A Syracuse University graduate, Mrs. Taylor has been our art instructor for five years. Through these years, she has not only taught, but has been an advisor for one section of the seventh grade. Furthermore, who helps with cafeteria decorations, assists with school posters, and loans out valuable art-room equipment-none other than Mrs. Taylor. We shall miss her patience, her graciousness, and her helping hand. But we are certain that she will he as much an asset to others as she has been to us. Second row: Mr. Edward Bilodeau, Mr. LeRoy A. Baer, Mr. Louis Russell, Mr. Chester Lacy. Board of Education 'Today in this age ot Sputnik the schools are receiving much criti- cism because Russia seems to have the upper hand in an attempt to control outer space. It is only natural for a people to rationalize or try to put the blame for failure on something or someone else. The schools become the target of much of this criticism and blame. We have not produced enough mathematicians or scientists. We are falling short by emphasizing education in a broader sense and are spending too much time with music, art, athletics, and the so-called frills of education. We had a similar situation hack in the time of World War II when so many of our young men were found physically unfit for active military duty. The schools were said to be at fault because they did not have physical education programs that developed their bodies properly. No doubt at that time and at this, some legitimate fault can be found with the schools but they should not have to stand for all of the criticism. The people of the United States have become more and more accustomed to take life easier. We have fewer hours of work per day and per week. We want more money for doing less. We think we need coffee breaks, vacation with pay, and higher unemployment pay if we are out of work. With these conditions at home can we expect our boys and girls to work in school and go home and do homework? They want to take life easier too and in-a great many cases they do. However, the schools, including the board of education and the teachers are willing and anxious that each boy and girl achieve up to his or her ability and it is true in America today as it has been in the past that the young people with the ideals, goals, and ambition, to get ahead will find the opportunity to succeed and develop into the mathematicians, scientists and leaders of tomorrow, who will be equal to or surpass any in the world. With life on such a competitive scale there always will be times when others will be ahead but you will find that boys and girls are better educated today than they ever have been before and the schools will continue to improve and meet the challenge of the times. Senior 0 ficers The class of ,58 has had a successful journey through high school. ln their Junior year they skyrocketed to break all records on their magazine sales, and this year their Senior play, Hillbilly Weddin' was a smash. 'They chose the red and white rose as their class flower and 'LA man doesn't achieve wisdom, until he realizes that he is indispensable, as their motto. The goal of their struggle through high school finally was achieved when they went to Washington, D. C., and New York City over the Easter vacation. , ROBERT .IOHN ADAMS February 18, 1940 Glee Club 1, 2, 3, 4g Select Chorus 3, 43 Year- book Club 4, Advertising Chairman 4, Band 1 2 3 4g Select Band 3, 45 Library Club 1 2 3 4, Track 2g Reserve Book Club 1, RAYMOND ALLEN September II, 1940 Yearbook Club 4g FFA 1, 2, 3, 4, Treasurer 3, Secretary 4g Library Club 1, 25 Soccer 2, 3g Track 35 Reserve Book Club 1, 2, 33 Baseball 2, 3, Volleyball 3. We also go to the contest each spring and have received a rating of HAH for the last four years. This year there are two new organizations in the band, the dance band and the pep band. The pep band played for a basketball game and the dance band played for one of the mixers. Both these bands are made up of the students from the senior band.
