Busing was an issue at every school but it was the main factor that brought the students to McGavock. On Septem- ber 7, 1971, the school buses unloaded approximately 2600 students at the doors of McGavock. These students would soon make McGavock High School come to life. The ideas, im- pressions, and activities created by these students would remain guidelines for students of the future. All our feelings of loyalty and devotion for our pre- vious schools would be left outside. Although we came from different schools with different ideas, when we entered McGavock, we immediately had one common bond — we all felt small and insignificant, lost and bewildered. A mass confusion set in as we were split up into groups and guided into the four small school cafeterias. After a brief introduction by our small school principals, we were further divided into smaller groups. It was in these groups that we met our homeroom teachers, who led us, helpless, to our next des- tination. Leaving homeroom registra- tion, we entered the halls with their different colored walls and oddly num- bered doors seeking a friend, a familar face. Our first lesson was in map reading. Everyone had a map, because no one knew where he was going. Maps were here, maps were there, maps were everywhere
