Mr. Simpson has been all that any student body could ask for as a superintendent; but even more he has been our friend. Mr. Simpson, thank you, for your years of service, for your guidance, and for being yourself. You were the first superintendent that McEwen had, and over the years you have become McEwen. As you retire this year, you will not be forgotten. You will always be an important part of McEwen High School, and a very good memory in the minds of the hun- freds of students you have taught and in the minds of all who have been on your staff. Thank you Mr. Simpson. F 3 The students of McEwen High School have always been proud of Athena, Oregon and the people in and around Athena who have supported McEwen. It takes many things to make a small school like McEwen work, but the most important thing is the enthusiastic sup- port of the people of the school district. The students of McEwen have always had this support, and they are grateful. A High School should be more than a building, some stu- dents, and a few teachers. McEwen is more. A High School should develop an image, a soul, and a special spirit, and McEwen has developed these, but the spirit of the school is not just the building, the students, or the faculty alone. The Image-Soul-Spirit of a school comes from the people of the school district, and the McEwen Students are grateful for the attitudes of their people. 4 McEwen High School has always tried to offer its students a well-rounded education, activities for all students, and a sports program second to none. Through the years, McEwen High School and its students have earned a reputation throughout the state that the residents of School District 29-R can be proud of. McEwen s academic program has proved varied, and a very large percentage of McEwen's students have gone on to colleges and universities and graduated. In the realm of activities, McEwen's Highland Lassies are well-known and well-loved wherever they appear. The M-Club, FFA, and FHA are active organizations, working for their school. McEwen's Spanish Club is one of the best, and their three week tour of Mexico is a dream come true for many students. In Sports, McEwen has been one of the leaders for years. McEwen's basketball teams are con- sistently at the district and state tournaments. McEwen s football team has winning seasons, and McEwen sends athletes in track to state. McEwen has met it's goal to provide a well- rounded and meaningful school for the parents and citizens of the community and the student body of McEwen. McEwen will continue to meet it's goal. 5 SCHOOL BOARD School Hoard Member Ted Meinhart High School Secretary Darline Bannister School Hoard Member Hob Bannister School Hoard Member Bill Zerba School Hoard Member Gene Baker School Hoard Member Dale Phillips Student Body Officers Sitting left to right, Dick Kendall-President, and Levi Patterson-Sergeant at Arms. In an age when some of the emphasis has shifted from the college to the non-college bound student, McEwen has tried to offer students what they want as well as what they need. The English program at McEwen offers 20 different one-semester English courses in three general areas: Language, communication and Literature. The English courses are changed each year upon student demand with their choices running from Science Fic- tion to Great Plays and Novels, from Folklore of the American Indian to Shakespeare, from Vocabulary and Spelling to Creative Writing. McEwen s Math and Science program has attempted to give the students a wide range of courses to meet the different levels of ability and interest. There are 11 courses offered in Science and Math, and the cours- es change from year to year. A student may work his way through Math Analysis or through Consumer Math. A student may stick to General Science and Biology or work through Chemistry and Physics. The Foreign Language Dept., at McEwen has been very successful in the last few years. Four years of Spanish are offered, and every other year the Spanish Club takes a three week trip to Mexico. In Business, 7 courses are offered to prepare the student for a later occupation. Courses range from Recordkeeping to Bookkeeping to Typing I to Office Practices. Business Law is offered to prepare stu- dents for the world of work. Academics The Home Economics Department offers Freshmen and Sophomore Home Ec., and 2 - one semester courses. Course titles run from Clothing to Family Planning. Art is offered on a semester basis with an introduc- tion to Art History and then work in individual inter- est areas. Agriculture is an important course at McEwen with 4 years of Ag., being offered. Shop is offered two years, and Jr. and Sr. students may enroll in work experience for two hours a day and work in one of the community's businesses. McEwen High School is proud of it's band and the girls who take part in the Highland Lassies. McEwen also boasts of a stage band, a chorus and the Scottie Mac Singers. Important in any school and very important at McEwen is our Social Studies Program. Our goals are to produce students that understand their govern- ment, their history, and their society. McEwen hopes to produce students that will work to improve our community, state and nation. We are proud of McEwen alumni. McEwen High School is not a large school, and it does not have a large faculty; but our students are proud of their school, and our faculty has a deep com- mitment to our student body. We at McEwen feel that the McEwen system works. 