High Q Bowl McEwen students showed much interest in High School Bowl this year. Six teams were formed from among the four classes, and two intramural tour- naments were held. Those students showing the most aptitude will be chosen for an all-school team. The all-school team will appear on TV from a Spokane station in competition with another school from the Inland Empire area late in the spring. Mrs. Woodroofe is the coach for this activity. However, knowing that this year was their final year of competition, many of them performed as they never had be- fore. The result being the best won-lost record in the schools history, losing only the final game to a highly rated Washington school Riverview, by a 14-16 score with three injured Scottie regulars on the sideline. The 1970 football team could be called the year of the “Hitters”, since the dominant characteristic of the team was a tre- mendous defense. Many individual records were set and as a team, de- fense ly, only two schools were able to score more than once against the Scots. The tremendous pride and competition among the defensive stal- warts comprised of Doug Hinkins, Jack Ingram, Gary Irving, Craig McMillan, Bill Mobley, Chris Sheard, Butch Clark, Levi Patterson, Greg Malone and Mark Johnson made running and passing against the Scots a difficult thing to do. Offensively the Scots averaged 27 points a game led by George Kaup, Doug Beamer, Loren Bebb, Sterling Allen, David Bates, Dick Davis, Doug Scott, Jim Ward, Dick Kendall and those mentioned above. With Pride and the belief in each other, the Scots did the job! JU4 With power-ball being played now on the high school level, we find volleyball to be a real challenge. Volleyball required determination, drive, and movement. The girls worked hard and have laid a good founda- tion for future years. They had to learn a new technique in playing this year. Girls’ Basketball this year was an activity that didn’t really get started. With only a few games and conflicts with boys’ basketball, there was time for very little practice. Miss Fehrenbackcr SPORTS “We had a very enjoyable season with basically a senior-freshman team. The team was able to win 21 of 33 game and was led by the solid play of many, and the timely hitting of Sterling Allen, Chris Sheard, and Doug Beamer. Mike Hinkle and George Kaup pitched well during the year.” Coach Villanueva We started the season very slowly, but as the season progressed, we began to see improvement in several of our players and our team as a whole. We finished third in our league behind Pilot Rock and Heppner, which gave us a play off berth in the Regional Tournament at the Dalles. In the first game of regionals, we squeaked out a 51-50 victory over Culver. The next night we met Pilot Rock, and even though we lost the game 65-62 after leading them for 3 l 2 quarters, we probably played our best game of the year, with everybody giving it 100%. The next night the Scotties came back and defeated Condon 67-62 for third place. Our overall season record was 16 wins and 9 losses. Of our nine losses, five were by one point and three of our losses were to Pilot Rock, who won second place in the state A tournament. Taking all factors into consideration, I feel that we had a very suc- cessful season...........Coach Ferguson The McEwen Thinclads finished the 1971 season with five boys qual- ified for the state meet. Doug Hinkins qualified in the javelin and shot put. He broke the existing state javelin record. David Bates qualified in the long jump and ran the anchor leg of the mile relay team. Other members who qualified for the state meet and members of the mile re- lay team were George Kaup, Doug Beamer, and Gary Irving. Many fine performances were turned in during the season with the Freshmen filling the holes and doing an exceptional job. Mr. Snodgrass K This years tennis team showed marked improvement with matches won in girls first and second doubles, and boys first and second singles. In several years we hope that our tennis league will be divided up so that the small schools will compete only among themselves. Scots Edge Condon, 8-6 ATHENA (Special) — Quar- terback George Kaup’s three- yard, extra point sprint follow- ing halfback David Bates’ three-yard touchdown plunge proved to be the difference here Saturday afternoon as McEwen edged Condon 8-6 in a non-league football game. The touchdown and PAT provided the Scots with an 8-0 advantage at that point, but the visitors came back for a six-pointer later in the second quarter on an 80-yard aerial from Don Morgan to split end Tim Prior. But the Eagles were unable to add the two-point conversion, and that’s the way the game ended. The McEwen Defense — especially the front wall of Doug Hinkins. Chris Sheard and Bill Mobley—made the difference for McEwen in the second half Linebacker Craig McMillen and ends Butch Clark and Loren Bebb also turned in superb defensive efforts. Vb cincoiely thank than fc® t. ilr strong support of our school end annual. We greatly appreciate the support given ua by all our sponsors Each day is a link in the chain of your life. Each second, minute, and hour speeds by and history is recorded. During the past year, many decisions had to be made by you— some good, some bad. You will get the results. We have made many friends in the 1970-71 school year. Some we will keep for the rest of our lives. But we must move on, advance toward new knowledge and new friendships. As we think back on the past year, we can remember the joy of winning and the hurt of losing, the rap sessions and the spirit. The seniors will remember the last class bell sounding and the finality of graduation. The BAGPIPES has recorded the history of McEwen High School 1970-71, a history that involves each one of us. To McEwen High we say “Long may your bells ring”. But now we will close this book and you will start on the next volume of your life. May you always remember 1970-71 as a strong link in your chain of life. 80 e sg SKe
