1962 Bagpipes McSwen Migk School A them, Oregon McSwen Migh foreword Perfection, beauty, regality - qualities for which every student wishes his Alma Mater to stand. McEwen High School has long been a top school, known and loved by many students. In more recent years, admiration has rapidly increased with our growing school, a school striving to attain a goal. Today, we may stand aside, and with one satisfying glance, be convinced that McEwen High has reached this goal - the attainment of which has brought with it those very qualities that students yearn to claim. With progress comes perfection could well be the motto of McEwen. The mighty Scotties have a large, modern gymnasium to host visiting teams. The splendid loca- tion of M. H. S. has also led to its progress. The science department and the library have contributed greatly to the completeness of the school. Thus is indicated the per- fection that has accompanied the progress of McEwen High. Webster defines beauty as the quality which gratifies the eye. Such a definition is certainly representative of our school. It has been said the beauty is as beauty does - and M. H. S. is very definitely beautiful in both appearance and individuality. Last, but far not least, a feeling of regality reigns supreme over the campus of McEwen. Whether one be a student of yesteryear or one of today, a feeling of pride is always with him when he contem- plates his splendid school. Perfection, beauty, regality - these belong to McEwen High - this is our Alma Mater. Lela, a citizen of Oregon’s Girls' State, is an active member in church, and also was Worthy Advisor of Rainbow. A member of the prom court in both 1961 and 1962, Lela plans to continue her education at Oregon State University in Corvallis. Salutatorlan Koliada Graduating with a 3. 3 GPA, Rolinda Morrison received the honor of salutatoriam She has re- mained active while at McEwen by participating in Thespians, Glee Club, Torch Honor, and Girls' League. Rolinda moved to Vancouver, Washington, in her junior year, but came back to McEwen to complete the final semester of school. As an active member of church, Rolinda will attend college at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Lela Lieuallen, will to Linda Rand my faithful snare drum and sticks so that she, too. may be worth her weight in gold. I, Peggy Funk, will my little black book with phone numbers to Jeanne Remillard to use in her future years as a career girl. I, Ron Myers, will my height to Dick McMillan who I’m sure could use it. I, Jim Blackwell, will my ability to agree with everyone to Bill Hansell who would probably choke before admitting he was wrong. I, Sharon Schneider, will my great ability to talk all the time to Gary Roden who is always quiet. I, Joyce Ledgerwood, will my ability to get along with a certain boy to Daryle Van Wagner who seems to be having trouble. I, Casey Rushing, will my long hair to Joy Ashcroft who hasn’t had a hair cut for two months and it still isn't long enough to cut. I, Rolinda Morrison, will my ability to catch Algebra the first time around to Kathy Rand who seems to have anti-Algebra bubble around her head. 1962 Prophecy The Class of '62 was always considered very deep - therefore, it is not surprising to find that after 20 years they are really living off the deep end. Alan Coppock has been doing a great deal of undersea farming since all but 10°]o of his dry farmland has been placed in the soil bank. Alan finds underwater farming a bit more difficult but at least there is no dust, rust or drought to put up with down there. Not far from Alan's ranch, Harold Youncs is operating the ocean's largest mining company. Harold special- izes in anything that can be dug out of the ocean's bottom. Harold’s private secretary, Joyce Ledger- wood, said she finds this ocean mining just fascinating. Everything can be mined on the ocean floor she tells us and, although she is interested in the iron, gold, and oil, she still likes diamonds best. David Case has a successful business on the ocean floor, also. He goes around on his motor scooter collecting fish eggs marketed under the label Homogenized Caviar. To make David's egg collecting possible, Frank Carstens has designed a new air pressure system for the motor scooter as well as a periscope, which prevents David from causing an international incident by scooping up eggs on foreign territory by mistake. Jim Blackwell is working on the training of octopi which make very fine pets. Having always felt that additional arms would be a distinct asset to any young man, Jim regrets that he didn't begin this project 20 years sooner. A near tragedy was averted when after being swallowed by a large whale Sharon Schnei- der caused the whale such a case of indigestion she was quickly cast up on the Continental Shelf. Said Sharon, I may be on the shelf, but I proved something, I think. Peggy Funk has had much reason to be thankful for the music training at McEwen Hi, for she now directs a fish chorus. Peggy says it made her feel a little silly teaching do re me” to a bunch of mackerel, but she gets a great deal of satisfaction from her fishy act - the Squid Squirm. The great scientific observer Rolinda Morrison, has been employed by the Friends of Frustrated Fish Club to give lectures on how to protect man's best underwater friend. Her latest lecture was How to Keep Fish From Becoming Neurotic. Beverly McMillan, carrying on childhood hobbies, experiments in making mud pies in the briny deep. She says, If you really want a mud you can get the feel of, try the white calcareous ooze of the Carribean, which gives you all the pleasures of mud pie making without all of the color that sticks to your fingers. No one has heard how Casey Rushing's Top Secret underwater experiments have turned out, but rumors have it that he was seen rushing down about 10 fathoms trying to look like Mike Nelson and being chased by a school of mermaids. Casey has had trouble of this sort for many years and still he wonders, Why, oh why, can't the girls resist me? The nautical career of Denny Widener began right after high school when he joined the Navy, where he spent so much time hanging over the side of the ship. Upon his discharge from the Navy he joined the Underwater Observation Unit and now he spends his time looking up at the bottom of ships that pass overhead. All of the vehicles used in transportation on the oceanbottom have created quite a business for Ron Myers which he calls Ron's Rapid and Radical Repair Shop. Ron says that if these young hot rodders would just realize they were traveling in salt water instead of just plain old atmosphere maybe they would stop eeling around and salting up their motors. Lela Lieuallen, who is going about in the backward areas of Upper Manhatten and Backley, Boston, is teaching people how to prepare a delicious seaweed and snail casserole. Lela, a home economist, is employed by the Underseas Develop- ment Company. With such great food shortages on earth, Lela says that hunger is completely unneces- sary if the housewives will fry a little algae and chew blubber. After finishing the complete course at McEwen, the Class of '62 felt they had much to give the world and since no one on land would accept their contribution they did not hesitate to go right on to the lower levels where they became a success. Says Mr. Simpson, the former advisor of this famous class, Nothing has given me as much satisfaction as my association with this vital and stimulating class. Why, they made everyone want to go off the deep end.
