On Septem- ber 7, 1971, the school buses unloaded approximately 2600 students at the doors of McGavock. These students would soon make McGavock High School come to life. The ideas, im- pressions, and activities created by these students would remain guidelines for students of the future. All our feelings of loyalty and devotion for our pre- vious schools would be left outside. Although we came from_ different schools with different ideas, when we entered McGavock, we immediately had one common bond — we all felt small and insignificant, lost and bewildered. A mass confusion set in as we were split up into groups and guided into the four small school cafeterias. After a brief introduction by our small school principals, we were further divided into smaller groups. It was in these groups that we met our homeroom teachers, who led us, helpless, to our next des- tination. Leaving homeroom registra- tion, we entered the halls with their different colored walls and oddly num- bered doors seeking a friend, a familar face. Our first lesson was in map reading. Everyone had a map, because no one knew where he was going. Maps were here, maps were there, maps were everywhere METROPOLITAN NASHVILLE on coananae Saepness Bers a ee Pe Sagee ee, ey : aaa OR a ss eae EE arts ee Biba We ee het ere Although our maps showed a finished school, we soon found out different. The walls were wet, the ceiling had holes, and we had no name on our school. As we walked into the office, our eyes automatically shifted to the many wires sticking out of the wall. Our school wasn’t physically ready for us, and our mental attitudes weren’t the greatest. Due to the size of Mc- Gavock, each of us felt like aliens. We kept on asking ourselves, ‘Where do I stand here?” or ‘‘How can I become a part of the huge school?” Well, as we began associating with others, these questions began to an- swer themselves. Our school began to grow and soon we were starting to work together. We decided to play the Mc- Gavock game. ee ee Pal P aa co a nk PE eatoeg td Bs Ai ae ae Taare, : Baecn te saad nem Pee a ee or Pei: Ms Siete RRM OE. One of the most modern differences was the Carpet. When we walked into the classrooms, our eyes were focused on the walls between each classroom — there were none! QOpen-space classrooms and 3- room “pods’’ were new to everyone. Among classroom conveniences were private desks called ‘study carrels.” These independent desks have been very useful. Also, McGavock is equipped with many nice conference rooms. These are just a few of the differences at McGavock. In the next few pages, we will touch upon our vocational wing, commercial area, Late to Class—Report to Office Blue card filled out wrong Report to start HOMEROOM Got sick on doughnuts go to clinic OFFICE Bus didn’t come— Report to Homeroom Ate burnt biscuits in Foods— report to clinic Office Wait for principal Skip two turns Car blocking exit- wait one turn Snow day— no school Go back five trying to park— Make better grades than if you’d taken the exam—take extra turn With the use of dice and token, take turns rolling and moving your token the indicated number ofspaces. The vocational aspect of McGavock | amazes many people. For example, what other school has its own T. V. studio? With cameras, tapes, and special light- ing, someday we might be able to pro- duce our own show. Among the unique things at McGavock is our astronomy lab. By having our own planetarium, our science depart- ment has drawn the attention of more students. | In the vocational wing of McGavock, we have an auto shop. This course helps to prepare students for a future in auto mechanics. Besides having an auto shop and astronomy lab, we also have our own computer. Yes, McGavock is different and we have many opportunities awaiting us. CT GEE: When entering McGavock, you’d think you were going through a small town. As you walk through the halls, you soon come upon the small theatre. With cushioned seats, special lighting, and a modern atmosphere, who can’t be proud of it? In another section of the building is our printing shop. The equipment and supplies we have are very useful. By taking this course, students can be-better prepared for @ollege and professional printing Ale a ar Ng IC cs % The commercial foods department is one of the most interesting aspects of McGavock. Through this course, stu- dents learn the details in preparing meats, etc. for sale to the customers. CICS sel ee an 14 When speaking of McGavock as a small town, we can’t leave out our radio station. Through the broadcasting of WMHS, students learn how to be- come disc jockeys. We also have our own ‘‘Puppeteers.”’ The ‘‘Puppeteers’’ perform puppet shows, which give you the beauty and creativeness of the performing arts. Another vocational section of McGavock is the machine shop. Students learn the basics in auto mechanics through this course. Welding is also in the vocation- al wing. Our library is so large that we couldn’t possibly forget to mention it. Although we have few books, we do have an audio visuals room on the bottom floor. In the past few pages, we have covered only parts of the significant sights of McGavock. As McGavock began growing, we felt more important. We wanted to make our school well known, so celebrities began visiting us. Our first big assembly brought the whole school together for the first time. The Army band and chorus from Wash- ington, D.C. entertained us: he assemb- bly was fantastic and we all had a great time. McGavock had its second celebrity visit at one of our PISA meetings. We were priviledged to have Governor Dunn speak. Chet Atkins, then, took time out from his busy schedule to help the guitar students learn the fundamen- tals of guitar playing. etc. Siacabsennya de saya iit oY erate er AAI PET AP LEAR ein COSI SNA eS seecemawne AS IDRK ENE ne IEEE INS EEE SBA dorsi. 