LONG BEACH First stop was Long Beach, where we spent two weeks alongside a ten- der in what was to be the first of many tender and yard availabilities needed to bring the ship back up to operating standards. So far, this might have been a two- week cruise. Morale was high, liberty was generous, and Captain Paul ' s, The Gyro Room and the Pike fur- nished most of the memories we cherish.

PEARL HARBOR In November, the McGinty pulled into its new home. Many of the mar- ried men were joined shortly by their wives; for the others, the Paradise of the Pacific was still the Rock, with its exorbitant prices, unattain- able women, snarling bus drivers, and the ever-present HASP. But time will erase these memories. Even now as you read this, you may be recalling the balmy days at Prince Kuhio beach, the cold beers at the Hofbrau, the enchanting atmosphere of the Moana, the thrill of surfboard- ing, or the noislv little bars on Hotel Street. These are the memories we will cherish.
