PHOTOGRAPHS A Y + Sv o.| S x 3 v r« Z v i ci • r e_v e_v SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Nobody really expects much of this year's class. On a recent gallup poll, 90 percent of the male population of the class listed Ditch Digger as their pet, future occupation. Seventy percent of that number desired to live in Dogpatch, and the remainder wanted to reside in Skunk Hollow, all giving as their reason that they wished to be near Tobacco Rhoda, and other friendly characters in that area. Among the girls, 95 percent wished to be old-maid school teachers, and live to the age of 80 before retiring to live in cute little white houses and throw rocks at all children who might pass in that direction. There were a few seniors who listed occupational and social preferences differing from the general run as indicated above. There were also a few who had second choices if they couldn't achieve the desired position. Bill Campbell, for example, said he wouldn't mind joining Big Barnsmell as another inside man at the skonk works. (We wouldn't have said that about him only he didn't turn in a write-up for the annual.) Arthur Teague of course will become a lawyer, as a matter of fact he is already beating a path up and down the alley in back of the jail so that the regular prisoners will get to see him sooner. Carroll Cannon wants to be an editor, so she will undoubtedly wind up editing the paper published at the State Hospital in Pendleton. Connie Harris wanted to be a laboratory worker, but she blew herself up before she reached the age of 25. Ralph Wolford and Raymond Wolford went into the Wildflower business. Ray picks them out on his forest range, and Ralph sells them in town. Lyle Hinkins bought 83,000 acres of rich farmland, but was too lazy to work it and finally died of starvation. Marita will go into Grand Opera, but just at the climax of her career will throw a tantrum, and walk out of the Metoprolitan Opera House, and all the way back ta Athena. Dick Wallingford will reach the top in the architectural field, and will design a new capitol for Oregon. The only trouble will be that Dick will pick the wrong site, and nobody will be able to find it. We find Gib Morrison busy at his job which is seventeenth vice president of the radar controlled, jet propelled, atomic powered yo-yo's. His aim in life is to become sixteenth vice president. Merle Mathwich is now president of the Athena Bank. His job is sitting with his feet propped up on a desk smoking big, black, smelly cigars. Pretty soft! That's natural. He was always the laziest in the class. Darlene Montee is nurse of John D. Rockfeller. At least she says she's his nurse. The only thing we see her doing is holding his hand and singing him lullabys. She always said she wanted to inherit a million dollars. Beverly Tucker has decided to become a great dog lover. She just has invented cn automatic flea catcher and back scratcher for her 23,558 dogs. Harriet Schmidtgall has become a bubble dancer in Portland, Oregon, selling straight pins on the side. She's getting tired of the name Oueenie Smitty and tells us she wants to retire to the farm some day. Frances Baker decided to move to Hansell Mountain and raise peas, wheat and kids. SENIOR CLASS WILL We, the class of '50, being of large and great talent (after four years of high school) and being the first and greatest class to ever graduate from dear McEwen High, leave these thoughts as our final will and testament: TO THE CLASSES We, the Senior Class of 50 , leave to McEwen High our great example to be followed, and a huge list of accomplishments which we guarantee no class will be able to live up to in the future. We leave the Junior Class the ability to become Seniors after three long years of work. To the Sophomore Class we just L-E-A-V-E. We leave to the Freshman Class our ability to get along with the teachers and to receive honor roll grades as we did. TO THE FACULTY We leave to Mr. Simpson a pair of sponge rubber caps for his teeth so he won't chew his fingernails down to the elbow, and a big turkish towel to wipe the sweat off his brow during the close, exciting games our basketball boys play. To Mrs. Butterfield we leave a jet propelled heliocopter so she may com- mute between Athena and wherever Glenn is going to school. We, the Senior students of the Chemestry class, will the pleasent odor of the chemestry room (H-2-S) to Mr. Potter, who will appreciate it. We leave to Mrs. Simpson a set of our class original recipes to sell to the war department for unpredictable explosives. We leave to Mr. Keezel, for his dog, a package of McEwen Chomp Chomp dog food which will give him added sparkle in his bright eyes. We leave to Mr. Hardin some lumber to build a little garage outside of school so he won't have to leave his car in the shop. We leave Mr. Diehl a two foot section of lead pipe to use as a baton, since the ones he had this year couldn't take the punishment. We leave to Ray Blalock a new push broom with a built in Television set and snack bar