fORGWORd Dear Friends, When we begin school we are like glowing embers, which have been made to glow by the training we have received from our parents at home, our community, and our church. Each day in school we have a goal that we may either reach or leave be- hind. Some of the glowing embers may reach their goal and burn on to a higher one and others may bum out and become cinders. It is up to each individual to use his training and improve his leadership, scholarship, service, and character to add brightness to his ember. Through this book may you be able to see the progress of each student as he achieves his goals. In closing I would like to thank the Bagpipe's staff and advisor for the co- operation they have given to me and to the faculty and friends who have helped us in every way possible. Sincerely yours. We would like to mention some of the offices and appointments that the members of this class have held-the Editors of the Annual and Newspaper, Student Body President, Secretaries, Treasurer, Football and Basketball Captains, Majorettes, and Cheerleaders, who started the Cheerleader Work- shop. They have held offices all four years in G.A.A., Pep Band, Lettermans Club, F. F.A., Band, and Classes. A number of these students have entered speech contests in which they have gone to state to compete. For three years the class has given school plays. A major achievement of which the class is very proud is the high grade point average the class has maintained. Outside of school we have many honored students who have been Girls State Delegates, Delegates to State and National F.F.A. Conventions, Umatilla Fair Court Princess, Pea Festival Princess, United Nations Delegate, Queen and Princesses of Junior Prom, and F.F.A. Sweethearts. The majority of the class are active in Church and Civic Affairs. We congratulate the Class of 1957 and wish you success in your future years. H. Simpson, Velton Read, Wilbur Harden, Ray Blaylock, Lowell Garretson, Stafford Hansell, and Maurice Johns. The Quarterback Clubs’ main objective is to help in school athletics, both in grade school and high school, and in school activities. The Club is composed of men in the area who wish to partici- pate in helping the schools whenever and wherever possible. Some of their activities have included improving the school as in evidence by McEwen’s front walk, the curb around the school building, and our athletic field. One of their projects this year is a new concrete and iron backstop and baseball dugout. During the past few summers, the Club has organized a recreational program consisting of Little League Baseball in the morning and swimming in the afternoon. They also helped in selling season swimming tickets in order that the pool could support itself. Although they are not doing as much as they would like to do this year, they have been a con- siderable help. We owe a lot to the Quarterback Club and we hope that they will continue their fine work. Let the doubt of this will be never, as it hangs in the halls of McEwen forever. class ppophecy There are many lands from here to heaven but only Seniorland will be made of the class of fifty-seven. Eleven years from now in nineteen hundred and sixty-eight This you might see as the hand of fate. As we walk down Future Ambition Street, It's LeRoy Timmermann whom we first meet Who rules as Admiral of The Bath Tub Fleet. 'Tis Kenny Knight whom next we met who is known in this land as the barnyard vet. Among those in the class who really rates Is great old Gary the Gunnersmate. As we walk on down to the edge of town. We see Charles Betts plowing his ground. While over the hill removing a tick, We see the hick known as sheepherder Dick. While on the way back, the school house we pass And see Miss Joan teaching her class. On a bill board we noticed a harry old villian, A master piece painted by the great Linda McMillan. Martha, the gal who has always had nerve Is now commander of the naval reserve. As we pass the building that houses the press We see Josie in the midst of a mess. Next we see Gail the old lady of the shoe Who has so many children she doesn't know what to do. Not only is Ronna teaching business in school But is having a ball chasing men as a rule. Professor McEwen of the Foreign Exchange Didn't get to travel 'cuz she ran out of change. To end the history of this class prophecy We see Janet, head chemist, of a famous laboratory. class motto class colors CLASS flOWCR He that builds beneath the stars builds too low. Football season saw the girls leading the rousting cheers in white Bermuda shorts contrasting their red sweaters and knee-length socks. Basketball time produced new pleated wool skirts in the traditional colors of cardinal red and silver grey. New chants and yells made a bevy of noise sup- porting McEwen Scotties every inch of the way. Betty Funk, Wilma McMillan and Shireen Simpson, from the Junior class, and Linda Myrick, a Senior held over from last year, have expressed the idea to encourage good sportsmanship and better relations between schools. The four yell queens added to their efforts a second event of the yell queens’ workshop, which is hoped to become an annual session. bouncy BETTY FUNK Junior spirited WILMA MC MILLAN Junior peppy SHIREEN SIMPSON Junior snappy LINDA MYRICK Senior fOOtBALL FRONT ROW: Dean Whiteley, Charles Betts, Leroy Timmermann, Dick Coppeck, Dorn Baumiester, Harry Brown, Jerry Chase, Larry Whitney, SECOND ROW: Ted Bear, Tom Moore, George May, Ken Knight, Jim Lieuallen, Don Baumiester, Paul Rice. They have shown good sportsmanship throughout the season. Much of the credit is given to Coach A1 Starns and Assistant Coach Jack Chapman, who has helped make the team what it is. The final accounting revealed that the Scotties played a total of eight games during the season. The loss of four seniors will be felt very much, but we are looking forward to the group of boys that will be back in the line-up next fall. fOOtBAll action LEFT TO RIGHT: Dick Coppock, Dean Whiteley, Paul Rice, Kenny Knight, Gary Garretson, Ted Bear, Jim Lieuallen, Larry Brown. CENTER: Charles Betts. varsity A fighting bunch of boys composed of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, represented Mc- Ewen High School during the basketball season of 1956-1957. Although they did not have a great season as far as wins and losses go they had great spirit and sportsmanship. The three seniors will be lost to the starting five next year and missed very much. The other two members will be back and all but one of the reserves and men from the B squad. They feel that the experience gained this year will put them back in the running for 1958. Reach Scotties Reach Jumping High At a Stand Still senioRS The Scotties salute the McEwen High School basketball team and the four seniors that have played their last basketball for the Scotties. These seniors have played a brand of ball and have displayed such a degree of sportsmanship that they will remain an example for McEwen in the future. Whenever these seniors were called up to play they played for all they were worth to the best of their ability regardless of what the outcome of the game. Practices were held on Tues- day and Thursday evenings. Games were played with Echo, Weston, Umapine, and Helix. Since only three members of the team were seniors there will be five members coming back next year. Mrs. Annabelle Lewis, who is the coach, has done a swell job teaching the girls new points. The reason was that no other schools in our league had a B volleyball squad. If it weren’t for the 'B” team squad the “ A” team could not have material available to practice against. The team will provide players that will be much help to the “A” team in the coming years.
