The students of McEwen High School have always been proud of Athena, Oregon and the people in and around Athena who have supported McEwen. It takes many things to make a small school like McEwen work, but the most important thing is the enthusiastic sup- port of the people of the school district. The students of McEwen have always had this support, and they are grateful. A High School should be more than a building, some stu- dents, and a few teachers. McEwen is more. A High School should develop an image, a soul, and a special spirit, and McEwen has developed these, but the spirit of the school is not just the building, the students, or the faculty alone. The Image-Soul-Spirit of a school comes from the people of the school district, and the McEwen Students are grateful for the attitudes of their people. 4

Charles Simpson The annual staff of the 1973 Bagpipes is very proud to dedi- cate this annual to Mr. Charles Simpson. Mr. Simpson has been all that any student body could ask for as a superintendent; but even more he has been our friend. Mr. Simpson, thank you, for your years of service, for your guidance, and for being yourself. You were the first superintendent that McEwen had, and over the years you have become McEwen. As you retire this year, you will not be forgotten. You will always be an important part of McEwen High School, and a very good memory in the minds of the hun- freds of students you have taught and in the minds of all who have been on your staff.  McEwen High School has always tried to offer its students a well-rounded education, activities for all students, and a sports program second to none. Through the years, McEwen High School and its students have earned a reputation throughout the state that the residents of School District 29-R can be proud of. McEwen s academic program has proved varied, and a very large percentage of McEwen's students have gone on to colleges and universities and graduated. In the realm of activities, McEwen's Highland Lassies are well-known and well-loved wherever they appear. The M-Club, FFA, and FHA are active organizations, working for their school. McEwen's Spanish Club is one of the best, and their three week tour of Mexico is a dream come true for many students. In Sports, McEwen has been one of the leaders for years. McEwen's basketball teams are con- sistently at the district and state tournaments. McEwen s football team has winning seasons, and McEwen sends athletes in track to state. McEwen has met it's goal to provide a well- rounded and meaningful school for the parents and citizens of the community and the student body of McEwen. McEwen will continue to meet it's goal. 5
