Administrators The Senior Class of 1955 marks an important milestone in the his- tory of the Millcreek Township School District as the Fiftieth Class to be graduated since the first senior class in 1905. The Class of 1905, consisting of one student, was graduated from a red brick building of only four rooms and basement which had been erected in 1901, and which is now a part of the present Millcreek Junior High School. Last year we moved into this new McDowell High School on November 16, 1954, and you are the first graduating class to spend a full year here. This year there are nearly as many Seniors being graduated as all the students combined in the first 25 graduating classes. The members of your Senior Class have labored long and hard in arranging and publishing this 29th volume of the Kaldron to preserve indelibly many moments of useful and happy memories. Keep this book throughout your life. Enjoy it as you are reminded of your high school days with all the privileges granted and opportunities available, and you will remember one of the greatest experiences of your life time - a high school education. lt is my wish that every student has enjoyed his high school years, and that each one has found the school a pleasant place in which to work and play. As you go on, l hope that you will feel that your school has challenged your pride, your spirit, your ideals and your high standard of achievement. Charles E. Leadership, Character, Scholarshipand Ser- vice are the qualities by which a member of the Society is chosen by vote of the faculty. Annu- ally five per cent of the Junior Class and ten per cent of the Senior Class are elected. With Peggy Moore and Chuck Tice, Co- Presidentsg Rosalyn lD'Amico, Secretaryg Joe Arndt, Treasurer, and Mrs. llayes, advisor, the Society sold bookcovers at mid-term im- printed with our school name and a Trojan. The annual National Honor Society Induction Service for those elected in the Senior year took place during an impressive assembly in early spring with a simple yet solemn ceremony. One of McDowell's most respected organi- zations is the Student Council. Consisting of representatives from each homeroom and from the classes at large, it is headed by John Keeler as Presidentg Dave McChesney, Sue Cross, and Mike Wander assisting with the other offices. The Thanksgiving Ball, held the end of November, was the first major project of the Student Council this year. Other projects were the annual Variety Show in February and the publishing of the McDowell Handbook with school regulations, schedules, etc. Sponsored by Mr. Barr, the Student Council again proved itself a valuable asset toMcDowell student life. 'lhey have utilized their talents to overcome the financial and production difficulties that alw iys accompany such an undertaking. Taking pictures, setting up the art work, writing and rewriting the assignments, were all done with care, l'he advertising staff did their share of soliciting ads from many business establish- t'I'ieIit.s to help pay for publication costs. In the midst of these numerous tasks were the ad- visers, Mrs. Peterson and Mr. Korrell, giving a word nf warnitig or counsel. Marty problems, some large and some small, confronted the staff, but they were soon ironed out it. ,in efficient manner. This notice, not at all unfamiliar to -e the students, can be seen in the halls the day before the .. Hub is sold. lt reminds everyone that another issue of the newspaper has been prepared for their reading pleasure. The paper gives the students a sports review, reports about their classmates, and a general coverage of all the latest school news. The members of the Hub staff work diligently at their assigned tasks. The week before the paper is published the reporters can be seen securing interviews with the teachers or students, and the ad staff is busy canvassing the area in search of ads. How much this paper means to the students is easily seen the morn- ing of the sale when the circulation staff roams the halls, catering to the ever popular demand, I want a Hub. Much of their work is in conjunction with their classroom work, but now and then they also find time for pleasure. This was seen when they sponsored a dance after the Conneaut basketball game called the Sock Hop. This group also pro- vided the students with the McDowellkeychains, which they sold early in the fall. Most of the girls are interested in becoming the secretaries of tomorrow, and they are willing to work hard toward that goal. Their activities are directed by Mrs, Hayes, their sponsor. The purpose of the club is to help prepare the girls for their jobs as secretaries. Assisted by Miss Johnson, the officers - Rita Zaunegger, Norma Lucas, Carol Seitzinger, Marilyn Mel- gaard, Peggy Moore, Janet Ben- ner, Jeanne McKibben, and Carole Rison, planned a Child- ren's Home Project. Each Y- Teen was given the name of an orphaned child and was to send him a card on each holiday throughout the year. Received enthusiastically by the girls, the project was a big success. McDowell was honored to have two members serve as Tri-Council officers. Bloom- The Girls' Athletic Club, under the able guidance of Miss Mitchell, has completed ayear filled with many activities. To release the pep and energy which accumulates during a regular school day, these girls often remain after school to participate in various sports. Some of the games in which they find joy and relax- ation are basketball, volleyball, bowling, tumb- ling, and softball. They also have an occasional splash party, and, of course, the year never goes by without a dance for the G.A,C, mem- bers and their dates. This year the girls made a special effort to add to the beauty of the homecominggame. They decorated a float in the characteristic blue and white colors for the football queen and her court. lt was a job well done. The girls are rewarded in many ways for their active participation in the functions of G. A. C. Besides developing their skill, they acquire good sportsmanship and teamwork, and the girls with the highest number of points at the end of the year receive the highly treasured .Mun Officers for the year 1954-55 were: Presi- dent - Norma Lucas, Vice President - Peggy Santlersg Secretary - Jane Reedg and Treasu- rer - Connie Lyle. well, L. Together with the majorettes and flag twirlers, they give a performance pleasing to the eyes and ears of all present. These students begin their work even before the regular school term begins, They practice during the latter part of the summer so that when school opens they are ready to give their best whenever called upon to do so. To highlight the season for some members is. their participation in the Save-An-Eye All Star Band and the Northwest District Band. They also give a spring concert in coalition with the orchestra. The leader .of the band and majorettes is Mr. Armstrong assisted by Miss Mitchell. The drum major is J. C, Delongg head majorette, Bobby Jean Whitmire, and student conductor, Paul Moore. The band plays an important part in bolstering school spirit, and they are to be commended for a fine season. Xl T . n, j n , 13, 1 lt ,I A ... ' tj 'MF Q bull '. . . 