NCIPAL AND VICE-CHANCELLOR F. CYRI L JAMES N l K MGGILL UNIVERSITY MONTREAL2 To the Class of 1951, My congratulations on your achievements, and warm good wishes as you start out on the next chapter of your indi- vidual careers. In times that seemed more peaceful and less complex, it was customary to indulge in prophecy on the occasion of graduation, to delineate the characteristics of the world in which you will pla an active part. I shall not attempt that, but I can say with profound conviction that never before has mankind more clearly recognized its need for educated men and women. In a physical sense, the world needs engineers and agricultural specialists to rebuild and improve it. The health of mankind, which becomes an integrated problem in these days of air travel, needs for its protection doctors and nurses, as well as physiotherapists, social workers, dietitians and many other groups. Lawyers, ministers of religion, humanists, economists and philosophers are needed to help in the search for solutions to those problems that are beyond the scope of engineers or physicians. Perhaps these needs have always existed, but this generation, which has lived in an atmosphere of economic and political tension and witnessed tremendous technological progress is more deeply conscious of them than its predecessors. Each one of you is faced with splendid opportunities to use your knowledge in the welfare of mankind, and I should like to express the hope that each of you may experience both the pride of acc plishment and the joy of working at a job worth doing. Good luck to you. eel