40% Pitomots) Abi se “4 Rene Nene) eeu And when the evening comes, we smile. cAeanh nit ROLE LLL L ELLIE ALLEL LAL AIO AED (eal LDCR ENN EERE, SEEN EAI EERIE. The Senior Advisory Committee was among the very first groups organized at McGavock High School. Formed during the summer, the members of this group were notified to come to the then incomplete McGavock High School, before even the final de- cision concerning bussing had been made. The students who composed the Senior Advisory Committee were chosen because of student offices they were currently holding or would have held this year at their original high schools. Since these students had been chosen by their peers to represent them at their various schools, the administration felt they would, by working together, be qualified to help bring the student body at Mc- Gavock together as a united group. Since McGavock High was to include students from so many high schools, the Senior Advisory Committee included pupils from the dominant schools McGavock would consist of. There were three stu- dents from Cameron, three students from Donelson, and three from Two Rivers. Antioch and Central each contributed one student to the committee. The Senior Advisory Committee was the only form of student government at McGavock until the stu- dent council was formed late in the year. For one entire semester, this group was the main link the students had with the administration. The Senior Advisory Committee had many ac- complishments during the 71-72 school year. Some of these were: Choosing the school colors Deciding upon the McGavock mascot Designing the class r ing Choosing the format for student council Among their last duties was coming to a decision concerning graduation invitations and caps and gowns. They had “Great Expectations’ and fulfilled them well. These pages help to tell the story. It began on a misty morn in mid-August as over one- hundred young musicians and their directors met in an abandoned field near the school. It was muddy and poorly mown, the lines were faint and crooked, but their minds were set and in an amazingly short amount of time, they perfected their first show. Wi th it, they captured third place in their first competition in the Vanderbilt Open—a fantastic accomplishment for a band that had been together less than a month. Their second show was even more successful than their first. The Rambling Raider Band took the Hillbilly Day Contest by storm. A superior performance won them the Mayor’s Cup and all other honors that accompany first place. Then less than two weeks later, the band returned to Vanderbilt for the MTSBOA Festival where they won their fifth trophy for an “A” rating. On October 23rd, in their finest performance at the “Contest of Champions’’ on the MTSU Campus, they won the honor of being one of the two bands to be called back for a second performance to see who was to be called “Champion.” This whirl-wind courtship with success can be attributed to a number of things—spirit, pride, a strong desire for accomplishment, and most certainly the brilliant direction of Kenton J. Hull and Jay Dawson. ‘’E Pluribus Unum’’—out of many one. As Band 2, these students are responsible for letting people know that our bands cannot be divided into distinct groups by their abilities. A fine band in their own right, they have given us reason to be very proud. Under the direction of Mr. Jay Dawson, this band has performed in two concerts, the MTSBOA Concert Festival and, divided into a woodwind choir and brass choir, they participated in the Solo and Ensemble fes- tival. The Spring trip this year took them to Knoxville for the Dogwood Arts Festival where they per- formed both as a concert band and as a march- ing band. F i“ S es ee A Wind Ensemble The McGavock High School Wind Ensemble has been a very active, very honored group this year. Chosen as one of only eight bands in the South- east to perform at the Music Educators National Conference, Mr. Hull’s group traveled to Atlanta in March. One of the very finest groups in the state, this ensemble has presented two concerts, and attend- ed all area contents,, The woodwind choir, the brass choir, and percussion ensemble have also proven to be very good as have the individual performers. They placed thirteen students in the All-State Band and nineteen the All-Middle Tenn- essee Band. After passing faculty approval on basis of grade and conduct, each candidate for halftimer performed on a short routine. The final selection of halftimers was done by a panel of qualified judges. After many hours of practice these students performed during the halftime of the boys basketball team to entertain the spectators. Sponsored by Miss Wanda Jane Smith, Captain; Randall Williams, co-captain; Agnes Oglesby, Fletcher Moon, | Linda Redmon, Edna Thomas, Rhonda Buchanan, Sherrel Morris, Faye Claybrooks, Denise Langsten, Vickie Herbert, Denise Harris, Pamela Hailey, Portia Reed, Beverly Braden, Vanessa Morris, Regina Helms, Nevada Scales, and Connie Hall. 178 Although the 71-72 team was young, they were a team. As the season progressed, fine individual efforts like that of Steve Flatt (pictured above) kept “Big Mac’’ on_ top. Out of every team ‘Superstars’ arise. It is essential for the “winning combination”, and McGavock was no exception. As the season progressed McGavock was seen not only in the win column, but in the individual honors. _eseennen wie ie al oth ‘ : ' z ep ry ad eS i a oasis : : { { : . 