so he can enjoy himself while he is at work. TO THE STUDENTS I, Connie Harris, will my good disposition to Charlene Wyatt and my ability to get ones without studying to Jimmy Rice. I, Arthur Teague, will my ability to get cheerleaders from out of town for girl friends to Jack Pittman who already has a good start; also my ability to ignore every thing that goes on in Social Economics and still get 1 's to Hamlin Christenson. I, Gibbie Morrison, will my ability to play the trumpet to Glenda Harris. I, Carroll Cannon, hereby will my ability to get a man and loose him to Jo Ann Huffman who already has a good start. I also will my ability to lose thinas and then find them to Sylvia Harden. I, Dick Wallingford, will my parking place in Weston to anyone that wants it. I have a new one. I, Lyle Hinkins, will my ability to have more than one girl in other towns to Jimmy Rice. I, Merle Mathwick, will my big feet to Paul Moore, Jr., who has a real good start at having size 14 or over. I, Beverly Tucker, will my secret to get along with Mr. Diehl to Lois Jean Fuson; also those dagger looks I seem to acquire during band. I. Bill Campbell, will to Paul Moore, Jr., my privilege to sleep in Mr. Diehl's class. He looks tired. I, Harriet Schmidtgall, will my ability to succeed to get afterbeats on my trumpet to Royce Bunch who will need it next year. I, Darlene Montee, hereby will my ability to get straight l's in Social Economics to Betty Swaggart. I also will my tall height to Joyce Maxwell who really needs it. I, Ralph Wolford, Jr., will the privilege of coming from the show-me state to all students left in McEwen High School Student Body—But have your mama not to let you go there? Because it is MISS-OUR-I. I, Frances Baker, will my ability to get a man and keep him to Althea Swaggart who can't seem to get the technique like her sister. I, David Bunch, will my ability to play the trombone to Belva Satterlee. I, Marita Carlson, hereby will my ability to get on the honor roll all four years to anyone who thinks they can do it. I, Raymond Wolford, will my ability to get by in Chemestry to Jim Rice. He'll sure need it. Back Row: Fay Haverland, Hamlin Christensen, Royce Bunch, Earl Burns, Jack Greenlee, Jack Pittman, Kenneth Williams, Mrs. Butterfield, Advisor. CLASS HISTORY At the beginning of the school year the Junior Class consisted of thirteen members. Not long afterward, Rosalie Bissonnett left, so we were leh with twelve members. We elected our class officers at the beginning of the year. The officers elected are as follows: Hamlin Christenson, President; Royce Bunch vice- president; Lois Fuson, secretary and treasurer; Jeanne Haigwood, class re- porter. The Sadie Hawkins dance was sponsoed by the Juniors. We had a good turnout and everyone seemed to have a good time in their Dogpatch costumes. For extra entertainment, we put on a Radio Amateur Hour. The Junior Class sponsored and presented a play to cover expenses for the Prom. Last, but not least, was the traditional Junior-Senior Prom. This was the first Prom at McEwen High and everyone enjoyed the affair. Mrs. Agnes Butterfield has been our class advisor. SOPHOMORE CLASS Left to Right—Front Row: Myrtle Lent, Jo Ann Huffman, Evelyn Packer, Joyce Maxwell. Back Row: Warren Hunt, Jim Rice, Leon Montee, Paul Moore, Jr., Bud Schmidtgall, Mr. Hardin, Advisor. Not Pictured: Norma Satterlee. CLASS HISTORY The Sophomores started their class with ten students this year. We elected officers the first week with the following results: President, Warren Hunt; vice- president, Paul Moore; Secretary-treasurer, Jo Ann Huffman. The Sophomores started the Freshmen off right, with an initiation on September 27th. The Freshmen wore their traditional costumes during the day and at 7:30 that night came to the gym for the final initiation. After this the Sophomores sponsored a mixer for the student body. Most of the Sophomare boys turned out for all sports and are doing very well. The girls all belong to the G. A. A. We have been guided through this successful year by our advisor, Mr. Hardin. FRESHMAN CLASS Left to Right—Back Row: Glenda Harris, Charlene Wiatt. Third Row: Beulah Bissonnett, Deloris Bunch, Robert Wolford. Second Row: Althea Swaggart, Sylvia Harden, Clifford Kraft, Gary VanOcker. First Row: Jimmy Knight, J. A. Pierce, Roland Faircloth, Forrest Baker. CLASS HISTORY The Freshmen started the year with the largest class (seventeen) in school. However, Forrest Ingalls, Patty McCollum and Beulah Bissonnett left, so we have just fourteen pupils. At the first of the year we elected the following class officers: President, Garry VanOcker; vice-president, Forrest Baker; secretary- treasurer, Sylvia Harden; Sergeant at arms, Clifford Kraft. The Freshmen had their annual Freshman initiation on Tuesday the 27th of September. The Sophomores gave us a dance afterwards. We held our annual Freshman picnic on Tuesday the 4th of October, but had a very drippy time, because of continous rain. The Freshmen entertained the student body and the faculty