0, w If ' l fx? Their last month of summer vacation was given up for day-long practices in the hot sun. After school and many times into the evening these boys worked for perfection. Many were rewarded by gaining positions in the lineup. But the roughest job was that of the player who sat many games on the bench. These fellas all stuck it out and thus have ended their high school career as football players by earning their coveted M, With the morale building of Co-Captains Dick Cross and Mike Wander, these fellas were in there fighting every minute of every game. We shall miss Mike's rugged playing and solid blocking at Right End, as well as Dick's bringing down would- be scorers at Right Tackle. Chuck Tice at Center will leave a big gap in the starting lineup. There is Pete Agnello who held down the position of Left End. The Quarterback slot was well filled by Bill Trohoske and Ron Brocious played hard at Right Guard. The team could always rely on Alan Reed or Tom Curtiss or Sam Brady. We'll miss the good game sense of Jack Dickey who proved he had what it took. Then there was the courageous, never say die, always keep plugging, up and at 'em spirit of Ken Leibold, Vernon Brown, Ed Adams, an-fl Dave Seidl. We say, Thanks to you fellas, for making our Senior year on the Gridiron a truly memorable one. 1- J 'D 1 is if X ,f - ,ll Q, 42' cs- A 4- w N Q ': 9 sim, ,X X 1 XV S ,, r ?, - J! Their season was far from the best, but nevertheless they stuck with it and played every game with their hearts. Their enthusiasm, as well as their desire for victory, never ended and even when the crowds were small, they played their very best. There were just three of them who will not return to next year's squad. Our scoring master, Bill Trohoske, was a starter in every game - three-fourths of which he ended as high scorer. The great team spirit of Dick Cross, as well as the many points he added to the score,.made- him a hard man to lose. Ed Adams, who was a keen ball handler, was the third player of the trio who will not return to the basketball ranks next year. lt is these three fellas, along with our wonderful Coach, Bud McCoy, that we wish to thank for making our last season on the hardwood such an evciting experience. We humbly hope that we have been able to suc- ceed in maintaining this tradition. Many changes have taken place since that first class was graduated in 1905. The size of the graduating class has in- creased from one in 1905 to nearly 160 this year. The West Millcreek High School of 1905 was a small four-room brick building while the modern McDowell High School is one of the finest schools to be found in this section of the state. In order that the student body and the school, as well as the memories that go with them, may be better perceived, we pre- sent the 1955 Kaldron. Sophomores 4 ' A X r ' 4 I . Deaver .-If vi -. T7 D. We can never show enough appreciation for all that has been done to make our few years in school pleasant ones. There is much work that goes on around us of which we are not aware. Without this work, many things would not be pos- sible. For his untiring efforts and willingness to be of help to the school, we dedicate the 1955 Kaldron to Jeffery Payne. After much hustling about, we got down to business. The first activity we par- ticipated in was a Thanksgiving Play. Some of our other activities were: A Lincoln Day Program, sponsored skating parties with the eighth grade, a variety show at the P, T. A, bazaar, and also with the eighth grade, we purchased clocks for the annex. 1950-1951 With much vim and vigor we sponsored a Halloween Dance and a skating party with the seventh grade. We also presented the Operetta Christmas Bazaar' to the entire school. 1951-1952 Our Freshman Class made ,the Big Step - from the annex to the High School. We elected Joe Arndt as President, Mike Wander as Vice-President, and Car- olyn Morgan to guide us through our Freshman year. We had the distinction of being known as the largest class in the school's history. We boasted 223 students. Activities were impaired because of crowded conditions. However, we sponsored a skating party and Dungaree Drag. 1952-1953 For our Sophomore Class officers we chose as President, Jim Logie, Vice-President, Bill Trohoske, Secretary and Treasurer, Dick Cross. Our biggest project was our attempt to standardize our class rings. The tenth grade assembly committee also sponsored a Variety Show. 1953-1954 Our Junior year was a big year. After electing Mike Wander for Presi- dent, John Keeler for Vice-President, Bobbie Jean Whitmire for Secretary and Chuck Tice for Treasurer, we ordered our class rings which were standardized with a Trojan head on the setting. Our play The Little Dog Laughed' was a great success. We had the privilege of being the first class to sponsor the prom, Misty Dream, in our Recreation Center. The Juniors also were ushers and usherettes for the Com- mencement and Baccalaureate Service. 1954-1955 Our Senior year arrived despite many trials and tribulations. We elected for our officers: President, Bob Kintzg Vice-President, Ed Brodeg Secretary, Rosalyn D'Amicog and Treasurer, Joe Arndt. All our social functions were a great success. Among them were the Annual St. Pat's Dance, Minstrel Show which had as its theme an old time show boat. We are proud to be the 50th class to graduate from a Mill- creek Township High School. Also we have the privilege of being the first class to complete a full year at the new McDowell High School. 13 1 7- 15 If 1 17 x 1 ' r Q' Best dressed 9 Mary Lou Courtney - Dick Bonnie W h G S Most likely to succeed Jeanne Mcliibben - Joe Arndt Most popular , Sue Cross - Mike Wander Z- at 1, R QP . we 6 1 . n Most school spirit Eileen Hagmann - Marvin Thomas fi..