2) = 3 ° U i = Y as) = —— a) The issue of the way in which a student council would be formed at McGavock was a controversial one for many months. Everyone at McGavock wanted a student council that would represent the views and ideas of all the students, and therefore, be beneficial to the entire school, but no one was quite sure of how this task could be successfully accomplished. Taken into consideration was the fact that McGavock’s student body consisted of almost 3,000 students of dif- ferent races, and coming from a variety of social back- grounds, and a cross section of neighborhoods and schools. There appeared to be no way for a student council to conform to the many different needs of McGavock’s cross section of students. The administration devised a plan for electing student council representatives. Three would be chosen from each homeroom, and at least one of the three would have to be black. This plan would have guaranteed that there would be an appropriate ratio of blacks to whites in the council. Some concerned students, both black and white, did not like the idea of anyone telling them who they had to vote for, or the concept of the guaranteed ratio. These people felt that the students of McGavock should have the right to choose representatives for student council on the basis of the qualifications for the job. Regardless of color, if a person was qualified for the job, then he would get the position. The Senior Advisory Committee (having been formed even before the official opening of school) was given the awesome task of developing a plan for a working student council. The Advisory Committee was finally successful in devising a plan that was approved by the majority of the students. Each homeroom would elect two representatives. It was not required that one of the students be of the minority race. However, if, after all the homeroom representatives were chosen, and there was not enough blacks on the council, there would be a special election in order to put some on the student council. The students at McGavock were also anxious to dispose of the old President, Vice president, etc. concept that have always run student councils at most other schools. Instead, McGavock had an Executive Council which con- sisted of one senior, one junior, and one sophomore from each of McGavock’s four small schools. These 12 people were elected after a three-day campaign. The students could vote for only one person from each grade and only those candidates from their own school. The senior executive council member assumed the duties that the president usually performs. The junior was in the position as vice-president and the sophomore assumed the duties of a secretary. Because McGavock is so large, having two representatives from each homeroom still composed a group of more that 160 people. This group was still two large for any serious discussion and solving of problems. Conse- quently, the executive council was summoned for im- portant decision- making meetings. They would then re- late what happened to the rest of the student council at small school meetings. The student council was successful in accomplishing many tasks and acquiring many much-desired activities for McGavock students. The majority of the students were very much _ pleased with their student council and felt that most of the time it represented them all. North School The duly elected members of the McGavock North Executive Com- mittee for the year ‘71-’72 are An- thony Durham—senior, Steve Doran —junior, and Jo Anne Benson— sophomore. This year, Anthony, Steve, and Jo Anne have done a superb job of curbing chaos. Actual- ly, the homeroom _ representatives have really succeeded in getting our student government off to a good start. Next year’s student council will have large shoes to fill. “ se cadence tsaies East School The students of McGavock East chose Steve Garner for the 12th grade, Steve Flatt for the 11th grade, and Joy Flatt for the 10th grade to rep- resent them on the ’71-’72 Executive Committee. They have aided the homeroom representatives in arrang- ing such activities such as assem- blies, dances and pep meetings. They have done a really great job this year and the juniors and sophomores are looking forward to a fantastic next year. South School The McGavock South Executive Com- mittee for ‘71-72 consisted of Tho- mas Miller--senior, Sherrill Morris— junior, and Pam Rutherford—sopho- more. They have been helpi ng each other to direct the activities of those chosen by their individual home- rooms. This has been a hectic first year, but they have come through with flying colors. They have set many precedents for the years to come and next year’s council has much to look forward to. ume = SS West School Kevin Wright was chosen from the seniors, Scott West from the jun- iors, and Jan Smith from the soph- omores by McGavock West to rep- resent them on the Executive Com- mittee for the school year ‘71-72. These students have filled their posi- tions well. They have worked with the homeroom representatives and the student councils of North, East, and South to provide all of the stu- dents of McGavock a productive year. During the fall semester, emphasis had been placed on academics, but now we were ready to broaden our interests. Through the efforts of concerned students and faculty members, second semester brought many exciting activities to McGavock. For the first time, we began having pep meetings with the entire student body crammed into the gym. Of course, some of us had to sit on the floor, but that was part of the fun. We also had a variety of exciting assemblies for the small schools. There were many _ activities taking place at night, too— dances, talent shows, ball games. We were finally beginning to feel that McGavock was a real school with everything to offer that our old school had, plus a lot more Faculty Advisor to Student Activities One of the many new positions introduced to McGavock in its first year has been ‘Faculty Advisor to Student Activities’. The man in charge is Coach Mel Brown. His duty is to listen to student grievances and suggestions and make them known to the administration and faculty. He also arranges conferences