountainous cadets of M. M. l.g a doughty tackle from McGulTey out-playing them at every turn, and one has a picture of Burke, a fellow who gave his all to bring success to his team. ALBERT BAKER - Full-back. The lightest man on the team a full- back! lt's a fact, Baker tips the scales at only l28 pounds, but how he utilized his weight. His low charges into the line was the main reason for his success as a line plunger, cool nerves made him the best safety man that has donned McGuffey's green in recent years. His ability to take punishment, together with his skill brought him the highest position on the team-that of Captain for l9Z8. LEON CouL'rER - Quarterback. Leon was one of the most skilled gridders on the team - the greatest all round quarterback to ever represent McGufTey! Coulter was the brains of the teamg he was the man who sent the ball out of danger with his beautiful punts that ranged from 55 to 60 yards: the man who sent unerring passes to that brilliant pair of ends, Kirkpatrick and Murray. ROBERT SPENNY - Right guard. A mere stripling of l80 pounds and a six foot, four inch frame is Robert Spenny. His size alone makes him an asset to McGufTey and he broke into many of the games as right guard alter- nating with Schriever. He is only a junior and will be of great value to the l928 team. CHARLES SHUGERT - Right end. Chuck Shugert, although a senior, had his career on the gridiron restricted QContinued on page Thirty-ninej l33l THE REFLECTOR I9 2 S 1 GRIDIRON HEROS, tContinued from Page Thirty-eighty to one year. He was injected into many of the games and his pass-receiving abili- ty accounted for many long gains. He will be missed next year. His worth to his team was inestimable. He scored five touchdowns himself, kicked the goals after the touchdowns, and swept the ends for long runs. ARTHUR Davis - Left Guard. Arty Davis, had his first taste of high school football in IQZ7. His develop- ment was amazing. He proved himself an excellent tackler and blocker, a well- fitting cog in the Big Green's machine. Ilis value lies not so much in his present worth but in his future. He is only a sophomore but is one of McGuffey's hopes for other championship teams. LEE HIMELI-:R -- Right Half. Unfortunate youth! Unfortunate Mc- Guffeyl Lee was injured in one of the early games of the season and his al- ready brilliant career was cut short, During a year and a fraction that he played, he was one of the Big Green's greatest ground-gainers. Time after time he reeled off beautiful end-runs that usually culminated in touchdowns. Clean, quiet, unassuming, and the swiftest of the flying backfield, he gave to his school until forced to retire. His injury was not of a permanent nature every one is glad to know. lle has the unbegrudging gratitude of lVlcGuffey. HAROLD Dulioise - Left Half. The hardest-hitting line-plunger on the team. The fastest man on the team, and the leading scorer Co touch-downs? was Butch DuBois. lle broke up more passes than any of the other backfield men. DoNAi.D NTURRAY - Right End. of McGuFfey's himself one of represent the and his amaz- not a little in Don Murray, one three-letter men, proved the best ends ever to school. His hard tackling ing pass-receiving helped winning the six hard games that Mc- Guffey went through undefeated. During the latter part of the season, he was tried at one of the half back positions and proved himself very well adapted to ball-carrying. LAURENCE KIRKPATRICK -- Right Half. The injury of the fleet Himelick neces- sitated the Ending of some man to hll his shoes. Coach Albert looked over his aspirants, saw Laurny , the mighty captains kid brother, and chose him for the backfield position, Without 'former experience, he develop- ed into one of the best backheld and holds much promise since he is only a sophomore. KIRK MFE - Right Tackle. Kirk Mee proved himself to be one of the best tacklesg a fit mate for Burke, the other tackle. A real fighting spirit, and general all-round ability are em- bodied in lke. He is educated in foot- ball lore and is one of Alberts most ex- perienced athletes. EDWARD SCHRIEVER - Right Guard. Ed Schriever proved himself a very reliable guard. His blocking ability matched that of Davis. The fact that he was good enough to gain a position on the Championship team and receive a gold football is all that needs to- be said. GLENN DENNISON - Center. Glenn is another promising sophomore. Without previous experience, Dennison donned the moleskins and developed in- to an excellent center. When we think of Glenn we think of the Hartwell game and how this promising youth snatched up a fumble and raced ninety-five yards for a touchdown. THOMAS TAYLDR - Right End. Red Taylor had his 'chance to show his stuff during the injury of Murray, right end. Red turned out two weeks late, but he learned fast, and when Al- bert looked about for an end to replace Murray, he found in Red just what he wanted a sure tackler, and a swift end. A hard seventeen-game schedule presented a real barrierg yet through co- operation, good coaching, and strong backing from the loyal McGuffey stu- dent body, the team was able to go through a very successful season. To create a winning team was Coach j. P. Albert's Hrst and only problem. By putting l-lugh Kirkpatrick at center, Murray and Mee at the forward posi- ions. and Coulter and DuBois as guards, the coach found just what he wanted. New and very successful plays were drilled into the team. Long prac- tices and the development of passing rather than dribbling were essential in the team's success, and they had plenty of both. A team is no stronger than its reserve and in Spenny, Shugert, and Kirkpatrick, the coach had three very capable bas- keteers. Spenny, because of his height Csix foot-four inchesl proved invaluable at center, and Shugert and Kirkpatrick broke into the line-up as forward and guard respectively, Three non-conference games were played and all were lost, One to the Miami Freshman: another to the county champions, West Chester Cat the dis- trict tourneyl. and the last to a veteran