Academics McEwen High School has always tried to offer a wide and varied curriculum that would meet the needs of the individual student. In an age when some of the emphasis has shifted from the college to the non-college bound student, McEwen has tried to offer students what they want as well as what they need. The English program at McEwen offers 20 different one-semester English courses in three general areas: Language, communication and Literature. The English courses are changed each year upon student demand with their choices running from Science Fic- tion to Great Plays and Novels, from Folklore of the American Indian to Shakespeare, from Vocabulary and Spelling to Creative Writing. McEwen s Math and Science program has attempted to give the students a wide range of courses to meet the different levels of ability and interest. There are 11 courses offered in Science and Math, and the cours- es change from year to year. A student may work his way through Math Analysis or through Consumer Math. A student may stick to General Science and Biology or work through Chemistry and Physics. The Foreign Language Dept., at McEwen has been very successful in the last few years. Four years of Spanish are offered, and every other year the Spanish Club takes a three week trip to Mexico. In Business, 7 courses are offered to prepare the student for a later occupation. Courses range from Recordkeeping to Bookkeeping to Typing I to Office Practices. Business Law is offered to prepare stu- dents for the world of work.

Academics The Home Economics Department offers Freshmen and Sophomore Home Ec., and 2 - one semester courses. Course titles run from Clothing to Family Planning. Art is offered on a semester basis with an introduc- tion to Art History and then work in individual inter- est areas. Agriculture is an important course at McEwen with 4 years of Ag., being offered. Shop is offered two years, and Jr. and Sr. students may enroll in work experience for two hours a day and work in one of the community's businesses. McEwen High School is proud of it's band and the girls who take part in the Highland Lassies. McEwen also boasts of a stage band, a chorus and the Scottie Mac Singers. Important in any school and very important at McEwen is our Social Studies Program. Our goals are to produce students that understand their govern- ment, their history, and their society. McEwen hopes to produce students that will work to improve our community, state and nation. We are proud of McEwen alumni. McEwen High School is not a large school, and it does not have a large faculty; but our students are proud of their school, and our faculty has a deep com- mitment to our student body. We at McEwen feel that the McEwen system works. 11
