Class Prophecy (With apologies to Abe Lincoln) Two score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new generation, conceived in great hopes and expectations, and educated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great tabulation, checking whether that generation, or any generation so conceived and so educated (?) can truly succeed. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. For in a true sense they did not abdicate - they did not desecrate - they did not horse around in this world. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here; but it can never forget what they are doing here. The brave students, living and lively, who struggled here have advanced it far above our poor power to add or detract. The prides of McEwen High have become peerless powers abroad. Marla Brown is raising cane” in Cuba. Dave Hesp took McEwen traditions so seriously that he has just been crowned king of Scotland. Hurrah for the Scotties! George Ellis, after running a hot dog stand in Siberia, is lost in Jerusalem. Larry Whitney, noted scientist, is almost to dis- cover the missing link, ” but will have to find his contact lens first. Gary Goss is a missionary to the alley cats of London. Donna Callaway, a beauty specialist, developed an unkinked curl for the natives of the African jungles. Her customers buy Pale Peroxide” from Terry McMillan who discovered this formula and sells it by the fifth. Jay Moore is head coach at Tokyo U. - coaxing Geisha girls. Barbara Pinkerton is employed by the Winter Olympics Association as a private secretary - the next meet will be held in the Himalaya Mountains. Fred Baker is in charge of slum clearance in Iceland - Igloo Construction Co. Don Harris is rushing around in Russia, teaching young Communists how to exhibit reindeer. Janice Chase is singing the title role of Salome in the Paris Opera House. George Hays, an accountant for the United Nations, has been assigned to count the Mongoloids in Mongolia. Bill Read has amassed a fortune selling couches to successful psychiatrists, one of whom is Steve Hodgen, M.D., Ph.D., andB.V.D. Steve is psychoanalyzing the crazy, mixed-up Chinese. Harry Brown let off so much steam in the National Guard that he was promoted to West Point. Karol Moore is teaching South Sea island cannibals how to put their hearts into homemaking (instead of into human stew). Dale Hauff majored in engineering and is attempting to build bridges across the Pacific Ocean. Janet Johnson volunteered to be the first woman to be shot into outer space - she's still out, man, still way out! It is for you, the remaining, now to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who were graduated here in 1960 have thus far so nobly advanced. It is now for you to be here dedi- cated to the great task remaining before you - that from this honored class you take increased devotion to the world cause for which they are giving their full measure of devotion - that you here highly resolve that these students shall not have studied in vain - that this generation shall have continued success - and that education of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.
