HOME!! The big day. The trip up the Columbia, looking- at the landmarks so familiar from the weekend cruise days of the past. Fears that the lay-over in Astoria would make the welcome home anti-climatic were quickly dispelled as the small craft fell in behind us with welcome home signs, the fireboats joined the parade with a spectacular water spray display, bridgetenders and people on the beach waved their welcomes. As the ship passed under the Burnside Bridge, it was evident that this was indeed to be a hero ' s welcome. Television, radio and news- paper coverage was almost frighteningly extensive; the hundreds of spectators at the seawall shouted wildly to their loved ones even before the ship was in ear-shot. No coat of black soot this time, as the McGinty moored easily and gracefully to the seawall. The Civilian Navy had come home. For most, the homes were the same, the cars were the same, the jobs were the same. But they took on a new meaning now. And of the ten months just passed, of the places visited and the new friends, all of us have many memories which we will cherish a lifetime.
