p . A freshman's first view. The love of fighting for victory. The kindling of school spirit and team courage. The workbench for modeling future greats. Relaxing from the week's hard grind. A new generation on wheels. To express our appreciation and thanks to Mr. Dan Garner, we would like to dedicate the 1956 Bagpipes to him. Without him our annuals, plays, and newspapers would not have existed. He has not only taught us a sense of value of English and Literature, but he has taken his time to help us on out- side activities and has been everyone's personal friend. The halls of McEwen won't be the same next year without him, and we wish him all the success and happiness in the years to come, for he certainly deserves it. Larry Coppock, Student Body President C. The Club is composed of town men who wish to par- ticipate in helping the schools whenever and wherever possible. Some of their activities have included improving the school as in evidence by McEwens front walk, the curb around the school building, and our athletic field. Last spring the Club fixed a backstop on the telephone poles behind the catchers box for the baseball season. Last fall they bought tickets for the football players to the Pendleton-Washington football game. During the past few summers, the Club has organized a Recreational program consisting of Little League Baseball in the morning and swimming in the afternoon. They also helped in selling season swimming tickets in order that the pool could support itself. This year the Club helped the F.F.A. pay for their new barn. Although they are not doing as much as they would like to this year, they have been a considerable help. We owe a lot to this Club and we hope that they will continue in their fine work. Cheerleaders We have more librarians this year to handle the growing demands of the student body. More and more students are realizing the importance of a library in meeting the requirements of class assignments. Our audio visual aid department has grown with the addition of a film strip library cabinet, and new screen. Many new books, including a set of Compton's Picture Encyclopedias, have been added to the library. Janet Harris was presented the award for the outstanding librarian during the 1955- 56 school year. McEwen High School Hats Off to Thee The Glee Club consisting of 40 members is under the direction of Mr. Hadley Akins. Our first ap- pearance was at the Grade School Christmas Program. We sang at the Spring Band Concert and later in the spring we sang for Baccalaureate and Graduation. We sing a variety of songs and enjoy singing in the Glee Club. DIRECTOR - Mr. H. One of McEwen's most active F.F.A. members, Larry Coppock, made a marvelous speech, taking 1st at the District and Sectional Speech Contests and 3rd at the State. F.F.A. PARLIAMENTARY TEAM F. F. A. McEwen High should feel proud of our Parliamentary Team this year. They took first in the District and Sectional Contests and third in the State Contest. Results Blue Ribbon Project JUG AND BOTTLE BAND The Jug and Bottle Band is one of the organizations in our school that we should be very proud of. They have played throughout the county for various organizations. The main achievement the Jug and Bottle Band made this year was to take 2nd place in the talent night at the State Contest. Future Farmers of America The McEwen F.F.A. Chapter completed its most successful year in 1955. Besides the honors won in parliamentary procedure and public speaking, chapter members showed con- siderable improvement in their supervised farming programs and the quality of their livestock and crops. Much of the credit for this is due to the new modem feedlot constructed by the boys on property owned by Mr. Simpson. The Quarterback Club helped finance the buildings, which have enabled eleven town boys to fatten livestock. The Athena American Legion Post deserves thanks from everyone for their promotion of the livestock show and sale which en- courages all the F.F.A. members to strive for excellence in livestock production. During the past year, 22 members of the McEwen F.F.A. Chapter owned or financed a total of 32 sheep, 32 hogs, 31 beef, 360 poultry and rabbits, 5 dairy, and 160 acres of crops. This represented a total investment in farming of $9231, and the boys realized a net income of $1814 for their ef- forts. In addition, the chapter has been farming from three to five acres each year and has accumulated $150 worth of farming equipment. Ninety percent of the members exhibited live- stock at one or more shows, and forty percent of the members appeared in some type of program before civic or other groups. Individually, many members gained recognition for both them- selves and their chapter. Larry Coppock received his state farmerdegree, and placed second in the district better farming contest. Dick Coppock was elected district secretary, and the chapter honored Janet Whitacre by electing her as chapter sweetheart. Bill Coppock and Brant- ley Holt received the degree of Honorary Chapter Farmer.
