LIBHHRU LAMONT MEMORIAL FREE LIBRARY The Lamont Memorial Free Library is a beautiful old building with Ionic pillars. It was built more than 100 years ago by Marcus McGraw, son of the founder of the village. It later became the property of John B. Lamont, father of the Hon. Daniel Scott Lamont, Secretary of war during the second Cleveland adminis- tration. After the death of,Mrs. J. B. Lamont, in 1906, her- daughter-in-law Mrs. Juliet Kinney Lamont,.w1dow of Daniel Lamont, conceived the idea of converting the old homestead into a public library if the citigens so de- sired. Her offer was eagerly accepted, and the neces- sary steps taken. The association was formed, by-laws adopted, name decided upon, and first board of trustees elegted. The formal opening reception was held July 23 190 , That the Library might be a public one, and state aid secured, an arrangement was made that Mrs. Lamont should pay all running expenses, the peoplqfbuying the books. After the death of Mrs. Lamont, her daughter, Miss Elizabeth Lamont, assumed theexpense. The first librarian was Mrs. Charolotte Fancher. She was followed by Miss Helen Salzmann Mrs. Catherine Coon, Miss Marion Van Arnam and the present librgrian Mrs. Florence walter, who has so ably filled the posi- tion for more than 25 years. From the small beginning, many improvements have been madeg the grounds extended, and new rooms made available. The library also serves as a Community House, and many societies use it for their activities. At the end of'the first year, there were 1153 volumes and 10 periodicals. There are now about 10,000 volumes, 8,381 in circulation and 35 magazines. In 1946, Miss Lamont deeded the building and grounds to the Village of McGraw. Since that timethe village has assumed the support. The school is indeed proud of the Library, and grateful for the many benefits it supplies. by Claribel warren 28