Alumni team. The l928 basketball team was a success. Although small, it made up for size in speed, and besides had two other es- sentials found onl in championship teams: excellent coaching, and the spirit to win against all odds, but to win only by fair SUCCESS! NYU I4lI THE REFLECTOR 1928 McGufTey Wins Baseball Trophy McC-ufley's chances seemed very slim at the beginning of the l928 season be- cause of the loss of Richard Maley, the pitching ace of l927, but with DuBois and Kunkle, Maley's fellow Bathites, to carry the pitching burden, things proved to be better. Although playing only four regular games, and losing one of them by a 4 to 3 count when they stepped out of their class to play Hamilton High School, the McGufTeyites entered the district baseball tourney at Hamilton and emerged with the district champion- ship. Heavy stick work and excellent pitching won for them. In their first game in the tourney McGuFfey sub- merged the Butler County Champions, Darrtown, by a Zl to 3, In their next and last game in the district tournament, the team again showed their ability by defeating Lebanon by a lfl to 3 score. Not being satisned with the district championship, the lVIcGuffey nine jour- neyed to Columbus and emerged runners- up in the state tournament. To win this enviable position, the Big Green had to defeat Clyde, and Doylestown, two of the strongest! teams in the state. Their having to play two games in one day was largely responsible for their loss in the hnals, but to be runners-up isn't to be sniffed at. As a result of their excellent showing in the two tournaments, the nine re- ceived two beautiful loving cups. One as a symbol of a district championship, and the other for being runners-up in the State Contest. Irwin Kunkle, pitcher, Charles Shu- gert, and jack Hill are the only members to graduate this june, and although they will be hard to replace, McGufTey hopes to find and develop some promising youngsters to HH their shoes. Un- der the expert coaching of Miss Alice Young of Miami, the sixteen girls who turned out gained a knowledge of basketball fundamentals. There were enough girls to form two teams. Hazel Sandridge and t'Mud Duvall were elected captains. The girls met every Thursday afternoon to practice. Two games were scheduled with a team composed of alumnae girls. Although the Varsity was handicapped by lack of experience, they put up a game fight and furnished much opposition to the alumna, The scores were 10-5, and I8-8, in favor of the Freshman Liberal Arts Team of Miami. The superior shooting of the Miami forwards made the score one- sided. Letters and numerals were awarded to the players. Stars were added to the letters that Rosemary DuVall and Marjorie Damm won last year. First year letters were given Ruby jacobs, Beatrice Buchanan, Lucinda lladsel, and Genevieve Morris. Numerals were given to Hazel Sandridge. Esther Klemme, .lessie Bourne, Mary Duerr. Mary Lou Rogers, and Anna Hawkins. I-l4l THE REFLECTOR l 9 2 S HISTORY fcontinued from page Sevenj With such facilities and the splendid help of a first class faculty, McCuffey has set a record that schools many times its size cannot equal. McGufTey is essentially a practice school, but graduates from its halls are well prepared for any college. McGuf'fey won a trophy for having the best freshmen on the Miami Campus in l924-25, and its students held third in l9Z5-26. Although a school is primarily to give an education, sports are also important. This year the school boasts two non-defeated teams-one in football, and one in basketball. The baseball season was aigreat success. Two trophy cups were captured - one from the county, and one from the state. From the records of the past and the deeds of the present, McGufTey may look forward to a brilliant future. This year a tablet is to be erected to the memory of William H. McGuffey. The members of the school contributed generously. The tablet may be placed on the McGuffey grounds. Plfbkbkbkfls PROPHECY fcontinued from page Sixteenj BEA TRICE - l'm hungry. U. conducted this year a second annual essay contest on the topic Alcohol and Traffic Safety. The society provided prizes for McGuffey High School, which were awarded at a special as- sembly, june hrst. Wallace Roudebush and Howard Goldsmith tied for first prize. They were given two dollars each. Dorothy Ledwell and lsabel Shera divided the second prize of two dollars and a half. jessie Bourne received the third prize of fifty cents. 'The two first prize essays were read in assembly, and appreciated greatly by the students. They will be sent to the state headquarters to be entered in the state contest. More students entered the contest this year than last, and the W. C. T. McGuffey in the early eighteen-forties compiled the well-known McGuffey Readers. lt is said that he kept the material for each one of his eight readers in a separate drawer, and as he sat at the table working, he revolved the table about until the drawer containing the material on which he wished to work was before him. As soon as he came upon material for another reader, he revolved the table again. ln this way his work was greatly facilitated. The table used to stand in a small recitation room in the McGuffey building. Many of the present seniors can someday say proudly to their admiring grandchildren,, Yes, back in the early nineteen-twenties, we studied at the every table which William H. McGuffey used in writing his famous readers. Maybe it was due to his influence that we occasionally 'pulled' a hundred in geography. ln l836 the first edition of the McGuffey Readers appeared. They soon became popular, and were used more in grammer schools than any other reader of similar type. William H. McGuffey wrote his readers at Miami University, and was also an active professor here. His first position was that of professor in Latin, Greek, iand Hebrew, the appointment to which he secured in 1826. Later he became professor of Mental Philosophy and Philology. He died in 1873, and has been honored, by Miami by having the McGuffey School named forhim.