between the students and faculty to discuss these issues. As a result of this service several activities have been established in our school. Among them are the Brunch Shop, intramurals, the tutoring program, pep meetings, the rap room and the talent show. Youth Guidance | The Youth Guidance Officers, headed by George Currey, are a group of young men interested in the youth of today. There are thirty-five men involved in this organ- ization which is divided into three cate- gories: preventive, investigative, and en- forcement. The preventive division works mainly in the schools giving lectures and counseling with students. On the weekend they are on patrol as are regular policemen. The _ in- vestigative division deals with runaways and school burglaries. The enforcement division works answering radio calls deal- ing with cases of a more criminal nature — such as child abuse. Assemblies ... The McGavock Jazz Rock Group The McGavock Jazz Rock Group was one of the first assemblies here at M.H.S. They performed for the North, South, and West schools. Lucretia Mac Evil, Jesus Christ Super Star, and Shaft were among the popular numbers they did. The group was honored by Channel 2 when they were ask to do a taping for them. Jimmy Bass JIMMY BASS came to us from Andrew Price Metho- dist Church. He preformed twice for M.H.S._ stu- dents. He was very talented by playing both a banjo and a guitar while tapping a tambourine with his foot. “Tech Symphony Band” This symphony band was from Tennessee Technological University. It was a 70 member Band under the direction of Wayne Pegram. Among the six pieces they performed was Jesus Christ Super Star. “Southwestern Singers” The Southwestern Singers hale from Memphis Southwestern. The group con- sisted of about twenty men and women. Their speciality was in the area of Folk music and they preformed for our West School. Don Q. Pullen t “Encounter” — Two Rivers Baptis DOUGHNUTS i. The Brunch Shop was set up to provide morning nourishment for students who arrived early by bus or missed breakfast at home. Much skepticism was expressed by the school’s advisors, but through hard-working students like Pam Rutherford, the Brunch Shop spon- ser, Project Brunch was soon on its successful way that other schools have adopted and developed this useful enterprise. During the three days of the festival an art exhibit containing oil paint- ings, pen and ink sketches, photography, pottery, and other types of graphic arts was displayed in the lower level of the Learning Center. The Jazz-Rock Ensemble performed Friday night. The highlight of their presentation was the theme from ‘‘Shaft.”’ Following this performance, the Media Department presented two McGavock student-made films, ‘Gum’ and ‘‘Reunion.” The next night a group of drama students who call themselves ‘Theater of the Mind’ presented ex- cerpts from the ‘Book of Job’ and from ‘‘Bald Soprano.” In addition, the group gave a musical comedy performance called “Follies.” Sunday afternoon the Madrigals performed a_pro- gram of 16th century music for which they received a standing ovation. 416 417 pe eer lle i oa tne ono Goodbye McGavock Goodbye Driver’s Education c war see OY J ae) S ce en ve Se ell rane aires all ‘ica McGavock Party at the Lake McGavock’s New Picnic Tables Are the Spring Place to Eat 437 fv a Ses s = ate e i f a A: -§ ee ee Ki te - NN. if ay ANY ae re Pe “s es a eS s Dy. As the first year of McGavock High School comes to a close, it seems impossible that so many obstacles have been overcome. When we started our school year in Septem- ber of ‘71, our building wasn’t completely finished and we had about 2700 students most of whom came from Cameron, Donelson, and Two Rivers High Schools. We had no student body officers, or class officers, or annual staff or student leaders of any kind. The end of September brought about the selection of the annual staff and our long and hard job began. We the members of the staff have tried to do our very best in giving you a book of experiences and memories that we hope you will look back on with fondness and remember that you were a part of the beginning of the most fantastic school in the South. This book is not the effort of just a few but is the WORK of the entire staff of 38 members plus our two competent sponsors Miss Judy Fitzpatrick and Miss Wanda Smith without whose help this book would not have been pos- sible. Because of the lack of space I cannot mention each staff member by name but each one had a job to do and everyone came through with a job well done. | would like to give a special thanks to my two co-editors Cheryl Hendricks and Edna Thomas. Without their help my hours would have been longer and more hectic. We the staff members had our moments of trials and tribulations trying to meet those awful deadlines, mixed with a few tears of heartache and exhaustion, but we have come through this the best of friends and | wouldn’t trade months of hard work with anyone. There are many other people outside of the staff who deserve a special thank you! We appreciate the teachers who were so understanding about letting us miss class, Mrs. Davis for handling our money, our many photographers and a special thanks to Mr. LaFever for his guidance and cooperation. But most of all we want to thank you, the student body, in putting your trust and faith in our 1971-72 staff and especially do we appreciate your patience and acceptance of our new ideas of an annual covering the entire school year. It is our hope that even though McGavock High started its first year with what seemed like unsurmountable ob- stacles, we have overcome each one and have built a strong foundation for a really great school. We have started off our beginning with many trophies in every field and I think we can be proud to say we are members or graduates of McGavock High School.
