OF EDUCATION School Board-First row, left to right: Mr. Charles Alexander, Mrs. Irene Bordwell, Mr. Donald Ryan, Mrs. Irene Kinney, Mrs. Muriel Hulbert. Second row: Mr. Edward Bilodeau, Mr. LeRoy A. Baer, Mr. Louis Russell, Mr. Chester Lacy. Board of Education 'Today in this age ot Sputnik the schools are receiving much criti- cism because Russia seems to have the upper hand in an attempt to control outer space. It is only natural for a people to rationalize or try to put the blame for failure on something or someone else. The schools become the target of much of this criticism and blame. We have not produced enough mathematicians or scientists. We are falling short by emphasizing education in a broader sense and are spending too much time with music, art, athletics, and the so-called frills of education. We had a similar situation hack in the time of World War II when so many of our young men were found physically unfit for active military duty. The schools were said to be at fault because they did not have physical education programs that developed their bodies properly. No doubt at that time and at this, some legitimate fault can be found with the schools but they should not have to stand for all of the criticism. The people of the United States have become more and more accustomed to take life easier. We have fewer hours of work per day and per week. We want more money for doing less. We think we need coffee breaks, vacation with pay, and higher unemployment pay if we are out of work. With these conditions at home can we expect our boys and girls to work in school and go home and do homework? They want to take life easier too and in-a great many cases they do. However, the schools, including the board of education and the teachers are willing and anxious that each boy and girl achieve up to his or her ability and it is true in America today as it has been in the past that the young people with the ideals, goals, and ambition, to get ahead will find the opportunity to succeed and develop into the mathematicians, scientists and leaders of tomorrow, who will be equal to or surpass any in the world. With life on such a competitive scale there always will be times when others will be ahead but you will find that boys and girls are better educated today than they ever have been before and the schools will continue to improve and meet the challenge of the times.