11 Student Council Left to Right: Dick Kendall - President, Dick Duncan, Joy Hysell, David Queampts, Greg Malone, Lori Picard, Mark Rees, Sally Baker, Leon Warner, Levi Patterson, Terrie Meinhart, Gayle Munck, Ross Meinhart, John Adams, Kurt Koepke. 12 Freshmen Class Officers: Left to right: Dave Quaempts, Pres., Terry Sheldon, Vice-Pres., Angela Villanueva, Sec. Seriously the ten students who participated this year got a lot out of it. They did come close to winning at the televised game which says a lot for them. 47 Even after defeat, Gary’s still friendly. The 1972 Scottie football team gave a pleas- ant surprise to the coaching staff by rolling to a 7-2 record with one of the lightest teams that the Scots have had in recent years. The performance of many of our Juniors led by Jay Johnson, Ross Meinhart, Tony Villanueva, Leon Warner, Kurt Koepke, John Mathwich, Ross Lieuallen, and Keley Dormaier, was a main factor in the Scots finishing with a 10th Following a 9-0 season in 1971, no one ex- pected this team to perform as well as they did after losing so many key seniors from the pre- vious year. Many performers were among the leaders in the state this year. Ross Meinhart ranked 1st in pass receptions, Tony Villanueva 1st in passing, Dean Wilson 2nd in pass recep- tions, Dick Kendall 4th in scoring, Ross Lieuallen 4th in punting and Levi Patterson 10th in tackles. The Seniors performed exceptionally well, with all five of them, Dave Cannon, Greg Malone, Dick Kendall, Levi Patterson, and Dean Wilson, showing great leadership ability in guiding the team this year. Sophomores John Adams, Kelly Allen, Sheldon King, Allen Johns, Tim Meinhart, Mark Half moon, John Beamer, and Freshman Brad Montee and Gary Munck, showed great potential for future Scottie teams. It was a very enjoyable year from a coaching standpoint—to be able to work with this fine group of young individuals and to be able to share in their success and disappointments and to see them strive to do their best at all times. The coaches are very proud of the 1972 Scotties. Basketball 1 972-73 The 1973 Scotties compiled one of the most impressive basketball records ever at McEwen. The Scots won the- Columbia Basin Conference, the Region 3 Tournament, and went on to finish 3rd in state with an overall record of 24 wins and 2 losses. These 2 losses were at the hands of Condon (63-62) and to the class A” state champions. Enter- prise (81-67). Winning games and championships does not always give a true picture of a basketball team. The members of this particular team possessed many of the most important characteristics desirable in any team sport. This group of boys had a tremendous amount of teamwork. They main- tained good attitudes, worked hard, and were willing to make personal sacrifices for the benefit of the team. There were no individual stars on the Scottie team-only 11 good ball players who worked hard for the success that they achieved. If a team wins every game but does not have or does not demonstrate good sportsmanship, then their season has been a failure. But when a team can accomplish what the mem- bers of the McEwen team did without receiving a technical foul and barely losing the sportsmanship trophy in the state tournament, then it is a great tribute to these boys as good athletes and good citizens. However, we lacked experience in many events. Tills was indicated by the fact that there was only one senior on the track team. There will be five juniors, six sophomores and five freshmen returning for next year, and with the experience gained this year, we should be comperative for the 1974 track season. We had some disappointments during the sea- son, but overall, many individuals bettered their personal records. The 1973 track season was finished by quali- fying four men for the state track meet. Tony Villanueva in the discus, John Adams in the high jump, Jay Johnson in the 100 yard dash and Ross Meinhart in the 880. Congratulations to these four and others on the track for a fine showing. Coach Villanueva’s Comments This year’s baseball posted a record of 18 wins and 10 losses in winning the Columbia Basin East Con- ference, They lost the district playoff game by a score of 4-2 in a well played game. With only one senior on the team, next year's group should be an experienced group. Leading the team in hitting was Tony Villanueva with a .493 average a new record. Dean Wilson batted .396 and Ross Meinhart .394. Ross Meinhart scored 25 runs also a new record. Eight doubles and 3 home runs by Tony were also new records. Leon Warner broke the record with 19 stolen bases. In pitching Tony tied the record with 9 victories and set a new ERA average of 1.06. Alan Quaempts posted 5 victories with 16 shutouts in the Stanfield game. All-Conference selections were Ross Meinhart-catcher, Tony Villanueva-pitcher, Dean Wilson-shortstop and Leon Warner-outfield. 67 Sports Banquet Miss Ferhenbacher honored Audrey Christenson, Irene Hodgson, Patty Bronson and Terrle Meinhart as the Volley- ball All-Stars for the 1972-73 season.
