Membership on the School Board is elective and the members give many long hours of unselfish service for the benefit of McEwen High School. Trouble starts when unwanted trombone playing Professor Randolph arrives at the Baldwin home and announces that he intends to stay the entire summer. He isn't such a bad fellow, but that horrid moan- ing trombone is enough to drive --well it practically did drive Mr. Bald- win into a nervous breakdown the summer before, and he has been away in the mountains ever since, trying to recover. Now he is coming back and wants to find his house peaceful and quiet, and his young attractive daughter, Anne, intends that he shall find it so. That is she thought it would be until the Professor arrived for his second summer! On top of that comes Rush Harris, who brings with him reasons for gray hairs. •6oe «o©oe Iooooooooooo oopooQoooev ®OOGOOOOO0O 0 C.-A.JI. Back Row (1. tor.) Lee Harden. Joan Van Ocker, Donna Huffman. All the girls in McEwen High School are eligible to join the G. A. A. The G. A. A. sponsored the Christmas Party this year. But instead of having a banquet as usual, the girls voted to have a dance with an orchestra. The dance was a huge success. We all got G. A. A. pins this year as none of us have had them before. We help sell the concessions at the basketball games getting, as in other years, one-eighth of the profits. In the spring, some of the girls went to the Tri-State Convention. 1953 Superior Rating The McEwen Concert Band again brought home their laurels in the spring of '53 from LaGrande. For a school of our size, there is no better band in Eastern Oregon. Westward Ho Parade, 1953 It was a hot day for most of us. The other three rode. Remember! Shrine Game in Walla Walla, 1953 There were three formations including the 'Flag1, 'Shrine', and the 'Hospital'. President's Band of France For this we chartered a Greyhound to Portland on a Wednesday night. We returned on Thursday (early). Tri-Community Concerts Performed at McEwen High, Echo, and Umatilla, these concerts were well received. Highland Fling Band rehearsals went awry here for awhile, but the show was a grand success. Tradition For 1953-54, the Annual Concert and end of the year festivities are left. Maybe something big will happen. Hope so! Front Row (1. to r.) The Glee Club started the 1953-54 year with forty-two members. We did not sing at the Grade School Christmas Program this year, because the annual G. A. A. Christmas party was scheduled for the same night. The Glee Club is planning a Spring Concert which will be held in early March. This is the first time anything of this type has been tryed at McEwen. We also plan to sing for Baccalaureate and Graduation again this spring. This will be the last event on our program. 29 Left: Ray Blaylock-Director Right: Lee Harden-President The Pep Band has now completed two successful years. We feel more and more confident that the Pep Band will be a permanent organ- ization here at McEwen. The Pep Band preformed at the football games this fall, at the basket- ball games this winter, and at the B-7 Sub District Tournament at Echo, though we only marched twice. The Pep Band formed an M at the Pilot Rock football game at Athena. At the Pilot Rock basketball game at Athena, the Pep Band formed an M and an R . We used flashlights with red and blue cellophane over them. The Pep Band was under the direction of Mr. Ray Blaylock. Merilee Harden served as president again this year, and Joan Van Ocker was major- ette. We enjoyed providing entertainment this year, and we are looking forward to doing it again next year. cjCettermen Back Row (1. to r.) On the night of November 20, we initiated eleven new lettermen who have enlarged our organization to the total of 20 members. After the initiation, we sponsored a dance and served refreshments for the initiate and the student- body. We, in the Letterman's Club, are supposed to keep order at the basket- ball games; we are especially supposed to keep watch on the grade school youngsters. We put on a skit for the studentbody which everyone enjoyed. For the first time in four years, the Letterman's Club treasury is out of the hole! 31 cudpaper Co-Editors of the Highlander for 1953-54 are Elizabeth Baumeister and Terry Whitacre Front Row (1. to r.) Checking books in and out is one of the many duties of a librarian. They are in charge of the library and in this capacity they must main- tain a studious atmosphere that is common in all well managed libraries. Inculcating interest in fiction as well as research books is a duty that is of major importance. There are two librarians for every period, exclusive of the first three periods. This is done to prevent conflicts in the librarians schedule and to insure as a result, utmost efficiency in serving the students of McEwen High School. Mr. Dan Garner is in charge of the library and the work done by the librarians. During the second nine weeks Janet Harris took Evon Brown's place on the library staff. 33 Darlene Case, Joan Van Ocker, Deanna Whiteley 34 3ut 3. urmerd ure me neu Front Row (1. to r.) The McEwen High School Football team came with a fairly creditable season with two wins and five losses chalked up. This year was a shaping up year and we came out with a very scrappy team. The boys never once let up on the fight- ing whether they were ahead or behind in the score. The team this year was built of mostly inexperienced sophomores with a few experienced juniors and seniors. The back field was always shorthanded because there was always a couple of boys on the injury list. The leading ground gainers this year were Charles Black, Keith Day, and Bob Bannister. Out standing defensive players included Farrin Baker, Bob Carlson, Johnny Moore and Bill Shepard. 37 Sept. 18 0 Touchet 13 Sept. 25- 13 Umatilla 6 Oct. 1 13 Echo 0 Oct. 9 - 20 Pilot Rock 26 Oct. 16 6 Stanfield 13 Oct. 23 12 North Powder 24 Nov. 6 7 lone 43 Total - 71 Total 135 front Row: Left to right, Bob Bannister, Junior Dick, Bob Carlson, Dallas Haverland, Jim Ingalls.