with a dance on April 28th. FRESHMEN SNAPS OFFICER LIST STUDENT BODY President .................................. Front Row: Garry VanOcker, Marita Carlson, Kenneth Williams, Connie Harris. The Student Council served as a governing body for McEwen High. It was composed of all the elective officers of the Student Body and all the class presidents. Mr. Simpson acted as advisor. With the establishment of a new system, the Council had a huge job. Many new ideas and customs have been adapted that will stand for a good long time. The Student Council first discussed any change in their regular meeting and then brought it before the Student Body to be voted upon. This was found to be the most effective and democratic way to carry on business. LETTERMENS CLUB Left to Right—Back Row: Merle Mathwich, Lyle Hinkins, Paul Moore, Kenneth Williams, Leon Montee, Forrest Baker, Roland Faircloth, Hamlin Christenson. Front Row: Bud Schmidtgall, Earl Burns, Art Teague, Gib Morri- son, Jack Greenlee, Ralph Wolford, Garry VanOcker, Fay Haverland, Dick Wallingford. The Lettermen's Club is an organization open to all boys who earn a letter in any major sport. This year's club has a total of nineteen members; ten returning lettermen and nine new ones. Initiation for the new lettermen was held after basketball season. Officers are as follows: President, Dick-Wallingford; vice-president, Merle Mathwick; secretary-treasurer, Art Teague; sergeant-at-arms, Ralph Wolford. G. A. A. Second Row: Beulah Bissonnett, Royce Bunch, Harriet Schmidtgall, Darlene Montee, Beverly Tucker, Gib Morrison. Front Row: Carleen Buchel, Marlyn Davis, Merle Math- wich, Ralph Wolford. The band, under the direction of Mr. Fred Diehl, has had a very busy first year. It is made up of tweny-one high school members and nineteen grade school members. During basketball season they played for nearly every home game. They also performed several times during the tournament. A concert was given for the pleasure of the town's people on the ] 9th of April. On the 21st they played in the contest at La Grande. Everyone in McEwen is very proud of their band and they agree that they have made remarkable progress in just one year. STUDENT BODY PLAY Left to Right-Back Row: Paul Moore, Merle Mathwich. Second Row: Fay Haverland, Connie Harris, Lois Fuson, Art Teague. Front Row: Marlyn Davis, Jeanne Haigwood, Beverly Tucker, Harriet Schmidtgall, Carroll Cannon. The Student Body of McEwen sponsored and presented a plav, The Groom Said No!” The play for two successful performances, December 1 and 2, 1949. The play concerned a young war veteran who came home to find his future all planned for him, without regard for his personal desires. His family and girl made things pretty tough for a while, but, of course, our hero came through, told the whole crew where to get off, married his true love, a nurse, and presumably lived happily ever after. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY Left to Right-—Back Row: Jack Greenlee, Kenneth Williams, Darlene Montee, Jackie Pittman, Bill Campbell. Front Row: Marlyn Davis, Betty Swag- gart, Jeanne Haigwood, Fay Haverland, Lois Fuson. The Junior Class awoke one morning with a feverish desire to put on a play. It dawned on them that otherwise they would have to pay for their pram out of their own pockets. In the face of this discouraging prospect, the Juniors put on a lively Western, complete, with music, dancing, a murder, corny jokes, and the raunchiest cast of stubblebums, and villias that anyone has ever seen. The play was presented twice, on the 13th and 15th of April, to enthusi- astic audiences, and the Juniors at least got to pay for some of their prom. FOOTBALL Left to Right—Back Row: Mr. Potter, Moore, Williams, Mathwich, Greenlee, Pittman, Hinkins, Montee. Front Row: Teague, Schmidtgall, VanOcker, Rice, Faircloth, Baker, Morrison, Wallingford. The first football squad to represent McEwen High School compiled a very successful record and set a precedent for future teams to shoot at, in winning four, losing four, and tying one, over a tough, nine-game schedule. The season's play was a series of ups and downs—down when Weston, League Champs, beat us 50-20, and up for the climactic battle-in-the-mud, when we tied Pilot Rock on Armistice Day. Pilot Rock had not been beaten or tied by a team in this area since 1942, and our boys played their best game of the season in accomplishing this feat. In recognition of this acheivement, Mr. Simpson, principal, awarded a perpetual trophy in honor of the graduating seniors of the 1949 team, to be awarded yearly to the player contributing most to the team's success. Coach George Potter is the man largely responsible for the fine showing our boys have made, and he deserves high praise and a great deal of credit for the great team play and outstanding morale displayed by the team. He has firmly established McEwen as a team that plays hard, clean football. THE SEASON'S RECORD McEwen 20 McEwen 16 McEwen 20 McEwen 63 . McEwen 6 Umapine 12 Boardman 7 ....
